I haven't noticed my gym being too busy in the month of January in the past. It was a ghost town last night.

    Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

    It's still December.

I only hit the gym twice a week. All other times I run outside, with a headlamp, and on a well used path on the riverfront. I also am not part of a huge gym...which I guess is another reason I never have that issue.

It must be that time of year when people start making threads whining about others who make resolutions to go to gyms and at least attempt to get a little healthier.

Davpaul... Wow, that is the meanest, most self serving reply I've ever read. I have just as much right to be on mfp whether I started3 days or 3 years ago. If u have do little time in your very important life to wade thru meaningless posts that bother u, then how did u find time to reply? Very unsupportive of u. If u don't care for a post, don't respond. Merry Xmas. Happy happy joy joy.

You have just as much right to be here as anyone else, no matter when you joined up?

    What a fascinating concept

Haha, leave the treadmills to hamsters. 5 minutes is quite enough to get a good warmup in. Then just go do bodyweight circuits. You'll burn more calories doing 15 minutes of that than like an hour of cardio. And at least alternating between stuff like jumping jacks, burpees, run in place, jump rope, squats, push-ups, TRX rows and planks is a lot less boring. Works full body, too!

But yeah, I joined the gym in june and so far have barely run into any "busy" day. I'm a little worried that I might have to modify my workouts (I do a lot of circuits, but with limited equipment and a lot of people that may get even harder to set-up than it already is) when the flock comes in. Maybe it's time I go back to a bro split for like a month. And finish my workouts with barbell complexes or something :)

Every new year, the gyms fill up with people who make resolutions. They eventually get back to normal around March. But it REALLY ticks me off -- which sounds awful. But I feel like I go so regularly all year, every year, and then suddenly I have to wait in line to get on a treadmill. And the treadmill time is limited to 20 minutes. Anyone else find they have to wait in a friggin line to get on equipment at the gym? Crazy! They even have employees who come around and turn your machine off at exactly 20 minutes!

Each year, somebody that just joined MFP and barely has any posts joins the site and clutters up on F&E forum with whiny posts complaining about how they aren't the only person in the entire world. The join gyms with cheap membership rates that can only be sustainable if more people join the gym to subsidize the price and then they cry cry cry when those people want to work out. It drives me CRAZY! I only have 20 mins each morning to find decent F&E topics to post on but I have to wade thru this garbage instead. I wish MFP had an employee to go around every 20 mins and delete thread like this from existence, especially from people that haven't even been on the site 30 days.

    Haha, that was great.

Drives me crazy as well....though, I just recently changed gym last week, so they probably think the same about me lol

I'm moving- so this is going to be my exact issue.
Oh well. I wanted to start this week purely for the "I don't want to be the new gym guy" factor- but I'm pretty sure I'm stuck with it either way.

Oh well- I typically go around 9 PM and have less issues.

I think the biggest thing I dislike about resolution's- I'm not opposed to people trying to make changes- I just wish they wouldn't use January 1 as an excuse to do it.

Stop waiting around for "January 1. Just DO IT NOW. I don't understand that. That's what bothers me the most I think. But as someone else said- least they are trying to make changes.

I see it as individuals who aspire to achieve the level of fitness I (or you) currently have or on the way to having. I started out at one point as well. Do I enjoy people who fumble around in the locker room or are unsure about using the equipment...well no. But, I refuse to let their excitement and newness be anything but a reason for me to pick up my pace, put a smile on my face and help them feel comfortable.

You're unhappy demeanor may be one of the reasons that they leave the gym. Nothing like feeling judged or unwelcomed.

I started personal training Jan 2nd of last year. I wanted to do it end of Nov/Dec, but I had to rearrange some schedules and save up my monies. I went in as a regular resolution, not a New Year's one, but I noted the irony. :)

I don't think being frustrated about a crowded gym is bad. I get frustrated sometimes when the machines I want are not available. I freak out for a few min, and then try something else.

I hope everyone enjoys their January gym time!

OP you're charming personality was exactly what I experienced at a local gym on a free pass. I immediately left went out and spent the money on what I needed at home, set up a nice gym in my garage. Which works much better for me so I should go back and say thanks!

the worst thing is that if they follow the typical 'resolutioner' pattern then all they ever experience is a crazy crowded gym

When the Y first opened near me you had to sign up on a dry erase board 24 hrs in advance to have access to the cardio equipment. not like that anymore lol

Many gyms count on the NYR rush and offer special membership deals starting Jan 1st. It's also when fitness equipment and merchandise tends to go on sale. A lot of people can't afford a gym membership without the no joining fee/ lower monthly rate/ 6 months free/ free training sessions that gyms offer during January, which is why they wait instead of starting right away.

I admire anyone who is trying to get in better shape whether they've been coming for a long time, or are just starting out. Yeah it will be a bit crowded in the near future and some of those who are joining over the next few weeks won't be in the gym after a few months, while others will stick with it, but all of them share my passion for getting in better shape and are welcome additions to the atmosphere of the gym.

And as others noted, the people that join a gym in early January and come the middle of the year are still paying their dues without coming in at all do help keep down the prices for those of us who in there on a daily basis.

FWIW I started hitting the gym in early December 2012 (beat the Jan 1 rush) and am still there almost every day.

I have been a member of a gym now for 15 years. I see the swarms every January with the exception of last year. Not sure why, but last year the crowds never came. However, I work out at lunch. So maybe the newbies all went before or after work.

I re-joined my gym last January after quitting it a year earlier because all I was doing at the time was walking on the treadmill. They had great sign-up deals in January to lure in all the resolutioners, so I took advantage of that. This time around I wanted to sign up with a trainer & got 2 free hours with one for committing in January (plus they waived the initiation fee). I'm still seeing him 3x a week & feel like my gym is my home away from home. Some of us who join in January stick around.

agreed- this year I'll be a 'resolutioner' and I am NOT happy about it. But it's the luck of the draw- I already scooped my gym out so but still- it's the reality of it.

Like I said I'm definitely all about people changing their lives- but it's inevitable to have new people come in a big wave- usually January- and then in like March/April when people start panicking about summer and swim suits. It's kind of amusing- but oh well.

while I agree with the gym counting on the NY rush- I don't agree about the "well that's when I can afford it when they run the special" I'd say that's actually pretty much rubbish- having spent over a year working at a gym- I can comfortably tell you most gym's offer specials year round- at different times- January is not the ONLY month they run a special.

I started my current gym in October last year... I was unaware that the gym were running a promotion online "1 month = 50% fees" or somthing like that....

I WAS treated like a resolutioner/temp member when I first started... and it stung. It took some members weeks to WANT to talk to me, even though I smiled and tried to talk to them.

I've seen "deals" come and go in this past year... busy times and slack times... and I'm sad to say it still seems to be the same members on the same evenings, with very few exceptions. :( Part of me is looking forward to these new people. Those that REALLY want to change, like I so desperately do, but the other part is the selfish me that wants the weight room/other equipment free so I dont need to ask someone if they are just sitting on the bench, or are really working out... (I'm generally still to shy to ask too many questions in the weight room :( )
