i started just for the looks, STRICTLY for the looks, but now, i want to be fit too0

Both, but vanity takes up a bigger share of my motivation. It used to be my only motivation, but my hobbies require so much strength/flexibility that fitness now takes up a bigger share of that motivation. Age also plays a part. As I get older I realize how important it is to stay fit for health reasons. But it wasn't until I turned 35 a few years ago that I even thought about future me and health. I've been blessed with good health and would like to keep it that way.0

Little bit of both, plus I didn't want to spend money on clothes the next size up because I really didn't have the money. It is one of those little things that really triggered it for me.0

I started because I was tired of feeling like I had lost control over my body and my weight. Feeling my quality of life being swallowed up by my mass and not understanding what I was doing so wrong frustrated me to a point of doing something. As the weight came off, the improvement in my appearance was a great reward and motivator. Being thought of as younger was the biggest surprise. In the end, the loss of weight and increased activity level has brought me a level of fitness which was never my focus in the beginning but by far the most rewarding now. Being able to move through the world with strength and endurance is an amazing ability and one that keeps me going. My life is bigger than I imagined it could be and more fulfilling and it is something I now protect and nourish.0

Both but I'd have to say that looks comes before fitness.0

both - more for fitness. used to be an aerobics instr. in my 30's so I knew what it took to get there. after the loss of my husband, things change, depression and just plain not giving a ****. after I decided to get back into the swing of life, started back up. I am probably more fit now than when I was in my 30's. I bike ride long distances, done a 1/2 marathon in hilly seattle, countless other runs, and people can't believe I am as old as I am and I run in vibrams which I love!0

I would have to say fitness. I have always been judged on looks and that has made me so self conscious that I have no confidence in myself as a person. Fitness wise, my main reason: I have asthma and I know it will turn into COPD (doctors have already told me this thanks to genetics, but the longer I can push it from occurring the better) and I want to show my kiddo that you can live a long and healthy life by being fit.
Right now, I consider myself far from it, though I have made progress, but still have a long way to go. My profile picture is my stomach and what it looks like right now. No one would ever guess by that that I am a dance minor and really good at dance (jazz, ballet and modern) all because I have a big gut. Thus why fitness again for me.0 -
Definitely both.0

Both I want to be as fit as I can and look good.0

Looks. Honestly I was already fit when I started; but I still want to lose another 10 lbs or so to be sexy...
I'm 5'4" and my frame is very small; putting on 2 lbs means I lose my collar bones... I'd love to have the "small but strong" look. For that I have to work extra hard0 -
Fitness, I study martial arts so I need to be fit.
I never had any weight issues in my life, so I've always looked how I want to. The looks part doesn't concern me. But it's a good bonus, especially when I get older.0 -
Well, the good thing about fitness is that there are always many reasons to motivate you. If you start losing interest (temporarily) with the fitness aspect, then looks can keep you motivated. If you feel like focusing on looks is negative for you, then focus on fitness. You just keep going and each day you are motivated by what motivates you that day. And some days it's just fun and neither of those reasons motivate you. We are multifaceted.0

I'd have to say both! I was tired all the time, and my sugar levels/health was a mess. Turning 40 was a milestone where I decided I wanted to be around to enjoy another 40 years of my life with all of my limbs and mobility! I'm here to get into shape, and remove myself from what "norm" considers obese status. I can say that I love picking out my clothes from a normal rack vs. having to go to the plus sizes! I'm getting there, my real challenge is going to be staying here!0

I would think they go hand in hand.0

I understand your question. In my case, I feel that looking good and being fit for my sports are separate goals. I'm 6'2" and I currently weigh about 175lbs. I play volleyball, and I think this weight is pretty good for moving and jumping with my smaller bone structure.
To look good, I feel like I could gain another 10-20 lbs of muscle and "look" better, but I'll definitely feel slower with the extra mass on me. I've weighed as much as 210 lbs at one point (working out heavy, eating a lot, etc) and I don't think my body responds well to the extra mass.
I've decided that it's more important for me to play better and harder than it is for me to look good. I'm going to try going up to 180-185lbs and see if I can still maintain or increase my vertical leap. I'd really like to be able to dunk again.0
