I'm gluten free, because I kinda need to be. Why are you giving up all three? An allergy? Or as a way to create a deficit?

I understand doing this if you have allergy or health issues but I don't and life would just not be worth living to me!

    Why are you trying it?
  • Like everyone else has asked:

    Why?

I can see giving up read meat (or at least cutting down) because as delicious as it is it's not that good for you.

Gluten free -- that's a bit more difficult because if you're going to truly go gluten free and not just be one of those people who is "giving up bread" then you need to be conscious of the foods you choose because gluten is hidden every where. Also gluten free products are very expensive, high in calories and sugars.

Dairy free: heck no! I loves me my milk and cheese!

If you're doing it to drop pounds then don't bother.

Just eat at a deficit and exercise.

    Sounds like hell on Earth.

I might/might not inflict it on my worst enemy - depends how badly they crossed me!

    agreed- sounds awful.

I have tried various renditions of 4-6 wee challenges- giving up foods.

But it's not just for the health side of things- it's a science experiment- and also a exercise in self discipline. I have clear defined rules and goals and a TIME LINE.

    NOT a "I want to go X, Y and Z free"

I also don't try doing all the things at once- that's bad- it's setting you up to fail- and you are missing out on some crucial data you could be gaining.

I don't have any issue with people giving things a go to see how their body reacts- but I dislike the idea of jumping on a fad restrictive diet for no reason other than "to just try it". It's just a good way to succeed. Actually it's pretty much the best way to fail.

she has allergies- that makes sense then if those foods trigger reactions.

Otherwise- focus on a calorie deficit- cutting out foods won't necessarily facilitate weight loss- only a calorie deficit can do that.

As a celiac vegetarian, I can tell you that it is hard enough. I predominantly eat vegetables and rice.
Nuts are fantastic, I highly recommend peanut butter made with just peanuts. Tofu and beans are also good for protein. If you're doing a lot of exercise I wouldn't recommend this diet as it will be hard for you to stay healthy, otherwise you'll find yourself eating very healthily.
Personally I have found that by avoiding meat and gluten, my skin has improved and I just feel better. This diet will be hard but, if you stick with it, you may find you feel much better for it.
    Good luck ^_^

But do you? Also, she has allergies to red meat? That is very rare.

You do not need to give up any of those to lose weight. You are also going to have a hard time (not impossible, but hard) getting enough protein in as the three things you listed are pretty much the most protein dense foods/drinks you can find.

I am a vegetarian. I have not eaten meat in over 16ish years. I was 90% of the time ovo/lacto veg meaning i would eat eggs and dairy. That other 10% of the time would be when I would select a fish dish if it were significantly healthier than the veggie option. In the last 12-18 months I have even stepped away from the fish as it just does not appeal to me. About 6-7 months ago now a doctor suggested gluten free dairy free for me after some nutrition testing. I have been mostly GF/DF since then. I am fortunate that I only have to avoid obvious gluten and dairy...meaning that I don't have to scour the label of things like bbq sauce that I use sparingly and seldomly.

The process has helped my health but I did not do it to lose weight or because it seemed like a good idea. I went through this process at the advice of a dr. I am thrilled with the results. I have had to find a few new staples in my diet but a few trips to whole foods and ironically Meijer have helped. WE (my 12 year old eats like me for medical reasons as well) have discovered Amy's Gluten Free Dairy Free bean burritos, and enjoy life brand of snacks. Target has a lovely GF angel hair pasta...simply balanced, and then just real food...the less processed the easier.

i cant speak on the other ones, but going GF when you dont need to is a pain. Besides the fact that gluten is in more things than you'd thing, most of the substitutes used in GF items are significantly less nourishing vitamin and mineral wise than gluten.

She is not allergic to red meat

Then why are you looking to give it up?

I think people are confused here.

You are not allergic to any of these (at least not based on your responses) and she is not allergic to red meat.

    You want to lose weight.

Giving up these items do not make sense based on the above tbh.

ETA: giving up gluten and/or dairy if your daughter is allergic to make it easier for her makes sense to me. You doing it for weight loss or you giving up red meat does not.

I went through a gluten-free phase. And then I read the ingredient lists on gluten-free foods. No thanks. Unless you are gluten-intolerant, I actually think going gluten-free is a bad idea.

And LOL at red meat being bad for you. Red meat generally has more fat than poultry or fish or some cuts of pork. That doesn't make it bad for you. Fat, even saturated fat, is not the problem.

I went GF for a while to test for a sensitivity and it was awful trying to ensure everything was really GF. Seriously, gluten is in so many things and when the gluten is replaced in some products, it's usually done with rice, which causes it's own set of issues from a weight loss perspective. You can buy loads of GF products these days, which makes it easier (yet generally more expensive), but good luck in restaurants! Needless to say, I was happy to find after my month long experiment and final testing that I didn't have a GF sensitivity and don't have to worry about scouring for that ingredient.

Of course, you will run into the same problem with dairy free, too. It's not just giving up milk and cheese, it's all the ingredients found in basic foods as well that use whey powder or eggs.

Eliminating food from your diet due to a need vs. thinking it will help speed up your weight loss will likely leave you frustrated.

I don't want to live in a world where cheese, ice cream, bacon, and steak exists but are not in my mouth.

    Good luck with that though.
