Being from the south, it is an old superstition to always have collard greens and black eyed peas for lunch on New Years day.
One is supposed to bring money, the other luck. I forget which is which so I just cover all my bases.
Throw in some form of pork and corn bread and you have every New Years day lunch I have had in the last 43 years.
Any traditions for you today?

We also do greens and Hoppin John. I think this year we'll all have a bit more greens and maybe the mr will land a job soon!0
-
cold smoked salmon omelets. I don't know exactly where that started but been having that for New Years day and Christmas morning breakfast for as long as I can remember. Other than that, New Years day itself has always kind of been like a Sunday.0

Stuffed cabbage rolls, collards, and black eyed peas, though most of the time it's just sleeping on the couch to recover. This year it's Vicodin . . . lol0
-
black eyed peas in the crock pot right now. Will make cornbread later to go with.0
-
We always have a traditional Sunday roast with roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding.0

The belief around here is how ever you spend the first day of the year, that is how your entire year will go...We try to spend the day with family, having fun--definitely roping if the weather permits! As far as traditional food goes, it's usually red chili, beans and tamales:)0

It usually starts off with strong black coffee then wing it from there.0

Evening snack:

i do plan on having it over the weekend though
another tradition i like is Swedish. they eat lots of seafood on new year's day especially lobster0 -

All the people saying how you spend your New Year's day sets the tone for your entire year is depressing me... I am currently at work (granted, I'm not actually WORKING....), so it's gonna be a gloomy year!
As far as food - gotta get as much luck in as possible! Pork (in this case, ham), collard greens, black eyed peas. Also sweet potatoes, which I do not think are a good luck food, but they should be, given how amazing they are.
Also, coffee, water, and ibuprofen, but that has more to do with last night than today's activities.
Edited for a typo0 -
On New Year's day, it is traditional to eat leftovers, same as Christmas...
Traditional food for New Year's Eve (and Christmas Eve) would be sour cabbage rolls (didn't have any this year), sour cabbage with sour cream, fried sausage and beef salad (usually made with chicken).0 -

Black-eyed peas, sauerkraut (= cabbage). I don't eat meat, so don't do the pork.
As far as other traditions go, I follow my grandmother, who unfortunately did not throw wheat around the room, but put new shoes and new money outside the door just before midnight. Supposed to bring you the same in the New Year.0 -
It's all about the sauerkraut today.0
-
Sauerkraut, pork, hot dogs, and kielbasa here, with mashed potatoes. I originate from northwestern PA and that's our traditional New Year's dinner!0
