Being from the south, it is an old superstition to always have collard greens and black eyed peas for lunch on New Years day.
One is supposed to bring money, the other luck. I forget which is which so I just cover all my bases.
Throw in some form of pork and corn bread and you have every New Years day lunch I have had in the last 43 years.
Any traditions for you today?

We also do greens and Hoppin John. I think this year we'll all have a bit more greens and maybe the mr will land a job soon!0

cold smoked salmon omelets. I don't know exactly where that started but been having that for New Years day and Christmas morning breakfast for as long as I can remember. Other than that, New Years day itself has always kind of been like a Sunday.0

Stuffed cabbage rolls, collards, and black eyed peas, though most of the time it's just sleeping on the couch to recover. This year it's Vicodin . . . lol0

The belief around here is how ever you spend the first day of the year, that is how your entire year will go...We try to spend the day with family, having fun--definitely roping if the weather permits! As far as traditional food goes, it's usually red chili, beans and tamales:)0

It usually starts off with strong black coffee then wing it from there.0
