Have you deleted your Facebook? Why? Why not?

Options
I am curious. I permanently deleted my Facebook account in 2011 after having it for about 3.5 years. It was because the site had become incredibly annoying and privacy settings were becoming less and less private. I created another account in 2012 just to keep up with a few friends, but deleted that as well after about a month. Why? Because Facebook is very, very not cool. It was actually the fact that I had set all of my privacy settings to the strictest available but got a message from my ex and Facebook 'suggested' we be friends. I recently created another Facebook account with a completely fake name and fake e-mail because I wanted to be able to comment news stories on sites that are linked to Facebook only, e.g. Huffington Post. I had the account for 2 days and in that time it asked me to be friends with or if I knew someone I work with and a guy I dated for like a month last year. That is SCARY!

So, I believe that Facebook is evil. Take Facebook and add Google and we have the 'fictional' genocidal computer network from Terminator...SKYNET! O_O

Do you still have Facebook or have you unloaded that horror from your life? Why? Why not?

I just changed my last name on facebook to a fake last name, deleted any information about where I lived or worked, and set a fake place as my location.

Yes I did because my boyfriend's racist *kitten* family was making trouble and it just wasn't worth it to me. I never looked back.

I de-activated mine 12/30/13. I found I was spending WAY too much sitting at the computer and frequently had a glass of wine or some other high calorie adult beverage sitting next to me while socializing.

I'm committed to getting healthier in 2014 but it will require me getting up away from the computer!! :blushing:

I've been on Facebook since it was for college/university students only, in 2004. I can never delete unless another social network takes over and everyone switches over to that, because it's the major way I keep in touch with my friends all of the world. I used to live in Europe and have a lot of international friends. It's a great way to keep in touch with all of them and remain active in their lives.

Yes because I would spend all my time on it. Plus I broke up with my boyfriend and I didn't want to see the gossip

I;ve seen people "poof" on every social media outlet there is. Myspace was like a revolving door of the same people coming and going. In my experience, most the time it was they started getting to involved in things they shouldn't and needed to hide the evidence, or buck the stalker.

All of my family are on Facebook so I surely won't be getting rid of mine. I keep up with the privacy settings as much as I can though. I have mine locked down pretty good.

I deleted my Facebook account because I felt like I had no privacy! I had the privacy setting ramped right up, but It used to grate me that everyone knew what I was doing, or if I ever posted a comment, I felt like everyone would dissect it, trying to find flaws and things to pick at. It got to the stage where I never used Facebook because I hated everybody knowing exactly what I was doing, where I was, and having absolutely no freedom of speech because whatever I posted, SOMEBODY always would find a problem with it. So I deleted my account about 2 years ago now and never even been tempted to go back

Also I don't like being part of the Facebook "herd", I like being a minority  I guess its my inner teenage rebel still burning strong inside me

I have deleted it for a max of 4 weeks.
I like to keep in touch with my family who are abroad and see what friends are up to that I don't always get to see, it also keeps me in the loop about work goings-ons as I've been on maternity leave for 17 months. It has its pros & cons. I find if people are causing probs - the delete & block button is perfect!

I've tried. I've had so many that it isn't funny anymore. I feel uncomfortable with it sometimes. But I keep going back. It's a way for me to connect with family. My family lives in Michigan, and I don't own a phone. So, it helps. It also helps me keep in contact with old friends. I'm just reallycareful about what I post.

I've had FB since around 2004 as well when it was still only allowed for people in college and verification of an .edu email account was required. I have too many real friends and contacts from every aspect of my life to really consider permanently deleting it because I only am able to keep up with them via facebook. A lot of these people post things and pictures that I wouldn't see otherwise because we are all sprawled across the country and world. I do get annoyed with quite a lot and go through period where I will temporarily deactivate my account but usually reinstate it within a month or so each time I do that.

I'm really close to deactivating mine as well, mostly because of the headaches and arguments it has caused in my family and friends. I tend to have some rather unpopular opinions that have gotten me deleted from other people's pages, and some of my family have political opinions that I don't agree with as well and I get tired of reading about it.

It's too much drama. Like someone said, it's like high school all over again. I left that behind me long ago.

I still have an active facebook account because I communicate that way with a huge percentage of my friends and a few family members. I think it's very convenient. I don't like to text all of my friends frequently so it's a good way to stay in touch or plan nights out and so forth. I am not a super active user though, I post maybe 1-2 statuses per week and comment on others' posts every couple of days.

I think I started using the site in 2006 or 2007, then deleted it for several years. I had a somewhat "secret" facebook for a long time, with a fake jokey name and just 5-6 of my closest friends on it. Then in 2011 there was a massive tornado that destroyed my town and I had a lot of friends and family trying to find me, so I made myself public on facebook as a means for people to get in touch with me and vice versa. It's been in my "real" name since that time.
