What do YOU do when...

You just don't feel like it?

You just don't feel like getting up early to go to the gym?

You just don't feel like measuring your portions?

You just don't feel like going for that run?

Or whatever it is... what do you do when you just don't feel like doing it?

I squeeze my fat. I look at my gut in the mirror. I sit down and talk to myself, aloud. I remember all the times my weight made me feel uncomfortable or less than. I text a friend and tell him or her to yell at me. I remember why I wanted to do this in the first place. Then I get off my lazy butt and do it.

What do you do when you just don't wanna?

Sometimes I just don't! Like this week...

I kinda just force myself. Pure will. I get up at 4:30 so there's no one I'd text at that time. I just keep telling myself that 100% of the time, I feel good about forcing myself to work out. I have never regretted it.

It's cool that you can get yourself to do it, but your stuff is coming from a really negative place. Try to put some happy stuff in there too!

I couple of months ago I recorded a short video on my phone just after my Muay Thai class. I just said how I always feel like a million bucks post workout and how glad I was that I had gone. When I just don't feel like going, but know I should, I watch it and it helps.

Like Nike..I just do it. I force myself to go. When it comes to workouts I've actually had some of my best runs or workouts when I forced myself into doing it instead of finding an excuse not to.

Honestly, I NEVER feel like exercising so I force myself to do it. I'm waiting for it to become habit and enjoy it like others have preached on here. Its going on 4 months still nothing inside of me enjoys this. Still a chore. Still force myself that is why I usually do it late afternoon/early evening. lol

I never was really obese(just considered overweight by BMI standards, sometimes and other times considered skinny) and never made fun of. Still got plenty attention because I carried it well on my 5'10 frame. lol... So no1 would remind me of why I'm doing this. Matter of fact no1 really cares! lol

So, for me I'm my only motivation and inspiration and my pals on here seeing them go hard motivates me because I have a pride issue and do not want to say I'm going to do something and not follow through.

So, basically still waiting to somewhat enjoy this and see this as a habit.

At this point it's just habit and muscle memory, "don't feel like it" just doesn't compute. By the time I realize that I just don't feel like it today, I've already done it, so "don't feel like it" is already irrelevant.

I feel like this on cold days when I have a run schedules. I tell myself I'll at least work out for 10 minutes, and if it's really awful, I can always come back - which I never do, because I'm always into my run by then. My thoughts as I leave the house are always something like 'why am I doing this to myself?!' but inevitably, when I come back it's always 'why don't I do that more often?'.

You just don't feel like it? I don't get this feeling anymore. I've purposely found activities I love to do, that don't even feel like I'm purposely exercising, and are fun.

You just don't feel like getting up early to go to the gym? My daughter's preschool is at the gym. If she has school, I'm going whether I like it or not.

You just don't feel like measuring your portions? It's habit now, I don't get this feeling. But if I did, it would be a matter of, 'do you want this or not? Oh, you do? Then weigh the damn food.'

You just don't feel like going for that run? Again, I've chosen stuff I like. I don't get this feeling.

Or whatever it is... what do you do when you just don't feel like doing it? On the off chance I don't do something, I just make sure I hit my base calorie goal without the exercise (like I would on a rest day).

What do you do when you just don't wanna? Just do it.

I don't give myself a choice. It sounds silly, and I have no idea why it works, but I always get up and do it, so there ya go!

During the day, when I'm most tempted to decide to give in and have a cookie, or whatever, I take off my big, comfy, baggy sweatshirt, pull on some jeans, and look in the mirror. *shudder* That's usually enough to remind me. lol

When I don't want to measure portions, I remember the twinkie diet guy. He lost like 50 pounds eating nothing but twinkies and cupcakes and such. He was making the point that the only thing that matters is calories. I don't eat twinkies, but I do have some of the frozen diet meals and packaged foods that have the calories printed right on them. They're actually filling and pretty cheap, although they generally have a lot of sodium.

But what you're really asking is how do you get your motivation back if it slumps. What works for me is I take a minute and remind myself why I started this whole lifestyle change process in the first place. For me, that means looking at my daughter and remember when my doctor told me I wouldn't see her graduate if I didn't stop trying to kill myself with nicotine, caffeine, and food.

I look at before/after photos of myself and others! I also look at my daughter and think about why I started... to show her a healthy lifestyle. Gets my butt off of the couch : )

I fall off the wagon...hard. Hence the reason it has taken me 3 years to get where I'm at, and it's barely out of the gate. I'm on the upswing right now, determined to go to the gym 4 days a week, eating properly, etc. But it's inevidable, I'll crash and stop going. I don't have any advice to give, but find something new or something you like. I found aquafit, and I was diligent, then it got boring. I found walking my dog, that got boring too. Now I'm doing yoga 2 days a week and lifting weights in the gym. Not boring yet, and yoga is more challenging then I thought. So who knows, it might finally stick

I look at the activities and successes of my MFP pals... they always motivate me! I change things up and do new "exercise" that is novel and different, like belly dancing, rebounding, or bushwalking.

I make new goals; to walk or run farther or faster, to involve myself in a sporting event, to get into that pair of jeans that have been taunting me from the back of the closet.

I look at old photos of my "fatter" self, and remember why I am monitoring my food. I try new "skinny" recipes.

I do anything to keep moving, keep eating well, and keep focus. The success achieving my goals helps me continue to move forward.

99% of the time I cannot wait to get to the gym and workout. The once in a while that I'm not feeling it, I tell myself I can just do my main lift and then leave. Usually wind up finishing the whole training session anyways.

I take one day off from tracking and measuring my food every week. I just like the mental break from feeling forced to eat so much food.

i grumble as i slowly walk to my dresser drawer where my workout clothes are, i complain as i put them on, i sigh, i ***** but no matter what i make my self get off my lazy butt and do it. i know once i head out the house for my daily walk, i will feel great in only five minutes or so into it. I have made the measuring and weighing part a normal routine of mine so its really a habit now even if i am pouring something that isn't for me. my hubbie makes fun of me to be funny but i use my cups and scale religiously no matter what. I will say that i would rather skip the gym sometimes and end up doing a longer swim after my walk. I am not as motivated to be stuck inside all claustrophobic as I am out in nature. Nature gets me so motivated and i love my walks and swimming. I like the nike quote Just do it. I say this a lot to myself.

I found something I love to do - lifting.

If I'm feeling like I really don't want to do then its likely that I'm worn out, getting sick or just fatigued - so I eat a maintenance for a week, take a rest week and then get back into it!

Making it a habit works for me. I set my alarm the night before I go to bed to "try" by Pink, lay out my clothes including my water bottle and I make it part of my morning routine. Now when I skip I feel out of sorts and I remind myself of how much better I feel when I start my day right.

Also if you find something you enjoy you'll be more apt to stick to it. I love my morning gym classes and got friendly with some instructors. It's nice to see the same faces in the gym every morning.

Once you make it a habit and part of your life you won't think about "not" doing it you'll just do it because you'll see the results and want to keep going!!

Good advice. I take a scheduled rest week every 5 weeks.

When I really don't feel like it, I just do it. I "step outside" myself and just get in the gym, or get my running gear on. Like I am pulling the strings on a puppet. Once I get started I am fine.

You should realise that there WILL be times you miss a session, be it through injury, illness, or other things in your life. As long as you don't let it derail your goals.

You go to the gym. You measure your potions. You go for the run.
I call it Nike Advice: Just do it.

I "don't feel like" going to lift a lot, but I enjoy the results of it and once I'm in the weight room loading up a bar the not wanting it goes away. The exercise is the wage I have to pay to get to where I want to go - it's like hating to fly but wanting to go to Europe. It's fly or don't go.

    Which destination do you choose?

Last night I felt like not going to the gym.

However I picked myself off my bed and went anyway, ended up burning more calories in a single session than I did previously doing the same exercise.

Just showing up is 90%, your body will do the rest.

I felt like this over the weekend, was trying my hardest to talk myself out of exercising. So I decided I wasn't going to exercise that day, I was going to go out for a fun run in the rain while listening to my zombie run, get dirty and just enjoy it. Not worrying about how many calories I burned, or what pace I was keeping, just fun splashing in the puddles.

Was this exercise .. of course, but when I allowed myself to just enjoy the activity and forget the details it got me over my excuses.

Other days it's just part of my normal routine, but some days I need to get back to the basics to remember why I like biking, running and lifting... it's fun

    I love what I do....swim and walk.
I will log it here in the am when I plan my food. Then I am accountable.
I plan a rest day or a day when I don't workout as hard, but if I am in a busy season, like now, I know one or two days on the weekend I will be driving or traveling. Those are my rest days.

I agree, the days I don't want to are my best workouts.

I had a "I don't want to exercise" day yesterday...I hadn't slept well the night before, it was monday and I was feeling blahhhhhhhhhh.

So I got home said good bye to the hubby, said hello to the son and went in and did it anyway...because I know I need to and it made me feel better..how do I know it made me feel better...

after my workout I made seafood alfredo, strawberry shortcake, hung out a load of laundry, weeded my flowers and garden a bit, went for a 2 mile walk, cleaned up the house and then I sat down and ate pie.

ETA: oh and I love lifting and I had a great session...no failures and upped most of my weight...

I visualize how I feel stepping on the scale and seeing the weight come off. I know weight isn't the only metric by which we should gauge success, but the visualization really works for me because I've fought so hard and I don't want to keep losing and gaining the same 10/20/etc. pounds week after week.

I have an easy emotional trigger. I hate it but it works everytime. I look at myself in the mirror and ask myself. "Do you think she would be proud of you yet?" It is one of those questions that I know will never be answered. Is it positive motivation? No. Will it motivate me? Yes. I lost something precious and that reminded loss instantly solidifies my resolve. To hear "You did great, papa." would be my everything.
