The idea that God drinks anything besides Mountain Dew is laughable.

  • Hello! I'm struggling to lose that last 10 pounds (at 140..and want to be at 130 and i'm 5'4")

The only constant factor in my life that i can think of that may be hindering that weightloss is DIET soda.
I've cut out unhealthy snacks, fatty meats, and fast food. I strength train and do kickboxing for cardio.
I've read that your body doesn't process diet soda as well as it would normal soda..I was wondering if this is true. (obviously i know that neither diet or regular soda is good for you at all)

Have any of you achieved your weightloss/fitness goal by drinking diet or regular soda? (one a day or one every other day)
I'm trying to completely cut it out of my life but, right this moment, it's not possible for me to go cold turkey.

Any help/advice/success stories would be awesome! :]

I was a big fan of diet soda because it helped me kick a serious regular soda habit and it helped me lose weight. I think lots of people can tell the same story. Unfortunately there is a fair amount of evidence that diet soda is not only bad for you but doesn't support long term weight loss. Here's a link to a study (for fitness nerds only) http://download.cell.com/images/edimages/Trends/EndoMetabolism/tem_888.pdf and another to an article that talks about the study (for regular non-nerdy fitness types): http://tinyurl.com/n4v2wb9

The most researched food additive in the history of ever.

Conclusion? If you drank 90 cans of soda a day, it would be bad for you. Consider that a challenge.

    I agree completely!
Hey! I've lost all my weight still drinking diet soda. I've never hit a plateau for more than a week or two (water retention, yadda yadda). I still eat fast food, ice cream, pizza and stuff. Honestly, what is your current intake? Do you weigh and measure your food? Are logging every little thing? Generally, if you hit a stall it's a need to recalculate your goals. How long has the stall been? Losing weight goes slower the closer you get to goal as you have less fat to lose. You want to lose at about .5 to 1 lb loss a week to minimize LBM loss.

It's in my fridge.. I go through ebbs and flows with it. I mostly like using it as a "snack" if I can't get to a reliable meal in otherwise. I don't like drinking 0 calorie soda WITH meals.. I prefer just water or low calorie drink..

There isn't a specific reason, but sometimes tricking the stomach isn't a good thing for me. The Biggest Loser for example really likes to push gum (because they're sponsored by it) because it's low calorie and it'll help satiate hunger. It does the opposite for me. The stomach thinks you're eating food so it starts preparing to digest food that never arrives.. so this ends up making me hungrier.

Take home message......correlation is not causation. Now if these were randomized double blind clinical trials, we'd have something to sink our teeth into, but they're not.
  • I've been on my weight loss plan for the last three weeks, and have lost 3.9kg (8.5lbs) so far, and I've continued to drink at least two 350ml cans of Coke Zero every day, some days three. It's my one vice (don't drink coffee, smoke or drink alcohol outside of the occasional social outing) and I wouldn't ditch it unless I absolutely had to.

It doesn't seem to have hindered my weight loss, which makes complete sense as it's basically calorie free.
