What motivates you to send a PM to a stranger on MFP?

Usually it's because I have something I wish to say to them.

Something they said made me laugh, or I wanted to ask something and didn't want to derail their thread, or I had a flash of brilliance and felt the need to reach out and share.

Since I don't have their phone number or e-mail address, it is very difficult to reach out to them in a more traditional manner of communication. Obviously letters are a bit outmoded to say nothing of telegraph and homing pigeon. Usually people are too geographically dispersed on this website for my favorite media, two campbells soup cans and a string.

So I rely on sending a PM.

I have sent them when I think they have said something incredibly brilliant or funny in the forums, or if I feel that they need some encouragement. I have also sent them if I see their picture and read their story and feel they have worked hard to get where they are, I sent them a note expressing my respect.

Or if they have a profile pic of a beautiful German Shepard, thats my heart.
