Can't always eat at work

I recently took a serving position, and on the few days that I work, it gets too busy for me to eat. I start out my days getting around 1200 calories of mostly clean foods (adding whole grain pastas, olive oil and sometimes ranch dressing ), but when I work the night shift from 4-11pm, I'm usually unable to eat until 9-10pm. So I'll end my days hungry, rather than eating right before bed.

Any suggestions? I'm also doing the Strong Lifts program 3x/week with cardio and abs in between.

I've never tried protein shakes, but thought that May be the easiest during work. I'm only worried about getting bulkier due to the extra protein. But then I think that's just crazy talk!

The Federal rule, which applies in all States, requires two fifteen minute breaks, one in the first four hours of work and one in the second 4, 5 hours of work, plus a 30 minute lunch break in the mid part of the day.

pretty sure you should be entitled to breaks x

With the serving job you will be moving a ton.... you need to find a way to eat something, and a protein shake is definitely a good option. It will not make you bulky at all. Do not deprive yourself, or you will end up getting home and bingeing....

With no disrespect, these rules unfortunately rarely apply in the restaurant industry. I work on the other side of the line as a cook and 12-13 hour shifts with no break are uncommon. If a new employee demanding breaks, they would most likely be laughed at -- whether it's right, legal, or not, the whole momentum and pace of the restaurant industry is different than most other jobs.

Eat before bed it you are hungry. This can actually help you to sleep better. Try a protein shake if need be. Great way to keep you full during those periods. I served for 2 years and remember those late night shifts and crushing some pasta around 1030 as we were cleaning.

Long story short.....if you are hungry eat.

Do you not have something to eat just before you start work? Also what about a break during your work time.
Protein shakes are fine. I drink them and not turned bulky.

    Yup, crazy talk!

Good idea on the shakes. You are thinking in the right direction. You need easy, portable snacks that you can fuel your body with to ensure you are eating adequate amount of calories to achieve your goal(s)

I make protein muffins that are great hot or cold and are portable. Chicken breast pieces are also great. I just had those while sitting in the airport. All kinds of options, just think outside the box.... Or google it!

    Good luck

For the OP -- is it possible for you to bring something to snack on during your shift? A small bag of nuts (be careful if a customer has an allergy), cut up apple, etc. Nothing that requires leaving the floor for more than a minute but will provide you with some energy. I also second the previous posters -- it's a much better idea to eat before bed than to go to bed hungry. Being a server is a highly active job and you definitely need to keep your nutrition up throughout.

    That's a nice luxury.

For the OP, a protein shake, will give you some on the go nutrition, keep your protein up, and is not going to make you bulky.

Given what I actually posted, your conclusion doesn't even make sense.

It's a luxury to have an extra 30 minutes of sleep you can foresake to eat a late night meal.

Can you make a smoothie with some protein in it and just drink on it during this time? Thats what I would do. Just make it before your shift.

Okay okay, no fighting. If you want to be childish and deliver passive jabs over the internet, don't use my thread.

Anyway, your suggestions are VERY helpful! As far as the breaks go, yeah that won't happen lol. I could probably manage to sip on a shake while preparing salads. And yes, I do eat RIGHT before work. I try to get a protein with whole grain pasta and olive oil for energy, but with the weight lifting, my body eats that up QUICKLY! I get so hungry very fast.

And eating before bed has never been something good to do in my eyes. And chances are I won't be preparing a healthy snack when I'm dog tired lol. If anything, I would eat a banana, but my stomach doesn't like sweet stuff.

So what protein shakes are recommended? I have issues with trying things, so it must be super tasty!! :)

Being a nurse on 2nd shift, I know how crazy it can get with no chance for a break sometimes.
I do bring a meal to work that requires a quick 45 seconds to heat up in the microwave along with fresh veggies, but I always carry a supply of healthy options that I can quick snack on without having to prepare or heat up in a microwave/

    Some ideas:
    PB&J sandwich
    Protein bars
    Fruit
    String Cheese
    And lots of water

Since you work in a restaurant I assume you take smoke breaks. Go ahead and quit smoking and eat something on what would have been your cigarette breaks. BONUS: you'll be saving money by not buying cigs.

You're quite a fan of jumping to conclusions.

I was not offended. I just aim to offer advice that solves a problem without creating another.

I'm taking her at her word that she works the job she indicated, and lifts heavy as she indicates, so cutting back sleep is going to work against her health and fitness. It is, of course, possible that she doesn't lift heavy or is independently wealthy and just works for her own amusement, and therefore doesn't really need the sleep.

That is one of the most absurd assumptions I've ever heard. I think I tried cigarettes a few times when I was 16 and haven't touched them since. No smoke breaks. No breaks at all.

BONUS: I'm not a chimney. My lungs are happy. I have saved lots of money.

Ps, try to not assume things about people. You just make yourself look bad.

My protein shake is simple. I use vanilla protein powder (my roommate also has cookie dough protein powder.. YUM) 1 scoop + Silk light almond milk... It is a little sweet but you can buy the unsweetened plain almond milk to make it less so I imagine. It's fast, delicious and I don't have to think twice about making it.

P.S. It WON'T make you bulky!

So, based on my experience in the restaurant industry and the number of restaurant employees at most restaurants I have either been or seen taking smoke breaks I bet there is a few spare minutes you could cram something down your throat in the course of your 7 hours at the job. Either that or grab something on your way out the door.

Bottom line: I don't think you're applying yourself
