Fruit high in sugar

Hi All
I was wondering if I could ask for some advice please, I have been tracking my food carefully using MFP, but I am constantly blowing my sugar allowance, with two pieces of fruit for snacks and I have a tbl of Maple Syrup on my morning poridge.
So I was wondering how other people control their sugar and is fruit sugar 'allowed' so to speak as its natural sugars, just looking to educate myself more on how to hit my sugar targets or learn to control my diet better as i dont eat loads of fruit by any means.
Thank you in advance

Have you re-run the Goal settings since Xmas - the allowances changed.

All sugars are natural. 200g of lower sugar fruits (eg two apples) is 20 grams or less. Avoid grapes and banana as they're the highest %.
Lose the maple syrup if you're concerned, that's probably 12g+ on its own.0 -
Thanks for the advice appreciate it and the link, I will have a read.
Cheers0 -
Even diabetics are allowed 3-5 servings of fruit per day. The way MFP tracks sugar, honestly, I think it is not worth bothering with, you will just get paranoid.0

I do not track sugar and track fiber instead. Fruit has fiber but it also has other nutrients and is healthy. These threads usually start a storm so I will also say I have no health concerns that requires me to track my sugar intake.
WTG on the healthier lifestyle! :drinker:0 -
Sugar is irrelevant unless you have a specific medical condition that requires monitoring it. Keep your calories and overall macros in line and don't worry about it.
Besides, real maple syrup is awesome for you.0 -
If you are tracking carbs, you are already tracking sugar as it's just a carb. Track something else like Fiber.0

This. Not to mention, MFP sugar allowances are incredibly low. Most people say they go over the number MFP gives you by eating breakfast alone. Don't worry about the sugar- like others have suggested, I suggest tracking fiber instead.0 -
To reiterate what has been covered already, the sugar found in fruit is not an issue. Fruit is a complete package of food that includes fiber, water, various micro-nutrients and minerals, as well as macro-nutrients. The problems with sugar arise when the rest of the food is stripped away from the sugar; when one single macro-nutrient is isolated from the plant, and then eaten in concentrations not found in nature.
Eat all the fruit you want!!!0 -

I see you posting your opinion all the time as if it is fact.....your opinion is almost always wrong . . . You should start every post with "I think" or "In my opinion"
Whoever said to avoid bananas .. tisk tisk.0 -

If you would like to eat sugar, go right ahead. Maybe you could take up smoking, too?0 -
I'm new and I was thinking the same thing. I went over my daily sugar by eating fruit (apples) and was like.....What the?
Thanks for posting this question.0 -

The onus of proof is on the person making the claim. You're making the claim, you provide the evidence.0 -

No one needs to rebut your opinion. The point was that you speak as if it's fact. That was rebutted just fine I think.0 -
Honestly when I started I worried about that too, but not anymore. If the sugar is natural from raw fruit, then I am not concerned. I just make sure I pay attention to the rest of it. I guess it's working for me as I eat lots of fruit and I have dropped 20 pounds in my first 50 days on here.0

Umm, no Diabetics are not. Diabetes runs very heavy in my family including myself.
The recommendation for fruit and starchy vegetables is 1-3 servings per WEEK not day. The rest should come from non-starchy and green leafy vegetables.
Every Dietician and Endocrinologist I have seen makes the above mentioned recommendation to me for the past 10 years.0 -

Hi, funky forager. Instead of maple syrup (I love it too, but very rarely indulge), try stevia. I put it on my wheat flakes in the morning. It's very sweet, it's natural, and has no calories or glycemic load. Speaking of which, I would recommend learning about the glycemic index and glycemic load. Here's a pretty good overview: http://www.glycemic.com/GlycemicIndex-LoadDefined.htm
Here is a list of fruit with GI values from low (good) to high (not good): http://www.lowglycemicdiet.com/fruitsgi.html
Here is a downloadable PDF of the 2008 international table of GI/GL values for a vast amount of foods: http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/suppl/2008/09/18/dc08-1239.DC1/TableA1_1.pdf
Finally, just for informational purposes, here is a considerable body of information about sugar, with an awesome title (Sugar, the White Satan!): http://www.rayandterry.com/blog/sugar-the-white-satan/0 -
What is sad is the OP asked a genuine question. But someone from the "sugar is evil" crowd has to chime in with misinformation. :grumble:
You people act like we are saying to feed yourself multiple tablespoons of sugar just for the fun of it. It's fruit and it's ok for those who do not have a medical reason. Hopefully the OP can see through the self righteousness!

Maybe ignoring it and sticking to the question in hand will stop this thread being an Sugar is good/evil debate (every thing in moderation - right).0 -

I do not know if recommendations vary that much based on where you live, or if there is something else going on, but my grandafther lived to his late 90s with controled diabetes, on an almost vegetarian diet (very little meat, like 2-3 times a month), several servongs of fruit per day, and diabetes controlled mainly by diet and small doses of oral meds. Following the plan his endocrinologist made for him.
I had 3 times gestational diabetes, my meal plan had 3-4 servings of fruit per day every time. To follow the plan I actually had to increase my total fruit per day. I remember checking diets for diabetics on several medical sites, and all had several servings of fruit per day, as well as sertvings of starchy vegetables, grains etc, just distributed throughout the day.0
