how not to offend the MIL

I need help, desperately!!! It's a matter of urgency, cause I don't know what to do!

My in-laws, the snowbirds, just got back from down south and invited us to dinner tonight. My MIL ALWAYS makes meat & potatoes types of meals, with desserts like pie or cake, and I'm doing a low carb thing right now. My husband even scolded me last night cause I said I wanted potato oles and he's all like "it's not on your diet!!!!" so I had to concede. So, I'm sure tonight he's going to get all up on me if I don't stick to my low carb thing while at his parents. His mom might freak if I don't eat her food, I mean she hates the fact that the husband tells her he likes my cooking more than hers, and I just have to sit in the corner and not say a word.

However, one of my barfly regulars has said they're going to bring me a half rack of ribs tonight. So, I could still get my massive protein, and not have to worry about the carbs at the in-laws house. Plus it would keep the scolding to a minimum. But, what if he forgets my ribs? I would then be stuck at the bar until 2:30AM with a stomach that's about to crawl out of my body and start searching for any food on its own while I try to dj with an animated corpse that's lacking on energy.

Oh, and I just can't allow myself a cheat day yet cause I'm going to Baconfest on Sunday.......

    As far as MILs go . . . I got rid of mine years ago.

    eat the meat, eat the veg, skip the potatoes and have some pie and eat half the crust :)

    take a couple of protein bars to work with you for backup

    Why can't you tell your MIL that you are on a low carb diet? Will she throw potatoes at you and force feed you pie and cake? Just tell her and don't eat any high carb foods. Even if she tries to force it on you, just say no. She will eventually get the hint.

    OP - if you're doing the low carb thing, Baconfest is not a cheat day.

    First of all, kudos to the hubby for slapping those potato oles out of your hands (if those were the Taco Johns oles, he totally saved you). It will be tough with the mother in law - she won't understand and it will be a big drama fest if you don't eat her food (I'm from Iowa and that's how my mom is). Eat protein before, be nice to mom but decline, get the ribs even if you have to break into Famous Dave's, and enjoy baconfest. bacon bacon bacon bacon bacon bacon.....

    The answer is simple.... eat your MIL... she will be carb free and loaded with protein. AND then you have no more worries going forward.

    Just a point on the prep... you might need to tenderize her meat with a hammer first, that can be done pre or post mortem

    If they dish up, eat your meat and whatever low carb veg may be on the plate, push the potatoes around a little and spread them on the plate so they look at least 'tasted'. Ask for seconds of meat & low carb veg if desired, will make MIL feel good without realizing the potato trick. If you get to dish up - put as little potato on the plate as you think you can get away with and just don't eat it.

    Dessert - same deal - cut it up, mush it around and pretend you've eaten some while you have a scintillating conversation about their trip. When you are 'done', take your plate to the kitchen & slip the evidence into the garbage. NO GUILT - this way of eating is not on your health plan and can be considered 'garbage'.

    If you are there very often, I feel sorry for you... your hubby should also get some balls (sorry if I offend but...) and stick up for your eating plan to his mum - without using insensitive words if possible.

    I'm scared she's going to serve asparagus again and I don't think any of the bar patrons want to experience what happens if I consume that

    I don't understand why you can't tell her you are low carb and say no to the asparagus. Are you not an adult? What is so wrong with actually communicating instead of worrying and trying to lie and plot how you can get out of eating this and that? Just tell her. She might be more receptive than you think.

    I'm afraid there'd be way more fat content than actual protein here to really make this worth my time. my FIL on the other hand......

    possibly but you could still get rid of her so you don't have to eat her food anymore. you live near a hog farm?

    You could treat it like you would bear meat... stew or maybe meatballs you cook all day. OR there is potential for MIL-bacon!

    Maybe you should just stay at home since everything foodwise is a huge issue/problem

    Eat a small portion of the carbs and move on. Life is too short to sweat the little stuff like a few carbs. Good luck!
