So I'm seriously thinking about keeping my 7 month old pit bull foster puppy. Ok, I'm IN LOVE with this dog! She LOVES me and my kids..and hubby is warming up to her so....

I need a name! Her name is Ruby but I'd love to change it. Should I since she's only 7 months? If so, what should I change it to? I love the names Bailey, Shiloh, and Sadie but my daughter said they are all horrible ideas!

Any good female dog names? I need some quick!
Thanks guys!

Agree with your daughter, those are all terrible names, sorry.

I like Ruby! It's a classy, solid name.

She told me her name is Ruby.
  • Does your daughter have a favorite Disney film? Name her from that. My animals are named after sleeping beauty. Aurora and Samson. Look the movie up and get all the names you will be amazed at the ones you did not know.

Past female dog names in my family:
    Lady
    Lucy
Babe (as in the pig, not the Big Blue Ox)
Miller (my Dad likes his beer)
    Suzie
Autumn (We actually call her Coward)
    Syrai (Sih-rye)
Old Girl (she was a dog that just wandered into the yard. Pretty old, but she answered to it.)

My current Pit-Lab cross is named Sable. I wanted to name her Raven (because she's black) but my hubs said it would be silly to name a dog after a bird. He felt Fuliginous also was not an acceptable dog's name.

I've been told that two-syllable names that emphasize the last syllable are easier for dogs to hear long distance. Have no idea if it is true, but it would appear that we name quite a few of our dogs that way by chance anyhow. :)

    Shiro-white in Japanese
    Sakura- cherry blossom in japenese

Or pick a name that sounds close to ruby (that ends with a y or an "e" sound) so she isn't as confused. For example if somebody randomly started calling you "Bob" you wouldn't know what they were talking about, but if they called you "Liz" you would know it is probably a nickname.

My dog's name is Kirkland, after Costco. So unless you have an obsession with large grocery stores like my family apparently does, I can't be much help!

I do like Ruby though, she seems happy with that :)

    +1
Can't read it without singing it. :drinker:
  • We named our female Pitbull "Euphie," I really don't know where we got that.
Anyway, Ruby is cute. If you asked me for a suggestion, just don't, I'm not good at that. LOL

Ruby sounds like a great name for her - she looks like one!

My dogs name is "Sweet Pea" - we desperately wanted to change it when we adopted her, but it stuck solid, We love her like crazy so the name sort of grew on us (She is a Shar-Pei/Boxer mix).

Kudos to you for fostering! Foster fails are the best way to go (I have two..)

I always threaten to name our next dog "Ceeaetee" just to mess with people.
