I was at the grocery yesterday to pick up a few things. They had a sale on Kettle brand chips. My kryptonite. Sometimes I know better than to buy them; I can just walk past, not put them in my basket, and ten seconds later I don't have to deal with any further decisions. If I bring them home, sometimes the just disappear way too fast. I wonder how that happens. Actually, I know.
Even if I weigh out 28 grams and give myself permission for another 28, well... I can even reseal the bag with my vacuum sealer, but the trouble is, I actually know how to open the bag again. Yeah.
Well, I knew I've been under my calorie goal for a couple weeks, and the scale has been responding. I risked it. Worst case scenario? A 750 calorie slip-up. Well, in reality only a 450 calorie slip up since I would have planned to have 300 calories worth when I opened them.
I even figured I wouldn't open any last night. Then I looked at my food diary. Clearly I had room for some. I weighed out 28 grams and went to the other room and sat down, logged them in my diary, and enjoyed the crispy unsalted goodness. It is no surprise that I went and refilled another 28 grams. When I added a second serving to my diary, I was still under on calories. But alas - I was not 150 calories under, and a third serving would put me over.
Here's the victory, and you don't even need me to write it because you know what it is: I vacuum sealed the bag and put them back in the pantry for another day. Then I waited ten minutes and brushed my teeth and ate nothing else for the rest of the evening.
Two servings for the win!26 -

Fit2btied2016 wrote: »LOL, you cracked me up, Bart! As far as the number of clothes go? Yes, you could call it minimalism, being practical, "pulling a Steve Jobs," or "owning a capsule wardrobe." There is nothing wrong with any of those things. I have worn several types of uniforms over many decades, and I quite enjoyed it--I never had to worry about what to wear on top of already stressful jobs, and I always saved money, etc. Uniforms help identify teams/crews/staff for outliers and the public, and it helps in presenting a professional image. These days there is so much sloppiness all over the place, that I would rather see someone neat and tidy and wearing the same kinds of clothing each day than seeing all the pj's, leggings, slippers, and sloppy anything, and all the ripped jeans and crud.
The irony is that people actually spend money to buy ripped clothes, when all they have to do is rip them themselves to look like a homeless person or a bum. People spend hundreds of dollars on these stupid jeans, LOL. Bunch of suckers...
If you showed up for a job interview with me with ripped or tight or sloppy anything, or overdone or weird make-up, you would not get hired, and I wouldn't even give you an interview. I don't care what age the person is either, and it wouldn't matter the job.
Now, if you showed up in well-fitting clothing, and it's tailored, or a nice suit, or you are dressed like Grace Kelly, or otherwise look like you give a darn? You deserve the interview, because you show you not only respect yourself, but you respect my time, and therefore me.
Clothes reveal so much about a person.
And indeed, clothes do reveal much about a person. In my case, I am not trying to project any particular image of myself, but I like to think that it reveals I am more interested in what is important to me and not in some shallow image. It also unavoidably (and I don't want to avoid it either) that I am comfort-oriented. I don't see the point of wearing a crew-neck or a V-neck and a shirt, when a turtleneck accomplishes the exact same goal while being significantly more comfortable, at least to me.
Over the decades, that has made me fashionable, old-fashioned, retarded, artistic and smart, all while not changing a thing, just depending on the fashion of the day. I am a bit like the broken clock that it is correct once or twice a day, depending on whether it is a digital (I am a fan) or an analog style (not a fan).

I never liked work costumes. Neckties are costumes. Suit coats are costumes. I am fortunate that where I live, people don't generally have a problem with people wearing khakis or jeans (or Carhartt pants) to work as long as they are in good condition. When I was still working, I could get nice button-up collared shirts at second hand shops. I have SO MANY. I got to the point that I made an agreement with myself; if I wanted to bring one home, I had to get rid of one. It might even be the one I just brought home, so I better really love it.
I always carry a small notepad and pen, so a shirt with a pocket helps. I still wear these shirts in retirement. Perhaps over the next summer I'll start wearing T-shirts again; I have some nice ones that I like as well.
I actually did buy a nice pair of slacks a few years ago before I traveled across the continent for a life-event for a family member. They live in a part of the country where they are still stuck in a time when you have to "dress up." I wore them for that one weekend; it was right before I started my weight loss, so they are kind of huge now. Waste of money.
Even people who go to places of worship wear jeans and no ties. I remember going to one dressed in a suit like I used to where I used to live. I realized it was not necessary. Around here, we dress for comfort. Function over form. Of course things full of holes are a different story. I do keep old jeans with holes, but just for working around the house when I don't want to ruin my nicer pairs, and I always keep one nearly-new pair for "dress up" stuff.
I'm more likely to do "funky formal" weird dress-up. If there's an event I need a coat and tie, I will pass. I would sometimes wear a nice wool sport coat to work, just for fun. People would *kitten* their head because it was not that normal for me. Or anyone. Some managers wore ties. I actually was always surprised that some supervisors dressed like schlubs - way more casual than I. Ratty T-shirts untucked and worn-out jeans. Whatever. Glad I don't go there anymore.4 -
I'm back in the gym for the first time since covid.14

my most recent non scale victory is fitting into the dress I wanted to wear for my elopement last year. I remember asking my now hubby to zip it for me and he was like "I'm sorry hun, but there's just no way it's going to zip" cue me being devastated. 11 months later and 22 pounds down I tried on the dress the other day and it fits BEAUTIFULLY! I was able to zip it completely, whereas last year it was several inches to small. I showed my husband and he talked about how gorgeous I looked in it. I haven't felt that beautiful in a very long time, I could have cried. Our anniversary is next month so I will be wearing said dress for our anniversary dinner and I cannot wait!! I know you all will understand my excitement, it really is the little things.32

I recently started meditating, and was surprised by how much easier it is to sit cross-legged, and how much easier it is to get up from the floor too. I knew losing weight would help, I just didn't realize how much it would actually help! A very nice surprise.21

Wynterbourne wrote: »Not a NSV in the strictest sense of the term, but it made me laugh and is something I would have never thought of it I hadn't experienced it myself. So, my husband drives us places most of the time. I haven't needed to go anywhere by myself in a couple of months. I got my paperwork to renew my license plate tags last week and decided to go out today and do it. I get in the car and realize my butt has shrunk enough that my rearview mirror was now pointed too far up and I couldn't see the bottom of my rear window. LOL. I had to readjust it now that my head is lower in my seat than before. Not a side effect of losing weight that the average person would think of.
Hahaha! Best NSV! Love it!3 -
I went out to see a band perform last weekend and danced for over three hours straight. Not only was I confident enough to dance enthusiastically in front of many strangers, but I was confident enough to do it in the front of the room, not worrying about taking up space or blocking the view of those behind me.
Also, my ankles didn't hurt the next day.17 -
I felt healthy enough to walk to the post office today. I got there and back at a decent pace without any significant discomfort more than I get just walking around the house. I didn't really think of that as a victory, but it was. I'm getting a little better every day.
Here's my NSV: On the way over, I walked through our local food co-op. They have a hot bar, and I figured I'd go see what kind of soups they had today. Nothing special, but they had an item on the hot bar that I often just buy because I enjoy it so much. It's not the healthiest option. I often don't have the determination to just walk away without getting some.... often more than I should. Well, today I looked at them, turned around, and walked out the door and on up to the post office. I could have stopped back by on the way home... and I did not.20 -
These things come in threes perhaps. I had another one.
This one actually does involve a scale, but not a body weight scale. I wanted a snack. I decided to have some roasted Oregon hazelnuts. They are so delicious and have protein and healthy fat.
I took the lid off the jar I'm storing them in, I put the jar on my food scale, and I got a tare weight. I took the jar and poured some into my palm. I said to myself, "That is twelve grams." I put the jar back on the scale, and guess what? It said 12g.
My eyeball is, for the moment, calibrated. I will keep using the scale to keep my eyeball calibrated. There's another discussion I should post this to, and I will....10 -
My name is Mary, 65 from Pennsylvania.
Been MIA for a few months but still logging in everyday since I started MFP 5/14/21.
Unfortunately lost my mojo and gained a lot back but not all Thank God! Need to get back on track and focused. I bought a NEW to me, gently used, Commercial PreCor EFX 835 Elliptical. It was delivered the beginning of November, as others here know I wore my previous 10+ year old one out from my extensive workouts. Stopped using it mid November to get my Christmas shopping done earlier than my norm. I was planning to start back up a week ago but had a GI bug and very weak. I restarted today but very slow at 45 minutes and 3 miles compared to my 3 hour historical workout sessions. I will MAYBE workup to it again.
So my NSV is getting myself back on track again! And before I gained back everything I lost!10 -
I went to a party in the catacombs (about 5 stories underground) and I had no trouble getting back up!10

I usually run with the dog and average a 13 minute mile (thanks to all the stops he makes along the way). Today, he refused to go so I was finally able to run by myself.
Happily surprised to discover that I can comfortably run a 10:30 mile.

after logging the calories upon grilled cheese sandwich assembly, I decided to not include one of the pieces of cheese because it was going to be to much calories.17

I ordered new workout clothes in a smaller size and was mentally bracing myself for them to not fit and the disappointment I'd feel, and they fit like a glove! I was over the moon.18

my neighbor bought me over a fitted coat to see if I could wear it, fit great! They were too big to wear it so I got it.8

Started out on a 3-4 mile walk/run with the dog, but the windchill was soooo cold and I wasn't excited about it. When the dog sat down after a block and refused to go any further, I thought I'd drop him off and go without him. Instead I said I'm not feeling this either and decided to do a workout video in the much warmer living room that I hadn't done in a while.
My NSV is that I was punching harder, jumping higher, squatting lower and felt so, so powerful compared to all the times I did it before. Even burned way more calories according to my apple watch.
When I was done my son came out of his room to tell me I was shaking the whole house! LOL17 -
I need more belt holes!18

I just tried on a bunch of tops and sweaters that were too tight in early fall. I wasn't expecting any to fit, but most do! If I hadn't tried them on, I would have missed my chance to wear them this season. I am enjoying the "new" additions to my wardrobe.11

I got some scary medical news that made losing significant weight pretty much mandatory. In the months since then, diet and exercise changes have improved all my test results quite a bit. I'll have to take fewer (maybe no) meds, and odds are I'll live longer, feeling better!
Also, I'm having the odd experience of going back to clothes I haven't worn in years, as my jeans from just a few months ago are far too big20 -
