I´m a Farmacy student and yes, I did those kind of test but in a laboratory in my university. To sum up, the test said that I have predisposition to cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

Basically, DNA has different positions and SNPs are variations in these positions. If you have a variation (a SNPs) in a particular position you have predisposition to this kind of deseases.

Maybe your results are like mine and you have predisposition to this deseases ( actually, you are insulin resistant). This results just mean that you have to care a little bit more about the food you eat and do some excersise, nothing else.

However, you said that you did the test online (or thats what I understood). This test can´t be done online because they need you DNA. Also, they are really expensive, so I don´t think any web would do them for free.

I hope it helped you. Sorry if I got something wrong. :)

You mail in a sample. They calculate ancestry results and then for ****s and giggles offer you the raw data to download. You can then upload this data to the database thing online. Sorry if I was unclear. Thank you for your answer. I understand that the genetic markers indicate an "increased chance" of or "predisposition" towards certain things and don't mean that you have it. I just wanted to know if there is science to back up the predisposition thing or if its complete crap.

It was 99 dollars for the ancestry test thing that includes the raw data to do with what you will.

I'm curious what you found out about your ancestry? Any surprises there? Was the information worth the money. Will it change the way you approach anything?

Not an RD or a doctor, but wouldn't insulin resistance result in wanting a diet closer to lower carb, low-to-moderate protein, and higher fat?

This databases are officials, I mean, that´s how professionals do it. Both the results and the genes she carries are accurate.

The interpretation of what those genes mean in terms of diet and excersice are not accurate. They can´t tell you what to eat or how to excersice. The test just show a predisposition to a desease. Any other interpretation is not valid.

Because they said a dr needs to administer the test for them to give out health results. The validity of said results was not in question.

Like, results were showing increased risks for certain cancers/diseases and people were taking medical action based on them so the FDA said this test needs to be classified as a medical device and not distributed without a dr.'s consent.
    [/quote]

If you give out results without any kind of actual testing, then yes, the validity of the results is in question. DNA testing is way, way more complicated than just plugging data into a website.

DNA is for determining genetic relationship for ancestry, crime and if one is right for a procedure (transplant IE.)

It DOESN'T determine how fast you run, how high you jump, how strong you'll be, etc.

    So stick to calorie deficit.

That's what most people have been saying. However someone has pointed out that the company involved has been busy NOT complying with FDA requests and also have been even busier marketing whatever part of their offerings they are allowed to market.

Maybe they don't have time to get on the new info?

You'rs said you can't jump, huh?

*whispers* BTW what the eff is lysine dependence? someone came in here with this sciency word I don't know and to me that's as unfair as if I type in a foreign language which I'm not allowed to do. Can you fill me in with all your credentials? Was she saying something bad about my momma?

I totally read that as determining a pre-disposition to commit crime.

This test is safe and really accurate. Mabye the OP company hasn´t proved or garanteed that it is, I don´t know. I´m just saying that, scientifically, it´s completely proven to be accurate.

    What exactly is really accurate?
She took results from one test and used another site to interpret the data.

Are you talking about the results of the genes she carries? Or the interpretation of what those genes mean in terms of diet and exercise?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure this is where my skepticism comes into play here...I don't really question the results of the genes, but I do question the dietary and fitness prescription...

So yeah...guess you'd have to call be a big time skeptic here...

I'm curious what you found out about your ancestry? Any surprises there? Was the information worth the money. Will it change the way you approach anything?

It was worth it to me; I like knowing things. I am not in contact with my father and have never met anyone from his family. My mother's whole family pretty much including my mother herself has dark brown hair and eyes and much tanner skin than me. I learned that I have 41~% Irish ancestry so that might explain my pale redheaded blue eyed-ness. My dad is blonde with blue eyes in a picture I have.
I'd been wanting it for a long time but that is a lot of money, then I came out 200 dollars ahead after a bachelorette party at a casino and decided to go for it. I don't know if I would have paid that much if that hadn't happened. But it was a fun thing to do. I also learned I have 2.8% neanderthal DNA supposedly so that's kind of funny. That's about average I think.

From my mother's side(I'm assuming, they don't actually separate what parent the genes come from) I am French and 12% native american. Which matches up with what my family says we are. But everyone I know here says they're cajun because we're in Louisiana and evvvveryone I know here claims to have some native american in their family so I didn't actually know if these things were true. We don't have records or family trees or any research done.

I personally wouldn't trust a website that offers DNA tests.
Your best bet is to speak to a nutritionist to find a plan good for your needs.

So I should not trust the ancestry results? The website that offers DNA tests is for ancestry, it just also included raw DNA data/a list of SNPs my DNA contains.

The second website ran that list against a database of researched genetic markers and showed me which ones I have. None of it is marketed towards weight loss. I did the Promethease thing to find out what medications I might react poorly to.

I really wouldn't. I mean, there was no DNA testing back in the 1800/early 1900s, so how can you be sure it's accurate?
In regards to medication, you really should talk to a doctor.
The fact that the FDA got involved, and that another website is letting you transfer over info from a website that was told to cease and desist by the FDA would raise red flags to me.

Lysine is an essential amino acid that has to be replenished through food or supplements. Since it's essential for good health and regulation of some other aminos and minerals, I would think that every one is lysine dependent.

Rather than "try everything until you find what works for your body," I was going to try this first. If there is any science behind it. If you're telling me there isn't then thank you for answering my question.

Not sure how trying this is not covered under "try everything until you find what works for your body".
If it works, it works. How you got to it might be in question, but it is a method to try.

But...currently you are dropping 1-2lbs per month...and now going to try other things to see IF they are faster....but they might be SLOWER....so where will you be then?
How long will you try something before you know if it is working, or if it is a failure?
Bird in the hand, or try for the 2 in the bush...which is it going to be?

My only input is that if you are insulin resistant, it's low carb, not low fat.

    I'm an insulin-resistant PCOS-er.

Someone posted a picture of Mr DNA from Jurassic Park.

The dinosaurs were engineered to be lysine sensitive, dependent, and that was the method to kill the project if things went sideways. IF they didn't receive a daily lysine supplement, they'd die.

Then nature found a way. I figured anyone that wanted to bust nerd cred hard enough to post a pic of mr dna, then they'd be able to get the reference.

    I was wrong.
