Paleo

I am curious if anyone is using fitness pal and doing the Paleo diet. I know with Paleo you don't really need to count your calories, but I seem to have hit a wall and have come back to fitness pal to see where the hang up is. If you are doing Paleo and fitness pal how is it going for you.

Lots of folks are. The group linked below is a really active and SUPPORTIVE group. I suspect some count, some don't.

    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/forums/show/54-primal-paleo-support-group

I bet they can help (and won't waste your time telling you not to do paleo).

    (I lost without counting)

    Best of luck!

Paleo a little over a month, lost 25 pounds. I count nothing. This is the only plan in 33 years of trying hard that has helped me on so many levels. I could write for a week about all the good. It works for me.

You must be eating non paleo approved toxic foods if you have hit a wall. Follow a strict paleo diet and you will automatically improve your health and lose weight until you have reached your paleolithic set point

OP: you may notice this thread quickly devolves into mocking of paleo. The group may better be able to answer your question without all the nonsense.

So you're saying every book on the subject is actually mocking it's readers, since that is the marketing spiel you see on the jackets of the books and websites. Good to know

true. If you find your way in any direction besides what the abbreviation zombies say, they will try to eat you. Because they are hungry.

I suspect you'll find your answers with a little logging. I like the whole idea of eating natural unprocessed foods since our bodies have sort of evolved for that, but I'm pretty sure there were fat cavemen out there too if they happened upon a large patch of berries or a group of slow moving wooly mammoths.

I mean, it's not like our bodies, in the last few hundred years, invented the means of storing fat. If we eat too much our body is kind enough to save any extras for later

Anyway, good luck with it all. I too suspect the Paleo group would be a good home for non-judgemental advice since most everyone on here thinks what they do is the exact right thing for everyone else to do.

You don't need to track to lose weight or to have a calorie deficit regardless of what diet you follow. But, you do need a calorie deficit for natural weight loss. Eliminating foods may make the deficit easier to obtain, but you still need it.

It's also good to remember that weight loss isn't always consistent. You don't say how long it's been since you hit a wall, but if it's only been a few days you might just need a little patience.

I eat Primal (more permissive version of Paleo) and track my calories. When I wasn't getting the expected weight loss, that's what drove me to the doctor to figure out what was up. After figuring that out, I still count calories -- mostly because I want to make sure I'm getting enough protein and I limit carbs. I found limiting carbs helped out a lot with the weight loss journey.

I envy those that don't have to count calories or those that can eat a ton of carbs -- I'm just not one of them.

I eat paleo most of the time, and it works really well for me. When I eat this way I don't get hungry all the time, and I lose my cravings for junk making it easier to stay on track calorie wise. I've tried the eat the heck what you want diet, but that's how I ended up gaining these extra 10 pounds that I'm trying to lose. So now I'm going back to what actually works. And calories in calories out, but when you are not starving all the time and you don't have any cravings it makes it easier to stick to something

Only works for some people. I recommend still counting your calories.

No, most everyone on here thinks it's unnecessary to try fad diets.

Honestly, I WISH I could afford to buy grass-fed beef and freshly caught salmon. It sounds delicious.

I tend to stay away from things that make you do anything other than just eat at a deficit.

Too many rules, too many foods you can and cannot eat, too many recommendations. Etc.

Just so much easier to be able to eat whatever food you want just in more responsible ways.

No, most everyone on here thinks it's unnecessary to try fad diets.
Actually, I'd suspect many have tried true fad diets. Probably some of the same folks who weigh, measure, count, and calculate macros whilst stating they aren't on a diet.

I tend to stay away from things that make you do anything other than just eat at a deficit.

Too many rules, too many foods you can and cannot eat, too many recommendations. Etc.

Just so much easier to be able to eat whatever food you want just in more responsible ways.

The rules are a bit off-putting.

I remember prepping dinner and I had to look up if I could eat corn, and the rules said no. I then had to look up why. It's not really clear why. So, I just ate it. then, I realized at it's base, I think paleo is an OK diet, but all the rules were silly and somewhat random. Like they didn't have any over-arching thing you could follow. So, I kind of gave up. Then I decided to try Primal, which is paleo with Dairy, and a bit more relaxed on all the rules of paleo. And, then, I decided that was kind of stupid. LOL. So, I just went back to normal. I don't like rules. LOL
yeah, and it probably works if you stick with it but the more rules/restrictions you put on a new way of eating the more likely soemone will just give it up and still have not learned anything.
Eating at simply a deficit teaches you how to eat in portions and can be adapted to any food/restuarant/etc.

The one thing that always gets me is if someone is overweight how do you expect them to constantly follow all those rules and stipulations when they couldnt adhere to the most simple of rules for weight loss/gain?

This sort of thinking always amazes me. Maybe, just maybe, what you think is the easiest, simplest, etc. is not the same for others. Perhaps, maybe, just maybe, they find other rules and restrictions easier, simpler, etc.

Such an obvious, simple concept but seems to elude so many here on this site.

So you think all the rules, stipulations, foods to stay away from is easier than just counting calories and eating at a deficit?

    More power to ya then.

While you scour the menu and supermarket for foods you are allowed to eat on paleo, those who simply count calories will already be done with dinner and out the door.

Hmm, then I wonder why there are so many threads on here from people wondering how to go about eating Paleo.

Not everybody is doing it because it's easy or simple for them. Most people try it because they think they're going to lose weight doing it.

Yes, obviously. After you figure it out, it's not very hard and you find most of it in the butcher and produce sections -- pretty easy. And it's totally fine for some to think Paleo is easier for them and others to prefer calorie counting. Why is that a bad thing?

And for those that are paleo and don't count calories, I imagine they're the quickest of the bunch because they don't have to weigh, measure and log everything.
