This is why people are fat.

No! The vast majority of folks are not concerned with calorie counting other than occasionally looking at the nutritional label on something they are buying. Calorie counting is not the norm for most and that includes factoring in calories burnt. A surprising number of folk get by quite nicely by eating in moderation and keeping active.

I only log intentional exercise. The rest ( walking to and from public transportation, walking to the store and back home with two fairly heavy bags...each trip 30 minutes, climbing 6-10 times a day from the 4th floor , where I live, down to the street and back up again, gardening, walking the dog etc ) I count as " lifestyle ". The only other thing I used to log was my weekly stint in a soup kitchen, because I cooked anywhere from 10-14 hours almost non-stop, which meant being on my feet, walking and carrying sacks of food, heavy pots and trays.....but that is it.
If someone however wants to count their trip from the sofa to the freezer for that third helping of ice cream as exercise, that is their business....even though I find it ridiculous.

Uh, no. That's worse than logging cleaning as exercise. What's next? Logging typing as exercise?

Tired of this attitude! What folks log as far as exercise is entirely their business NOT yours. Have you ever actually done a massive cleaning session getting up and down off of a ladder, going from ceiling to floor, lugging pails of water, constant motion cleaning, getting into every nook and cranny for 8 to 10 hours without taking much of a break? I do. And I did and will continue to log this type of cleaning when I do. And before you can say I will be back complaining I'm not losing weight, I am currently 109 lb, two pounds less than my goal weight of 111. It's surprising how I got there considering I logged cleaning as exercise on occasion! Oh, and I also logged heavy cooking sessions but I'm sure you will tell me that lugging heavy cooking equipment up and down stairs, standing for several hours, making several trips up and down stairs, lugging heavy cooking equipment again, and so shouldn't be logged. Well,

However, for those insisting on eating a 1,200 calorie diet consistently, this app will quickly show that you are burning more than 1,200 calories just on basic daily living. So, my rule of thumb is if an activity is outside of my normal activity I may count it and I may or may not eat back the calories. My activity level is 'active' so it really has to be something abnormal for me to count it (eg. normal cleaning not counted, heavy cleaning counted). Note, that I lost a couple pounds below my goal weight of 111 lb and did so while counting some calorie burns that others say not to. To each their own and if it works, go for it.

I think this makes sense. I mostly just log intentional exercise, but if I spend the day helping my parents move and carry around heavy boxes and such I can see kicking in some extra calories. I've had FitBit count lots of extra activity on days when I walk around for many extra hours (helping to set up for a large party and then serving at the party, for example) and while it didn't feel like intentional exercise to me I was exhausted afterwards and don't see why it would be wrong for someone without a FitBit to account for those calories, because it's NOT accounted for in normal activity for that person. And personally I'm not changing my activity level on a daily basis--I think it makes more sense to adjust on atypical days.

Beyond this, it's common here for people to put their activity level as sedentary even when they aren't realistically sedentary (and MFP encourages that by describing activity only in terms of your job). Sure, it's better to have a more accurate activity level (or use a FitBit to show you better what your activity is), but if people insist that they are sedentary they probably should be logging those activities that make them lightly active. If they aren't losing and ask about it and have 900 calories to cleaning every day and aren't actually employed as a cleaner, well, then that's something to address, but for many it makes up for the fact that they have a too low calorie goal because they aren't really as inactive as they tell MFP.

There's a little bit of a conflict between the negative attitude toward logging non-intentional exercise that one often sees on MFP and the idea that people shouldn't underestimate the calories they need, which one also sees.

All that aside, no, I wouldn't log driving. ;-)

I have a BodyMedia Fit, and driving burns only slightly more calories than sitting. There is no way you'll burn 400 calories driving 2.5hours unless you're in a NASCAR race.

:) I log cleaning. Not the day to day stuff like vacuuming or laundry or dusting. But once every other week or so, the house gets a good, deep scrub and I'm fully sweating and worn out! I log it as moderate/light cleaning, but it's not my normal routine, so I don't really see an issue with it.

I know this probably isn't what you're referring to, but I thought I'd share anyway.

No. Just this past week I ran into this attitude where a couple of folks were actually deleting people on their friends list BECAUSE they logged cleaning. It comes up over and over and over again in the forums that certain activities should not be logged and folks are rather sanctimonious about it. Well, no one should be shamed because they choose to log what ever activity they want in their diary. If OP wants to log driving, so be it. The choice is hers, no one else's. As long as she is aware that eating back those calories may not be the wisest. For some, logging driving or any other given activity may be a way of showing themselves they are in fact burning calories. As long as it works for them, so be it.

I didn't find my question laughable. We're all fed mixed information when researching weight-loss and I was actually shown a website with a list of arbitrary tasks and how many calories they burned. I also thought it seemed silly to count the exercise, thus my inquiry.

When driving calorie burn was calculated, it was in the 1950 when people didn't exercise and driving meant using a stick shift and clutch. I find calories burns intriguing and here is the list from my 1980s college nutrition class text book:

    Bookbinding .8 calories per minute
Cello Playing 1.3 calories per minute
Painting Furniture 1.5 calories per minute
Paring Potatoes .6 calories per minute
Reading Aloud .4 calories per minute
Shoe Making 1.0 calories per minute

    Start reading aloud now.

Well,

    Good grief. Simmer down.

F'realsies. Best take out that anger in the gym and count that in your log instead of "username has burned 400 calories doing 2 activities including 'barely moving' and 'fidgeting'"

ETA: I seriously doubt that everyone adding "cleaning" as an exercise is doing serious floor to ceiling, 4 hour long, sweat down your back, pail draggin' cleaning. But to answer your question, I log everything as 1 calorie because I tdee-20%. It's more accurate than logging (usually) heavily inflated calorie burns.

If your heart is noticeably pounding after your drive then yes, if your heart rate appears unaffected then no.

This is a pretty standard way of telling if something is exercise or not.

Driving 2.5 hours is said to burn around 400 cals.

That includes your waking BMR/RMR. The driving part would only add maybe 100 new calories of burn.

Exercise does not necessary have to get your heart rate up. It is any activity done to improve or maintain health. http://www.ask.com/wiki/Physical_exercise?o=2801&qsrc=999&ad=doubleDown&an=apn&ap=ask.com

If you're wearing a HRM and can calculate. It's too variable to judge between different individuals. Besides, if you take a nap after it's probably a wash.
