mine is closed
I'm not ashmed
I'm 46 years old and an athlete
I don't need some dingo looking through my food and commenting
LOL get a life0 -
Mine is open to friends and I've never received any negative comments & believe me my diet is not the best. Somedays are good and others are carb fests! I did have a friend ask me for my Tuscan white bean & sausage soup recipe. If you are highly sensitve maybe keep it closed. Good luck! :flowerforyou:0

Mine is closed but only because when I start this journey at 560 lbs. I kept hand written journals and to this day still prefer putting pen to paper so I don't use the diary option here.... I will use the database and plug recipe in to get info but prefer writing out my daily logs....
job well done. :flowerforyou:0 -
Mine's open.
I'm not sure under what circumstances I would keep it private.
The whole idea seems odd to me - why be ashamed of what you're eating?
Shame from what you're eating comes when people on your friends list make comments on your foods- whether asked for or not. While I'll admit that the advice given to me always came from good intentions, at that time, when I was still learning the ropes and what worked for me, it still made me uncomfortable.
And it's even worse for people who follow specific diet plans- I've had people post that they're locking their diary's due to people giving grief over things like intermittent fasting, being vegan, eating meat (yea, both... apparently people who are "mostly vegan" but sometimes indulge are the biggest offenders) or for just following anything but a "clean" plan.
Sometimes, you want the friend, but not the opinions... and having your diary closed is a way to do your thing while still "hanging out" with them.
I probably don't care enough about what other people think combined with a massive dose of thinking I know best about stuff. It's a heady mix.0 -
Mine is open. Personally, I don't think many people are looking at my diary - why would they? However, it's there if someone wants to check for new ideas (not likely to get them from me, but you never know). I occasionally check other people's diaries for inspiration, but I don't look at them to judge food choices.0

I like sharing my diary with friends but not with random people. It's just a preference based on my personality.
Obviously, if I were to ask a question like "Help, I'm not losing weight" or "am I getting enough protein," I would make it public first.0 -

Just because someone keeps their diary private doesn't mean they're ashamed. LOL
I just don't feel it's necessary to publish to strangers on the internet what I eat throughout the day.
I use this site primarily to log calories. First and foremost. For ME, not you or anyone else.
The forums and interacting with people here is secondary.
This...
After reading the entire thread...I was surprised to see how some feel more superior than others just because they had their diary one way or another...seriouly, does that really matter? We make many decisions every day. Keeping something like this open or not is not fatal and doesnt make you a better or worse person.0 -
Mine is closed for now because I'm a newbie, but I think when I start to know people here better I'll start to leave it open to MFP friends only
I like having it private because I can leave weird notes and reminders for myself haha! I also have weird habits too, and I can be 100% honest with myself without people being mean and judgemental.0 -

Mine is open to whomever wants to see it, jeez people it's only food...
As secretive as some of you are I really wonder if you try to hide your plate when you're in a restaurant! LoL0 -

I take my plate into the bathroom and eat in the stall, personally. What? No one else does this?0 -

I usually leave it closed, it's not really out of embarrassment for the most part its just because I hear of friends getting creeps downing their eating. Its one thing if you ask for advice or criticism on it. I know what I need to eat and not its really not that complicated but its not always on par with what I know and want.
I had it open for awhile because its now required for the posting to FB to happen. But since have closed it back because I decided I don't care if posts to FB right now. Maybe later I will reopen it.
I've kept MFP and the other supporting fitness apps from posting to FB from the beginning. My friends on FB are those I have a real life, in person connection to so only family and close friends. I don't need an app to tell them I'm making progress. They can see it for themselves0 -

closed diary =/= ashamed of what you're eating0 -
Mine's closed because it's my own damn business. I know I'm making decent choices and don't really need the peanut gallery to look at it.0

I do not have my diary open. I practice a low carb lifestyle and there are too many critics who seem to have an issue with that.
But I do applaud anyone that leaves their diaries open for all to view. I wish I had thicker skin to people's views and remarks!
As soon as you move away from the SAD, the critics feel the need to critique your diet. Some creep diaries for that very reason. Who needs that hassle in their life?0 -
I have never had an open diary since joining this site 3-25-13. I can be very black/white, competitive, etc. I know that I would be hypercritical of myself and if others questioned my choices it would REALLY bug me. I've been 100% honest with myself about every single bite I've eaten for the past year plus and I want to continue that.
My husband and I share our diaries a lot by having our respective computers open to MFP. We copy each others' meals and recipes and he can see my diary pretty much whenever...but I still don't even want to make our diaries shared by password because I am too afraid that I'd eat way too many pieces of homemade caramel or something like that (around the holidays for instance) and be sheepish about logging it, even though it's not like he is the Food Police I'd rather just keep it private.0 -
Mine is open to the public. Even if you are not on MFP and you pull up my profile you can take a looksie.0

I leave mine open, I leave notes occasionally. The reason I leave it open is to motivate myself really.0

closed diary =/= ashamed of what you're eating
I agree. Not everyone who keeps a closed diary is because of shame. Assuming that it is is wrong, and not fair to those who keep it closed.0 -

To be fair I did say I was unsure under what circumstances you would keep it closed. Being afraid of what others think and therefore being ashamed seemed like the only thing I could come up with.
Like I say, I don't get it.
Perhaps you can explain it to me, since you appear to have a better handle on it than me?0 -
Wow. Judgy aren't we.
If asking a question about something I don't get is judgy, then I'm judgy (although, in fairness I don't think that's a real word - I think you meant judgemental).0 -
Mine is closed because it's MY journey, and the information is for ME.0

As secretive as some of you are I really wonder if you try to hide your plate when you're in a restaurant! LoL
Well, my diary would be of no use to others because most of the entries are homemade dishes with creative names or a set of dishes that form a meal again with a creative name. For many dishes there's no indication of what the ingredients are and clicking the meal doesn't reveal the dishes. I have software for more accurate nutrient calculations so just put the entries in manually.0 -

I don't care. The question was "do you leave your diary open?" My answer was: "yes". But I didn't understand why anyone would close theirs. It really is that simple. Someone ****ed in your corn flakes this morning?0
