18 beers in one weekend. Assuming those are cans of, let's say Bud Light, that's about 2000 calories in the form of alcohol. This is why I'm glad I don't have much interest in drinking. It's just pointless calories. 6 beers probably isn't enough to get you drunk or even buzzed, so I just don't see the point. But hey, you like beer, so there's no need to completely cut it out. However, I don't think it would be that hard to only have a couple of beers instead of 6 in a sitting. Your food intake doesn't seem all that bad - my intake on weekends in higher, too, but it all evens out when I stay under my weekly goal (with I do 3 out of 4 weekends per month).

Bottom line: You don't have to guzzle down 18 beers in a weekend in order to be "social."

Yes, 18 beers of craft beer (high alcohol content) and you would still be passed out in an alley. Beer is an important part of my life (we make our own at home and I volunteer at local beer fests that raise money for charity. It all depends on type of beer and how much on a weekend. 18 is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more than normal. A better more quality beer = you drink less.

I hate beer, so I'm no expert, but I was specifically referring to a light beer like Bud Light or Miller Light. All I know is my husband has to drink about 10 Bud Lights before he's tipsy and he's only 5'9" 156 lbs and drinks very seldomly. For a bigger guy like the OP that clearly drinks often, I doubt he was passed out in any alley.

First I was making a joke about the alley. Quality over quantity when it comes to beer. The local brew is going to cost more but you get more bang for your buck and less calories. You don't see people chugging really powerful beer. :)

LOL. Two pints of Dogfish Burton Baton and I'm toast. Three pints and I could be passed out in an alley...

Dogfish for the win! I love that they serve that on Amtrak. Makes 4 hours on a train way less painful. :)

Just take smaller sips and make 3-4 beers last instead of drinking 6.

What time does the road in front of your home open? And once you reach goal do you go back to drinking beer or will you recognize socially you can start with water, have a beer, have water, well you get the point. Make small changes and recognizing your habits are the best way to change for the life ahead, so you can leave the life you had behind you.

Ok crossy - I can't run since it always leads my injuring myself. My routine is that I do cardio and lift weights at my local Y. I agree I need to make small changes and have done so the last couple weekends. Just need to continue making changes.

Thanks - another issue is my Y is only open on Sundays from 12-5 and I usually workout in the morning. I kinda use Sunday as my rest day. Good advice on the beer. I am trying to drink more water at social events. Six lite beers is a big improvement from what I use to drink. I would drink 8-12 beers (not always lite beer) during our weekend social events and eat until I became uncomfortable.

I have the same issue on weekends. My gym closes early and all of my homework is due on weekends. I prefer to get everything done first and then hit the gym but the hours are off.

The weekend is a great time to walk on the beach, go for a walk with a friend, hit some hiking trails. I feel that if I'm indoors at the gym on the weekend that I'm missing out on some sort of outdoor thing that I can't do during the week while at work. I can hit the gym during the week but I never have time for a hike. On weekends I'd rather be outside. I think the 12-5 gym is trying to send the OP a message. Get some fresh air and your brain and body will thank you!

Firstly - I understand the struggle with beer. I smashed a few pints this weekend too. (and loved it!) The weekends are yours for doing whatever you want. Don't let the bstards get you down.

Write it off - Today is a new week.

    Secondly - lol time.

Yeah, I'm not nor will I ever be a runner so I hear you on that. My hips and spine are uneven so I had to find sports that worked for me.

You need to find something that you love doing. It could be hiking, martial arts, or playing tourist in an area that you have not yet explored (pick some place different each weekend). Don't let the 12-5 gym hours squash your time to have fun. Also, don't do workouts that you can't stand.

    Yeah, me too--lake side.

That's my problem. Put me near water and I eat and drink everything. I bring healthy food up to Maine and end up eating a ton of stuff everyone shows up at my house with.

The "water makes me hungry" thing is real.

Good luck--I would say get a walk or hike in prior to sitting by the water with a beer.

We tend to eat or order out and have a lot of social activities. Friday it was golf with about 6 lite beers. Saturday - I did workout in the AM - but then it was poolside with about 6 lite beers, jalapeno cheddar brats (2) for lunch and then meat pizza for dinner. Sunday - no workout - left over pizza and then about 6 beers sitting poolside. A couple sweet treats too.

I feel like I am 10 lbs heavier today. It is difficult to get away from social activities because it is what we do ever weekend. We have about 10 close families in our neighborhood and we are always hanging out together.

Do I need to just go into hiding until I reach my goal and not be social?

Why not have water while you are hanging out. .....Or have some beers and work out more..... or choose between the cheddar brats and meat pizza.....choose one and then have some chicken for the other meal. Why do it all every day?

I definitely feel for you. I have similar issues on weekends as well. We have a pool, good size backyard and a fire pit, which means we're usually the house everyone comes to on weekends. My hubby, kids and I all love to hang out and socialize, but everyone feels like they need to bring snacks and drinks for the day. I try to offset this by having lots of fruit and lower calorie options, but I usually end up choosing the wrong things to snack on. And there is always way too much food for supper which means even more over-eating.

I've been trying to be more conscious of my activity and food on weekends. Yesterday, we decided to pack a picnic (which was lean turkey breast sandwiches, grapes, high fiber granola bars and lots of water) and head out to the trails for geo-caching. Spent about 4 hours out hiking before heading back home to swim and enjoy the sunshine. Yes, we did still order Chinese food for supper with some friends, but I tried to just take a little bit of things I like and there were no seconds! Sigh, baby steps...

Hang in there OP. Sounds like you're already making changes to your routine!

omg TEN he drinks ten of those things?

    barf.

perhaps if he drank a higher quality beer it would be less of an issue. seriously- that stuff is super gross- no wonder why you don't like beer if that's what he is drinking- it's like rat piss.

    OP- go for a WALK.
    Drink less.

There is no reason to be drinking that much beer- enjoy the beer as a beverage- not a vehicle.

That's what I did. Looking back at it, I don't know if it was the right decision.

It may be easier and more fun to just try and maintain during the summer and then drive down again come Labor Day.

Family, food, fun, and friends are important too.

I always do better on the weekend. I tend to have brunch, instead of breakfast and lunch, and I have more time to walk a few miles. Not to mention.... hello.... it's the weekend!

No! You can eat, drink and be merry on the weekends and still control you weight. Some tips that help me:

    1. Increase your exercise on the weekends. Get up a little earlier and really burn some calories to offset the calories you know you'll consume later.

    2. Eat a little lighter on weekdays so that your total caloires for the week average out to your goal.

    3. Bring/prepare dishes that are lower in calorie to social events. Having a salad before pizza can help you eat less pizza. Having a veggie tray to nibble at may help you eat one brat instead of two. Balance the good with the not-so-good.

I have the same issue! But instead of hating on the weekends, I try my best to just balance everything out. For instance, I knew that I was going to a BBQ on Saturday night with my friends and was going to be eating smoked sausages and drinking (lots of) beer. So I made sure to get in a solid 10k run on Saturday morning to even out those calories. I'm not always THAT proactive, but I find that if I at least make the effort to get a good workout in once a weekend then my progress isn't too derailed - and I still get to have my beer! :drinker:
  • U are not alone! I hate weekends too! it's like I do great while im working M-F then saturday and sunday the fridge is my worst enemy. i've even moved the scale to the kitchen to "de-motivate" me from over eating! Sighs..we'll get through..gotta keep pushing tho! Anyway, feel free to add me folks, I can use all the motivation in the world!!!

I hate weekends too. I myself had 9 beers Saturday evening. Right after a plate of 12 hot wings and 2 huge slices of an XL pizza. Don't beat yourself up over it. It happens & we have to live and enjoy life occasionally lol. The important part is not to give up. It can't be un-done. So move on & try to do better next weekend. I know one thing, I'm not going to waste my calories on beer anymore...

I have the same problem. It's like, all week long with work and planned meals and routines I do great, and then the weekend rolls around and even making the healthiest choices possible in each situation, sometimes the only options are go hungry/don't eat or go over calories. For example - this past Saturday I spent the entire day with friends helping get their new house ready to move in (cleaning and such). They obviously didn't have any food in the house yet, so it was Dunkin Donuts for breakfast, hot dogs and fries for lunch, then we hit up a local pizza place for dinner. Even eating only one donut, trying not to eat all my fries, and special requesting a salad with grilled chicken for dinner (and not snacking at all), and even with the activity from cleaning for 10+ hours, I STILL exceeded my goal by about 600 calories. Then yesterday was Father's Day, so it was a restaurant again for lunch and then (by special request from my husband) pulled pork and macaroni and cheese for dinner and cake for dessert - even controlling my portions to the best of my ability I went over by a TON. And, absolutely, something like this coming up once in awhile shouldn't derail me. But it feels like EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND it's the same thing, even if it's different situations. And even though I very rarely go over maintenance on weekends (though I often get close), and even though I try to eat a little under during the week to make up for it, I feel like it's got to play a huge part in why my losses are so slow.

If you have a poolside, you definitely have a pool, why not trying to tread water? You can surely do this two times during the day, and you will burn enough calories to cover at least 2 or 3 beers. And if you have a bike, you can go on a early morning bike ride on sundays, and you will add another impressive calorie burn that can help with the other 2 or 3 beers.

And, unfortunately, you will have to learn a little self control. You can have one brat instead of two, and a lot of veggies on the side, and you still are socializing with your guests. You don't need to eat two brats to be social, that's not true: you have to be there and to enjoy yourself, and the way you're enjoying yourself is up to you.

In the past weeks, I learned to say no to free croissants with my coffee, to that second beer during happy hour, to that handful of chips with my burgers... I learned to foresee that bottle of wine I planned all week for and to appreciate it to the last drop, and to say no to the Old Fashioned that used to come after.

It's hard to say no, but I appreciate it everytime I eat whatever I want because I have room for some indulgence because of my hard work.

First: it is against MFP rules to criticize spelling.

Second: the person that posted that comment is from Belfast (Ireland), so they use the "z" while in the US, we use the "s” in the same words. Got that?

I do not like weekends too but I show restraint; My son graduated preK and they gave us cake and drinks however I didnt have any cake. ( I purposefully had a protein shake beforehand) After his graduation we went to Applebee's and I ordered the Savory Cedar Salmon with grilled veggies. And then later that same day we went to a Frozen Yogurt place and I got a half cup serving of two flavors. I was under my calories for that day. The only thing I have a problem with on the weekends is that I dont get enough water like I do on weekdays and I bloat a little on Monday and Tuesday because of it.

I've resolved myself to the fact that I might be over on the weekends. I try my darnedest not to. and during the week I eat with good moderation to create my deficit, but I'm also human and like to indulge at times. They key for me is to make sure it isn't EVERY weekend.

Thanks, Ely - that's right, over here we think the rest of you are spelling it wrong! (Also, segastler, if you're going to criticise my spelling, at least use the right "you're" yourself ;-) )

And I wasn't trying to go off target. But seriously, beer - especially 6 pints in a sitting - is a lot of empty calories, and drinking will lower your inhibitions about, say, ordering that pizza. Can't see drinking and being near deep water as a good combination, either, but that's because I've seen it go wrong too often at work.

I'd say try cutting out the beer. And if you can't cut out the beer for a weekend, well, there's your problem.
