I was a cook right out of hs for 11 years, then I decided to lease a computer. looked inside it, researched the parts, thought, hey they are ripping me off, and this looks easy. Built my first computer from scratch a couple months after leasing my computer. AMD k62 500. Shortly after I quit my job, and went to school to get A+ and Net+. Since then been building computers, making interweb sites, and other computer / network related stuff. Not sure if that is nerdy or not, but I was a late bloomer none the less. I was pretty dorky in school and sat at the rejects of the rejects table.0

What's the difference between a nerd and a geek? I get them confused.
let me help you with a handy Venn diagram:
Been laughing hysterically at this ..... I can say with authority that I am neither a dork nor a dweeb .....0 -

Then you are, by definition, a geek. I think that's where I fall out on this Venn.0 -
I identify as geek. Pretty sure I have been there for quite a while.
Say anything different and I swear by my pretty floral bonnet I will end you.0 -
Ha, pretty much a geek myself.
And proud.0 -

I searched this in vain to find where "engineer" fell. I peeled up the word "nerd" and found it.
To all engineers - this is NOT a scratch and sniff. This has been verified.0 -

Same here, through and through.
And don't worry, I'll kill them with my brain for you0 -
"Nerds" and "geeks" are so much more attractive. Just sayin'.0

At 45 years of age, I still play D&D. Nerd level +10.
Yup, 43 and still playing too, actually we meet in less than an hour, so if you'll excuse me, I need to go summon my inner orc...0 -

Looks like I'm a geek then. (Normally I'm not socially inept although I do have my moments.)0

Most of the people who say they're "nerds" probably aren't. It's just cool to say you're a nerd these days. The bar is low in terms of criteria. Play video games? You can say you're a nerd (which is silly by the way because everyone in the post Nintendo generations grew up gaming). You don't even have to be smart anymore like the good old days. You don't need an odd hobby like collecting and mounting bugs.
Well aren't you fun?? I'm allowed to call myself whatever I like. I don't have to "prove" my nerdiness to anyone. I could show you my massive comic collection, all my swords, my collection of first edition toys, all the signed books I have, and my Firefly tattoo. I could tell you most of my favorite jokes are about grammar and I could tell you how high I scored on the SAT's and my GPA. But I don't have to do any of that, you know why?? Because I know what I am, and I AM proud of it, "cool" or not, it's who I am. Deal with it.
I love you. Seriously. I'm a nerd, a geek, and a total dork. Just because I can't quote Tolkein and didn't get Firefly the first time around (I'm swearing to try again, I promise - it was a horrible time in my life) and can't do math very well doesn't mean I'm not a massive nerd.
My nerd creds are just that, mine. Sure, I share an awful lot of with others, and that's a wonderful thing today. In fact, that we can argue about particular topics for hours makes things that much better. I can go from arguing Doctor Who companions to arguing quantum computing in under 45 seconds... and do so quite often. But it doesn't mean we agree either.
I'm lucky to have been a nerd for all of my 41 years. I make my living in computer engineering, I read quantum mechanic books for fun (and oh yeah, can't do a stitch of the math), my biggest crush in history is Isaac Newton. I collect all kinds of fandom stuff, my largest is probably Doctor Who, though Final Fantasy is a close second. And my video games are almost all in the RPG area - MUST HAVE STORY! Oh, and I go to at least one convention a year, I try for two, depending. I just spent 3 days at the Denver ComicCon and I'm *still* recovering.
What makes being nerdy so awesome is that we are all so unique and special. Nerd shaming is a thing, and I find it antithetical to who we are! Embrace your fellow nerd and you may find something new to love every day.0 -
AHHHHHHH! Both of these!
You know when you're a huge nerd when you were trying to figure out the math in the final episode of Silicon Valley - only to determine that it DID ACTUALLY WORK. /nospoiler.
And my latest current obsession is Supernatural (yea, I know I'm a decade behind)... and Halt & Catch Fire on AMC - because I was/am Cameron. I looked and was JUST like her in high school and got my first computing gig out right then too. Anyone I knew back then watching that show is really kinda creeped out. And oh yeah, Lee fricking Pace.0 -
I'm pretty sure our house has more bookshelves than I have pairs of shoes that I actually wear.
This! lol
Yes, this. After what I brought home a couple of weeks ago, I now need new bookshelves, that I have no more room for. I've started doublestacking books. >.< I'm *REALLY* in trouble the next time I move. So to prevent that idea, I have started designing built in bookshelves for my current place to see if my landlord will let me do it.0 -

You're not alone. I'm always behind on my tv show viewing. Only just now making my way through Battlestar Galactica0 -
In highschool, I was part of the elite group called the "nerdherd". We would all walk together to lunch and kids would say, "Here comes the nerdherd'. Back in the 80's it was considered bad to be a nerd. Looking back, I'm glad I missed out on what I thought I was missing out on.0
