wondering if some of us shouldn't email the race director of the race he's going to steal from. ;)

send me your email and I can forward your the race director's (Gerard) contact information. you're a very good hall monitor.

though, stealing from this charity is wrong. i'll make a donation on site for the entry fee, so I can get a tax deduction receipt, but still not registering...

anyone know of cat owner charity races to bandit?

    At least you admitted it.

You admit you're wrong ... yet insist on doing it. The words that best describe you are a violation of this site's guidelines.

To answer the original poster's question without making a moral judgment, I am a race timer and unless the timer is an idiot, the number will not wipe out the time from the previous event.

Timing systems are built to handle the runner crossing the line more than once. They understand that the first time the runner crosses is the "real" finish. Many runners return to cheer on their friends, etc. If we overwrote the runners' time every time that happened, we'd have a LOT of unhappy customers.

I have never crossed a finish line then returned to the race to cheer on my friends.

That's what the sidelines are for.
The timing system will often pick up your chip from the "sidelines." That is what I'm talking about. Happens all the time, you just don't know about it because your race timer took care of it.

so much hate for the race drop in. These things are expensive. I don't blame the guy for considering it. Have none of you ever seen two movies for the admission price of one?

Not unless that was part of my ticket price.

It isn't always an option here. There is one company that is available, they are not local and basically provide service for an enormous area. The cost involved to have them, if they are even available, is out of reach for almost all of the local races.
But we have found another option now but I would imagine we aren't the only area that faces this issue though.

Yep, that is why we started our timing company; our running group was constantly getting inquiries about timing companies; we'd refer them on and the companies were already booked up. So we figured there was a decent market for those services.

i retract.. let's go to court.. felon on the run...

are there any groups out there that would take a tax deductible donation in the amount of the entry fee in lieu of getting a bib, race result, tshirt, awards eligibility, etc?

    thanks for the info..

woow.. awesome replies. i never knew banditing a race had such a rebellious intrigue to it... now I am putting this on my rebel bucket list for a longer race. seems like just one of those acts of defiance that everyone needs to experience like sneaking into a movie theater/sporting event, jumping the fence around a goft course and playing holes 5-14. never got around to try ninja fishing but I would think i would end up falling in the water. what else is there fitness related?

Sneaking into a movie or jumping a fence WAS exciting... when I was 13!

If there is a chance you will throw off the timing, and you are willing to give the $34 to a charity separately, why don't you just pay for the race??? Use your rebellious spirit somewhere you are inconveniencing something other than a charity event...

the numbers are more interesting component.

as if anyone would have any hunch, but what are the average G&A markup that the organizers charge to cover logistics and overhead? ... still might make sense if we markup the donation at a % that this less that an individual's marginal tax rate.

it only seems like a big deal because people are complaining and bringing in opinions outside my questions about race operations, which is fine--replies are replies, and pages are pages.

thanks to those who share their experience and understanding of the behind the scenes.

yep.. cheap. can't even afford smart phone plan to take pictures of myself in the mirror.

I am running in the Huntington Beach Big 8K on Sunday and the wife is running in the 2K with dog. I didn't realize that the starts are 2 hours are apart, so I want to run with my wife and dog in the 2K, but I don't want to pay a 2nd entry fee for the 2K because I am cheap and race entries are starting to pile up. If I run with my bib from the 8K, will this overwrite my 8K results. Or is it better to just take the bib off. I figure its such a big event, I can just join the crowd because I don't care about being timed in the 2K.

Feel free to not answer the question also and post unsolicited judgements. forums work well that way

I have no idea what the chip will do, I didn’t even know that they existed until I read this thread.
I understand what you want to do, you just want to run with your wife and dog, I get that, but unfortunately because of this particular race it’s much more than that. What you’re doing is stealing from the charity which has been outlined here already but the more embarrassing thing is that you’re essentially thumbing your nose at the men who gave up their health and wellbeing and even their lives. They did these things because they felt that they were doing the right thing, whether you agree with that or not their sacrifice remains.

So what you’ve done is show the world who you are and shown them the type of person you are, you’re shown that running a little over a mile with your wife and a dog has more value than those who gave up everything for all of us, all of this was given up for the grand total of $34.00.
So stay behind your monitor and continue your self-serving, smug ,self-righteous and pompous attitude and hope that those of us who had friends in the service who came home without limbs or didn’t come home at all might not have the opportunity to introduce ourselves to you.

Your questions about race operations revealed a lack of decency and honor that is truly disturbing.

If you don't know any wounded or killed military members, consider yourself lucky.

    ^this

If you're going to bandit a race (and I'm not saying you should...ever), at least have the decency to pick a for-profit race so you can pretend like you're sticking it to the man as some kind of vigilante anti-capitalism protest. It's still wrong, but you're likely to find a little more support for that.

    Some people have no morals.

OP should be on Superscrimpers "my top tip is to steal from charities, they never expect it".

AGREED. If you can't afford something-- Guess what? You don't get it. That's incredibly scuzzy, I can't imagine the ability to steal sans remorse.

If you're so cheap, why not do the Cypress City 5/10k? Its the same weekend, not far away, and half the price (25$ for 5k, 35$ for 10k). You and your wife could have both run for the cost of your entry to the 8k. Or, you could jog with your wife and dog any normal time for free. No worries about chips, no stealing from veterans, no announcing to the world what a complete and utter douche-tool you are. Win-win!

I quite understand the attraction behind trying to get a race for free (I'm not sure about your general races but the Spartan races I have entered into have cost me a good bit of dough, not counting driving to them or hotels), but I'm with most of the others here.. I see it as a frowned upon thing.

Attacks people with personal pics......and now the butt-hurt comes out.

No matter how you play it, you aren't going to be able to justify banditing a charity race benefiting families of lost veterans.

Being "cheap" or "poor" in absolutely no way justifies stealing.

Man, I didn't think this thread could get worse.

Some people aren't just horrible, but revel in it. If I was his kin I'd be ashamed to share the same blood.

    A charity thief. How pitiable.

Take the veteran component out, he's still planning to steal from a charity that helps the families of dead people.

Actually am registered for the Cypress 10K

Obviously frowned up. I've learn to plan races well in advance to get the early bird savings and walk or mail-in the registration to avoid online registration fees.

Also shopping for smaller size (medium) close clothes at thrift stores has help, but still run in my XXL shirts sometimes as a reminder of why I run.

Stealing from a charity that supports the people who defend your rights to be a d-bag is utterly deplorable!
You sir have no respect for yourself or our great country.
