Extreme Weight Loss Blass

Gosh I watch ABC's Extreme Weight Loss and the people are working out like crazy losing pounds after pounds well a total of about 150 lbs in one year! Yea right why don't they show the food intake? Three years ago I lost 27 lbs in one month eating 600 calories per day and working out 2 hours everyday but gained it all back. I now work out 1/2 hour to 1 hour per day 5 days a week and eat 1,200 calories per day or under and guess what it ain't working. Is the answer 600 calories per day? Is it working out all day and not eating at all like Extreme Weight Loss show does, LOL . Or is it just keep logging in and I will see the lbs come off in 2 to 3 years like most people.

I really think those shows do a disservice to normal people who don't have access to a staff of health experts and the time to put aside hours a day to work out. Unless you have a pressing health issue that forces you to need to lose large amounts of fat quickly, half a pound to a pound and a half a week is plenty. And no, 600 calories and running yourself into the ground is not the answer, unless the question is how do I ruin my metabolism and maybe kill myself.

Are you eating back your exercise calories? If you have 80 pounds to lose, 1200 calories minus the ones you burn might not be enough.

The food intake is the boring part, unless the person is falling off of their plan and is sneaking food they aren't supposed to have like last week. If you really want to know what they eat Chris Powell has a book about carb cycling that I think they follow on the show.. Just don't expect the rapid weight loss like they did since you have a lot less to lose then they do. Set a reasonable goal and be patient about it.

I also watched the show and thought how do they do that so i bought the book, read it and sent a copy to my sister. I've lost 58lbs since jan and she has lost 116lbs since sept 2013. I eat between 1200 - 1500 calories a day and 2400 once a week, work out most days doing lots of strength training.

Good lord 600/day no, that is not the way to do it. Even 1200 is probably too low unless you don't care about doing it in a healthy manner. If you just want to lose weight at all costs then go for it but to do it in a healthy manner you need to first know what your TDEE then cut that by 15-20%.

I started eating 1000 to 1200 calories a day April of 2013 and by May 2014 I have lost a little over 130 pounds. I work out about 45 minutes 3 times a week. The doctor has me on maintenance now and I am scheduled for plastic surgery to get rid of all of this excess skin.

I watch the show and think it does give some people unrealistic goals when they see people losing 150# in a year, but then again, I lost 130 pounds in 13 months while eating healthy at 1500-1750 calories a day, working out for an hour our so 5 days a week and working a full time job and living my life. So, it is doable, if you have a large amount of weight to lose.

I do wonder how much weight they lose when they have the skin removal surgery, it would be nice to have someone pay for that at the end of the weight loss.

I've never watched the ABC extreme weight loss show, but I do watch The Biggest Loser.

I'm not advocating this diet, I'm just stating what I've seen on the show.

On The Biggest Loser, they are supposed to eat 1200 - 1500 a day for women and 1500 - 1800 a day for the men (Jillian said that in one season). They have other "rules" that they're supposed to stick to as well, like no carbs after a certain time of day and no added sugar, etc. I have read the infamous Kai article where she stated that they are eating ridiculously small amounts, but from what I see on the show, Bob and Jillian yell at them when they don't eat enough. You hear at least once a season "You have to eat to lose weight" from Jillian. I know that the story might be different when the cameras are off, but that's at least what they are saying when the cameras are on.

That amount of deficit from people of their size will help them lose weight even if they didn't exercise. Now add the 6+ hours of exercise that they do everyday (and they don't eat back calories), they are creating huge deficits. Huge.

It's not recommended for people who are not under a doctor's care. It's probably not safe even if you were under a doctor's care. Just look at the number of injuries on the show. Those injuries are because they are pushing themselves too hard and aren't fueling their bodies properly. It's dangerous. Don't try to be like them.

Basically, moral of the story, its a tv show. There are a lot of things that happen when the cameras are off that you don't know about. Don't try to duplicate it at home. Follow MFPs calorie limits it gives you and eat back at least half of your exercise calories. Losing weight slowly is the best for you.

I am in the process of getting rid of skin now. My plastic surgeon told me he will get at least 20lbs off me. As far as the cost it is around 24000.00 for all 3 surgeries. I am getting arms and boobs, upper thighs, and all the way round tummy tuck and butt lift.

Ill add to the Biggest Loser info. I heard a contestant ask if a fellow contestant had reached her 6000 calorie burn according to their bodybugg band....Ill admit, I tried to reach that a few times. Made it to just over 4000 and was stinkin exhausted and completely obliterated for more than a day. 3500 burned is about my max that leaves me functional lol.

I do watch the show but I had never seen it until a few weeks ago (and is now my fav show) I lost 156lbs in 1 year, took me another 2 months to hit my goal of 173lbs lost. So it is VERY possible with healthy eating and lots of exercise and determination. That's kind of fcked up of you to say "I don't have access to their health experts" what you don't have is their / my determination, drive dedication, focus ect ect don't take away from what others can do just cause you haven't put in the effort yet.

(for the ticker police, I just finished a 10 month bulk 3 weeks ago)

    End rant

    OP
If your not losing weight your not trying hard enough or your not actually tacking what you are eating, try harder if you only have 30 mins to do cardio then make every minute count and get off the machine or walk in the house dripping with sweat. Learn new exercises and maybe focus on full body exercises.

In the beginning of the episode they do a 5 minute segment explaining the person will be eating 1,500 calories per day and get a quick cooking lesson from Rocco Dispirito. Yes, I think they should spend more time on nutrition.

Yes, in this week's episode, towards the beginning Chris explains that the lady (weighing around 300 pounds) would be eating a 1500 calorie a day diet and working out 2 hours a day with the trainers.

I think they spend more than 2 hours/day working out, I just think that woman got 2 hours with Chris and Heidi that day (and then had hours on her own and/or with other trainers). When they go home, I think they're on 4 hours of exercise per day. They live at that Anschutz center the first 3 months and are closely supervised so it might be more then.

They are good examples of netting negative thousands of calories-- probably 3500+ per day the first 3 months. They always lose 90 or more lbs. in the first 90 days, or aim to and get close.

Watched it last night, was so pleased for the guy that lost the weight, shame the women couldn't stick to it, gets me mad because there are loads of people out there who would love that chance.

These people exercise literally hours a day during the first three months while at bootcamp. Both their health and food intake is monitored during this time. It's not crazy that a person who is about 200 lbs overweight could drop about 100 pounds in three months by doing this. Why do you think the goals during the second and third phases are much less? It's not just because now they have less weight to lose, but it's also because they're balancing going back to work and cooking their own food and finding the time to exercise.

You just have to be honest with the amount of calories you're eating and the amount of calories you're burning from exercise. It will come off and yes, it will come off slower than the people on tv, that's completely true, but that's only because you don't have months to devote solely to your weight loss.

I only enjoy those shows for like the first episode or 2 where they make them exercise until they throw up and the rest of America gets its jollies watching fat people be exploited.

I usually eat ice cream while watching.

Ya, it's not 2hrs per day....

The gal on last night said she's "meeting her diet and getting in her 4hrs of exercise per day" while at home. I have no idea why I watch that show..... When trainer guy said he gives himself a "cheat day" every week that is usually a handful of tortilla chips or something my jaw about hit the floor.

It's funny-- They teased it as if he'd be the fired one but as soon as we met him in his intro I knew he'd be the success story. You could tell he had it in him.

Yeah, it's not common in workouts on this show. Though Chris kind of faked some gagging when he did his little McDonalds meal eating demo.

And this show does some visual exploitation as well. I'm convinced they make the women wear $5 Walmart sports bras or something because they always look like they're going to get a black eye.

Oh god, I remember that one! All I could think about when I watched him eat that McDonalds was that I could seriously go for a quarter pounder.

And I agree. It's hard to get away from any kind of exploitation when it comes to fitness shows, but I still much prefer this one compared to The Biggest Loser since they seem to have some sort of psychological training because they also emphasize that the person has to deal with the reasons why they gained all of that excess weight.
