What are those bands, and what are they used for?

You can still train your legs, you might even be able to squat if you change your form. If you assume a wider stance and sit back further so that you can maintain shins that are perpendicular to the floor you will decrease the amount of force applied by the patellar tendon and the severity of the angle produced in the knee as a whole which would make it less painful to squat. A good way to learn to squat like this is to do box squats but put the box a little bit too far behind you so that you really have to reach back to get to it and then stand by flexing your glutes and hamstrings and driving your hips forward rather than trying to straighten at the knee.

Can you show that position in the squat? I'm curious if that will help my left knee.

My Anytime Fitness doesn't doesn't have an appropriate box. We have a high box, I mean a really high box if I want to use that. But for now, this is the only gymnasium wise.
Do they have those lego step platforms for the aerobics classes?

BUMP for later when MAN is off work and can read through, he has this condition and there are a few compound movements that really effect his knees.

Suppose I could elevate to an appropriate level, however, not sure if is to wide to fit within the power rack, but I'll give it a try.

Its a compression strap designed for the patella tendon if I am not mistaken. You can find them at Sports Authority for about $10 USD.

When I squat, the analogy I always think of to keep proper form is sitting down on a toilet

I think that helps with getting your butt back where it needs to go.

I'm teaching my daughter to squat at the gym (she's 15), and the other day I kept telling her "like you're going to the bathroom, like you're going to the bathroom"

    Update:

For anyone finding this thread in the future with a similar issue as to mine, usmcmp recommendation of a patella knee brace was the solution to my knee pain. Finally had a chance to pick one up and wear it for the first time for yesterdays leg session.

The brace minimized to the pain to nonexistence. I didn't alter my form (because that was not the issue) and just added the brace.

    Thanks again usmcmp!

Thanks for the update, glad to hear it helped! Would you happen to know where to find such a thing or should I simply look on amazon and order one in?

my son has the same and was diagnosed in middle school...he has to squat a lot for his job (welder)...he hasn't complained yet...give him time...the only time he "cries" out is when he knocks it...asically letting your butt "rub" the box as you go down...
Let's hope not when he reaches my tender age of 43 and counting.
As for the box squats just don't "sit" on the box...use it as a guide...just basically letting your butt "rub" the box as you go down...
Yes, but with the box, touching it briefly with your butt, still stops your squat from going from below parallel. Just seems like a cheat to me.

I was taught just the opposite. Sit, pause, then explode up from the bottom.

Glad that I could help! I'm also happy that it was a fairly inexpensive fix for you.

    Hey no problem.

Just picked mine up at Sports Authority because I wanted to try it on there to make sure if fit around my boney-*kitten* knee. It was under twenty dollars.
