"And the Mountains Echoed"
If you're in the mood for scary, "Pen Pal" scared me to death and was a page turner.
"The Wool Omnibus" was a dystopian nightmare (in a good way)0 -
Not to go too off-topic, but is there a way to "bookmark" a thread on this site so I can go back to it later? I'm often looking for good book recommendations, but I currently have a newborn so I haven't been reading as much lately. Hope to get back to it soon!0

Eye of the World by Robert Jordan
PS. I am going to plug Goodreads here. They do a pretty good job of recommendations if you have your reading history in there.0 -
Plainsong (Kent Heruf)
Parable of the Sower (Octavia Butler)
Oryx and Crake (Margaret Atwood)
Ready Player One (if you're a bit of an 80s geek)

I know a lot of people use goodreads.com
Another idea, which I love, is using Pinterest...I have a board for each year starting with 2012 and pin everything I read with 1-5 star ratings, it is fun to look back on and refer to for friends and whatever...also I have a "secret" Pinterest board with books I plan to read or what's been recommended to me lately.
Hope this helps!0 -
Gone Girl....first time in a long time I got to the end of a book and was dumbfounded by all the twists and the ending.0

I'm terrible with titles but anything by Stephen King or John Irving. I will second Gone Girl - it was a great read. The Outlander series is awesome (Diana Gabaldon)....so many books to read....0
-
Game of Thrones series (A Song of Ice and Fire)
^This.
I'm in the middle of book three now and it's seriously addicting.0 -
The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell refuses to leave me alone every time I read it.
I also second pretty much everything abyt42 suggested!0 -
bump for book ideas... I'm always open for new ones to read0

East of Eden. You have to muscle through the first chapter but after that, it's among the more profound books I have read to date. Periodic but timeless.0

Inferno by Dan Brown0

Check out The Game by Terry Schott. About people living in a VR world, aware when they go in, and while they are "playing the game", they are born, live and die there and come back to the real world. It was free for my Nook. The Fault in Our Stars was great. I really enjoyed The Host by Stephanie Myer as well.0
-
Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson...excellent!0
-
Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. Funny, thought provoking and really long. :happy:0
-
I didn't know that they wrote a book about me....LOL
The Invisible Man H.G. Wells0 -
Non fiction:
The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand
Sex and the Second City by Karen Abbott
The War That Ended Peace: The Road to 1914 by Margaret MacMillan
Fiction:
The Time in Between by Maria Duenas
The Arsonist by Sue Miller
There are more but I am too tired to remember0 -
Anything by P.D James for a murder mystery, Maeve Binchy for people stories, Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman for fantasy sci-fi awesomeness.0
-
If you like historical fiction I can heartily recommend any of Bernard Cromwell's books, his Saxon Chronicles are fantastic .0
