Fat people ignored by grocery store, free sample people?

Have you ever been ignored by the "Free sample people" at the grocery store or farmers market because you're obviously way overweight? I've been noticing that for several years now. Everybody else gets the kettle corn, but they look right through the fat people. Or how about the carving station at a buffet, Again everyone else gets a fair amount of the prime rib, but they want to give overweight people a child's portion, and then just stare at you, as if they want to tell you something. I don't want their stinking samples anymore anyway, and I've always detested all you can eat buffets. I'm just making an observation. Prejudice/ discrimination, hatred against obese people is very obvious in our society. What's your opinion?

No, I can't remember ever feeling discriminated against at the sample stations at Costco, and I have the opposite problem at buffets where they carve the meat--they usually serve me and others too much. ;)

I do see far too much body shaming--

What scares me is the degree to which we often internalize these negative messages rather than speaking out against the *kitten* drippings who propagate them. When they look through you, do you speak up about it?

PS - As a chef, I hope you strive to provide your guests with healthy options. :)

I'v never been way overweight but I've been ignored by them as well. I've noticed that a lot of them (my mom used to work as one) only offer to about half of the people as they don't want to bother every single person that walks past them. Often times enough people wander over that they don't NEED to ask anybody at all. Perhaps it's different where you are, or perhaps you're assuming it's because you're overweight when, in fact, it has nothing to do with you or your weight at all. Not that I'm there with you to make your observations, but as people, we often make the assumption that the reason behind things is something personal, when it typically is not. Most people in the world don't notice most other people in the world.

My last business was a semi-vegetarian/organic food restaurant for that reason. I gained a lot of weight after I sold it, but am back on track. Also in fine dining establishments, where I've made my career for the past 25 yrs, healthy options are always available, and vegetarians are always accommodated also. That's what affluent guests pay for, having their individual needs met.

the point in giving out free samples is to encourage someone to buy the product, so i don't see why ignoring large people would accomplish that goal, in anyones mind.

When I was more obese I felt I had the opposite problem. Like, when I went to the farmers' market, all the food truck people selling pastries and fancy sausages and cheese would seriously ramp up their patter or just directly address me ("Hey, ma'am? Ma'am! FREE SAMPLES!") when I started walking by, like they were thinking "Oh, SHE looks like a potentially great customer!"

I'm sure it depends on the situation, and I'm also sure a lot of it (but not all of it) is in our heads.

I don't know if they ignore me or not, I usually try to ignore them first!
It's a rare occurrence that I'm going to have any interest in any of their samples anyway, and have you seen some of the people tasked with giving away the samples? Yikes!

I can't help wondering why you are equating vegetarianism and organic foods with weight loss? A calorie deficit is what matters. Obviously you are doing something right, looking at your ticker.

We/I wasn't, the lady asked me If I provided healthy options for my guests, it wasn't about weight loss.

Most people are paid by the hour and don't care if they sell anything, just being ignorant and showing their disapproval of someone's appearance is the reason

I haven't had a problem either way most of the time. I pretty consistently go to the same stores or places to eat so they know me.

When I was overweight, I had the exact opposite experience.

People seemed to chase me down to offer me food.

....I'm not overweight and the sample people never even talk to me. I try to avoid them, avoid all eye contact and they avoid me. Win for me, loss for them because I'm not falling for their tricks and wasting my money on something I don't need.

My experience has also been that because I'm heavy they assume I'll want something, especially when it comes to the treats.
