Why does silence hurt

  • I am one of those people who needs to be alone to get over things.

No it is not passive aggressive behavior. It is Leave Me The Hell Alone behavior.

    No they are not childish.

YOU need to give them space so they can get over it. If you cannot respect their process, why should they respect yours?

Some people need space after conflict. Others need to talk things through. There's nothing wrong with either approach, but when you're in a relationship with someone you should know which type they are so you can give them what they need.

Or they may be done with the relationship, and that's their call.

Whatever the case, continuing to contact them when they've made it clear they don't want to talk isn't going to help.

It appears the op gets it.

But, just adding sometimes people are silent because they don't want to say something in anger that will make things worse.

My best friend and I routinely go through periods of not talking for weeks because we're both adults with lives that don't include each other every second of the day. If we have an argument, if we have those moments of silence, it's usually nothing, but I project my own feelings into the situation. It's NEVER as bad as I feel it is, and I know to take a step back and not project how I feel on how she may feel.

Friendships get harder and harder in some ways as you age, and easier in others. Just keep in mind that just because you feel ignored, doesn't mean you actually are being ignored. Or, some people need space. I know it can hurt, and it's hard to not jump to conclusions about it, but try not to and you'll be happier, and your relationships will get better.

If you click the arrow next to the person's name you can choose to "Ignore User." They can still answer your threads but you won't see their responses.
