Whiskey Lullaby... a little cheesy but strikes a personal note with me.

My first thought as well. But I think a lot of that is just how well done the video was. I have to go one of those from that weird period in the early 70s where they married upbeat melodies with truly depressing lyrics. Seasons in the Sun and Blind Man in the Bleachers are close, but this... Jesus...

My mom still plays this on vinyl.

well, saddest in respects to the lyrics and message, there's a plethora of country songs that do the trick... many of which are already named here...

but -the- song that stirs up the most emotion in me is VAST - Flames. the music and words always made me a little weepy (along with many other Jon Crosby songs) , but now that it ties into a specific time in my life and my memories of a certain someone, it turns me into an absolute mess when i listen to it. And I can never stop myself.

That stupid Happy song? Whenever I hear it I get decidedly un-happy.

Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth...

Okay, seriously, "Lightning Crashes." Every time I hear it I want to jab myself with a used needle

It's ironic you said that song. I don't think about it often, but it breaks my heart. I don't know if any of you are old *kitten* like me, but we had this thing called "Channel One" that came on every morning in high school at the end of first period. I'll never forget, there were announcements one morning in May, and the last announcement was that one of my friends had passed away. She was 18 years old, and dead of a drug overdose. Immediately after that announcement Channel One came on, and Lightning Crashes was playing. I remember sitting in French II crying, thinking what a waste it was that such a beautiful soul was gone so young. Next year, it will be 20 years, and I'm still haunted by her death.
