Wayne Cochran, Joe Carpenter, Randall Hoyal & Bobby McGlon (1961) - Last kiss

The singer borrows his father's car to take his beloved sweetheart out on a romantic date (on a rainy night). Coming across a stalled car in the road the singer swerves to the right to avoid it, losing control and crashing violently in the process. The crash renders both the singer and his girlfriend unconscious. The singer later regains consciousness and finds several people at the scene of the accident, but was able to find his girlfriend, still lying unconscious. When the singer cradles his girlfriend lovingly in his arms, she regains partial consciousness, smiling and asking the singer to "hold me, darling, just a little while." The singer then gives his sweetheart what would be their "last romantic kiss" as she fades into death and enters the afterlife.

The Johnny Cash version of Hurt
and if we're mentioning Johnny Cash, I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry. Particularly the version on American IV.

Lyrically: Ne Me Quitte Pas and Strange Fruit, both of which I prefer the Nina Simone versions.

Emotionally: Don't Fear the Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult. I won't give too much away in case there are other OITNB fans who haven't seen all of the episodes yet, but that song does play during one particular scene and it struck a nerve with me because it paralleled something that was actually going on in my life (and still is). It was very overwhelming and so whenever I hear it I can't help but cry.

Hurt Johnny cash sounds like his last breath is coming out with each lyric

I agree this is the song I use to help my tears fall. He did the best cover, his heart and soul were in each lyric. RIP <3

Arms of the Angel by Sarah McLachlan. I have worked in animal rescue for many years. I've seen a lot of bad and a lot of good, but much of the bad stays with me. Those are the kind of things I won't ever forget. I literally cannot listen to this song without crying my eyes out because it was on the ASPCA commercial. In actuality, it's about drug use, but it's tied to suffering animals in that commercial, so that's what it reminds me of. :(

Wow, I didn't realize how many sad songs are out there when I started this thread. It brought back memories too. Back when I was in grade school, it was the in thing to cry over Seasons in the Sun, as well as Billy, Don't Be a Hero.

Sharing this one because it's an Americana band most of you have probably never heard of...

"Ghost" as performed by Red Molly; written by Mark Erelli.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNyz8j-rudY

    "I need you the most
    When you're not around
I'm in love with your ghost
    You're invisible now
    I know that it's wrong
To keep holding on to something you can't even see"

Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead has made me sob more times than I care to admit

Same goes for No Surprises, also by Radiohead

And I don't even listen to Seasons of Love (525,600 Minutes) from the RENT soundtrack anymore, it's too hard. My sister's fiance was killed in a car accident at the age of 26 and they played it at his memorial service because he loved that show and that song. I guess it's a song with a positive message but because of what I associate it with it's really sad.

Mark Schultz - He's My Son

    "
Sometimes late at night I watch him sleep,
I dream of the boy he'd like to be.
I try to be strong and see him through,
But God, who he needs right now is You.
    Let him grow old,
    Live life without this fear.
    What would I be
    Living without him here?
    He's so tired,
    And he's scared
Let him know that You're there.
    Can You hear me?
    Am I getting through tonight?
    Can You see him?
Can You make him feel all right?
    If You can hear me
Let me take his place some how.
See, he's not just anyone, he's my son. "
