I need to start using Untappd again. I drank a He'Brew Death of a Contract Brewer, and it made me so sad that every time I click on the app, I see this glaring lack of judgment shaming me and I close the app.0 -

Never tried them, but they sound good! I made an IPA recently with Calypso, Citra and Cascade. Called it Islands IPA as it was very tropical.0 -

I don't think beer with pumpkin, chocolate, vanilla, coffee, whatever is necessarily 'gimmicky'. I think it's different and gives brewers a chance to experiment with different ingredients. Some of them I love, some of them I hate. I approach all of them with an open mind.
That said - I like a lot of different beers. From Gose to Hefeweizen to Barrel-Aged Stout, there is usually something in every style that appeals to my palate. Generally, a couple of your favorites (pales and pilsners), I find sort of boring and rarely find ones I want to drink. My palate leans more toward roastier/maltier brews. That's just my personal taste preference.
Beer has been around for a long time and has been brewed in many different ways over its history. Ever had a Gruit? It's beer bittered and preserved without any hops at all. Hops weren't even widely used in beer production until relatively recently in beer's history. For 8,000 years, beer was primarily made with fruits and spices. Hops have really only been widely used in beer for the past 200 years. So, defining beer by the prevalent taste of hops isn't really fair.
So, I posit that BEER is still BEER even if it's made with ingredients you don't believe to be worthy of being labeled beer.
And I hope you will take this for the good-natured jab it's intended to be... you think SHOCK TOP is a good example of fruit beer innovation? You need to turn in your craft beer membership card immediately. :laugh:0 -

I'm cheap and lazy... so I stick with bud light.
Otherwise, I'll drink whatever fru-fru "girly" drink tastes good... if I'm going to drink for flavor, I'll go for something that tastes like a dessert over a beer if I'm at a bar or dinner.
If I'm at home and working on something, beer it is most of the time.0 -
I love great beer (craft beer). I also love a cold Coors on a hot day or at a dive bar. When it comes to "gimmicky beers" as you call them, I like to try anything. Generally they are not my favorite, but I view it how I view food...people have to experiement and try new things to find the really great new combos...no reason in my book a gimmicky beer couldn't be that thing. In the US, it is our tradition to challenge beer with adjuncts etc. to create a unique flavor experience. Sometimes that's going to be a win and sometimes it's going to be a lose but I'm going to try it and make up my own mind :-)
I also really appreicate the more "gimmicky" from the stand point that people that think they only like miller light seem more up for trying these beers. They are gateway beers in a way. Things that get people excited about "real beer" and help them cross over into the realm of the beer enthusist. :-)0 -

I have yet to acquire a taste for craft beers. I usually just stick to silver bullets. But I've found myself more inclined to drink hard ciders lately.

I know if you go looking you can find beer that costs as much as good wine. I'm just talking picking up a sixer and it costing $25.

I like this topic. I don't drink now but I liked beer. When I drank it, I liked the lagers, darks, crafty, good beers.
I just didn't understand the Coors Lites, the Budweisers (don't get me wrong; I used to drink Bud until it just tasted like ****e to me one day.), the Millers, but back to the Coors. It;s like water.
I just did not like crap beer. Honestly, I once had Modelo Negro about 10 years ago when it was a lot cheaper and I found it to be quite pleasant. Of course, it was imported.
Yeah, most of the big name beers just stink.0 -

I don't think Shock Top is good fruit innovation. Typically, I don't like fruit flavors in beer. I think it's something my palette tolerates (and my wife buys it), especially in warm weather. Ditto for the apricot hefe.0 -

I just posted this on Yelp to get people's opinions. I was curious for some of my MFP home-skillets to sound off.
Please, let me say right now, I know I'm being an opinionated jerk. I am fairly certain the first 72 reactions will be, "why do you care about what other people like," or, "none of your darn business," or, "I am so tired of people judging others based on their opinions," and many other gems. I know (as I state in the yelp post) that I'm being knit-picky and kind of a jerk. But don't hate me because I want to hear your opinion on the topic. I just want to hear other folks' reactions because I'm curious... and a judgmental a-hole.
"I constantly feel like an a-hole when I post and this post is no different, in that respect. So, here I go again with my pretentious opinions. I'll say in-advance, it's okay for people to have different opinions than myself and I know I'm being ridiculous and a-holey, knit-picky, downright curmudgeonly, etc.
I DO NOT understand most people's taste in beer. I love me some craft beer. Like, to an unhealthy degree. When people ask what I like, I have a hard time and reply "good beer," because I'm not after anything specific (e.g. I'm not just an IPA drinker or something). I typically like IPAs, reds, pales, lagers and pilsners; however, they are amazing stouts, porters, sours / lambics, saisons, Belgians (although, I typically hate their fruitiness), doubles, imperials, oaked, aged, etc.
What I DO NOT understand, is how many people drink (what I consider to be) gimmicky crap. There are a slew of people out there who LOVE: vanilla, chocolate or caramel beers (way beyond minor notes of chocolate, but I mean CHOCOLATE), bacon maple donut stouts, oyster liquor porters, pumpkin ales, jalapeno lagers, etc. To me, it begs the question: do you actually like beer? In the coffee world, it'd be like someone saying: "I just love coffee, especially mocha frappuccinos, pumpkin spice lattes, and salted caramel drinks." You don't like coffee, you like flavored syrups and whipped cream with subtle notes of coffee.
In terms of beer, I'm all for innovation (ryePAs, black IPAs, LPAs, maybe even beer with a hint of fruit, such as shock top or pyramid's apricot hefe), as long as it's still recognizable as beer.
Anyway, you already know what a jerk I am. Sound off! Are gimmicky beer drinkers real beer drinkers? Or are they to be guilted by a-holes like me on Yelp?"
