Carb-blocking Products : Are they effective?

Hey guys, I've been hearing a lot about these carb-blocking iced teas and capsules (Ex: Carbtrim) that I think are really great to use on "feast" days where you are expecting to eat a lot.
Has anybody here tried it? Is it really effective? Please let me know.

I know nothing about the products, except can you imagine the side effects? Any residual carbs that make it to your large intestines, and the bacteria will have a feasting frenzy! (Lots and lots of methane gas as a by-product).0

Save your money, it's another weight loss gimmick that won't work. Holy cow, I just can't believe that people buy into this snake oil garbage.0
-
I've never tried them, but I'd just eat less carbs on my "FEAST" day and do more exercise the morning before your feast and after the feast to burn some of those carbs off.0

I've tried a couple of different brands in the early days of dieting. THEY DON'T WORK.
All those dr.oz-ish supplements are largely undocumented, easy profit for companies that speculate on people like us wanting an easy way out, in my opinion.
Seeing those pills that claim to "reduce belly fat", really makes me laugh.
It's probably a better investment buying an accurate food scale or a new pair of Nike's
What has worked for me then and now is to take natural fiber supplements before eating, 20-30 g daily.0 -
Nope, does not work, don't waste your money. Anything that claims to block carbs, calories, or fat.... sorry dude it's a lie. Caveat emptor and all that.0

There is one carb blocking product that works as advertised:

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.0

Just bought a Carbtrim box with 6 sachets of iced tea. I'll try it out this weekend on an out of town trip.0

lol, yeah, the comments made me even more curious.0 -
If you eat food your body uses it or stores it as fat.
NOTHING will stop that. Overeat and create adipose tissue. Every single calorie0 -
If they did actually work - then they would be classed as medicines - so you wouldn't be able to buy them!0

I am almost afraid to ask but... how would one tell if they "worked" or not?0
-
When I think of a carb blocker, I imagine a friend who smacks the donut out of my hand just before I get it to my mouth.
If that actually happened, I would be furious, by the way.
But about those carb blockers: Sounds awfully gimmicky and like a waste of your money. If you're going to have a high calorie day, just log it and move on.0 -

From what's been said, it sounds like you're gonna know when those rejected, angry carbs finally make their way out. The horror.0 -

There are pills that "block" fat. Well, I say block, they remove a % of fat from whatever you have eaten and you pass it as an orange liquid/oil the following day. In Britain they're called "Orlistat" or "Xenical" the high street name for it (the over the counter kind) is called "Alli"
Definitely works, albeit in a gross kind of way!

White kidney bean extract is supposed to inhibit the actions of amylase which breaks complex carbs down into compounds which can then be processed into glucose. The story goes that, by stopping the initial breakdown of the complex carbs, further processing does not occur and the carbs are then treated as fibre. There are reports on the interweb of double-blind trials which allegedly showed some success.
White kidney bean extract is reported to have no effect on simple carb processing.
I tried eating white kidney beans in lieu of other food and then tried the extract capsules. Whether the extract does not work, my existing high-fibre diet, incorrect dosage or too many total carbs, I noticed no change in my weight or intenstinal activity.
What set me on the weight-loss-success trail is MFP. By logging everything I eat and by getting the true content of that food, I can accurately monitor my intake and make informed choices.0 -

I was going to bring this up...I have had some success maintaining weight loss with these products, but never lost weight on them.

never heard of them and sounds totally bunk ….why can't you eat carbs?0

Some of the diabetic pills do this (Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors). They inhibit the enzymes that process carbs. And the known side effects are gas, bloating & diarrhea. If you want less carbs inside your body then simply eat less. I will never dump into my mouth something which I simply want to come out on the other end after a few hours. And it never works that way. There is a rich microbiota living in our intestinal tacts to help with things that our body cannot do by itself. What reaches them (re)defines the balance of the eco-system there. I would prefer to keep it at a beneficial balance.0

My wife is always talking about this new product or that new product for weight loss. My response is always the same "If it really worked there would be no fat people in the United States". The only thing I have found that works is a Calorie Deficit period, regardless of how that is achieved. Myself I do it with excercise and eating healthier.0

your body needs carbs (fruits, veggies, whole grains) so how does a carb blocking pill know the difference from good and bad carbs? Like the other post said, if you want less carbs in your body eat less carbs. Quick fix pills come with long term side effects. I've tried them all and the only things that has given me positive results with no negative long term effects are eating healthy and exercise.
Good luck to you!0 -
Hi guys im back. I had an out of town trip last weekend and tried carbtrim while eating more than double of my daily calorie limit. I gained 4.2 lbs because of this. As i am trying to recover the gained weight last monday by meeting my calorie goal, i easily lost 2.2 lbs the following day. Then i worked out yesterday and did not have any deficit but still lost 2.2 lbs. that's 4.4lbs in 18hrs! I think this is good for recovering the weight gain from feast days. I will try this again next time and give you more feedback.0
-
That 4.2 lbs is water weight that you have now lost because you have gone back to regular eating! There is nothing magic about this! Your tea didn't do this you did by going back to a reasonable diet!0
