Eggs - what's so bad about a whole egg??

I so often see references to using egg whites or eggbeaters (don't know what they are, and I don't think I want to, I don't think they exist in Australia), and I'm really wondering why people are so freaked out about using a whole egg.
Is it the fat or cholesterol in it? Is it the calories? Is it one of those "things" that has just pervaded a whole society?
I really thought that the whole "eggs are bad for you" myth has been busted for years now, so I'm curious to know why so many people don't seem to want to go near an egg yolk - IMHO eggs are whole, natural and really quite good for you (in moderation of course!)

Cholesterol, probably. Egg yolks have both good and bad cholesterol. Plus the calories.
1 egg = 80 calories
2 egg whites = 34
For those counting calories, it's quite a worthy swap.0 -
I agree, I'm all about eating the whole thing. There's good stuff in that yolk!0

I agree with the other comment, there are also many different kinds of eggs, and apparently that makes a difference, a coworker gave me a few duck eggs to use for baking, but they have much higher calorie and cholesterol, than a normal chicken egg.0

It's funny that this topic came up. I saw on the news yesterday about new nutritional info for eggs. Here's a link.

Egg beaters are disgusting...you are right. Whole eggs are fine in moderation. People tend to eat less when eating eggs and take in less calories overall because they feel fuller when they eat whole eggs. I usually have two eggs over easy about every other day and my cholesterol is in the normal range.
Where are you in Australia. I was in Australia for business in 2008 and was in Melbourne, Adelaide, Elizabeth, and Sydney. Beautiful country with awesome people. Didn't meet one person who didn't have a kind word. Can't wait to go back on my own time next time.
Good luck...BTW, in the USA, some of us call eggs "Cackleberries"...have no idea why.0 -
It is the cholesterol and the overall calories from what I have read. The cholesterol more so as at least the Heart and Stroke foundation still is against whole eggs. I'm not an egg person myself, but when I do eat them, I eat all of them.0

Unless you have high cholesterol, there's nothing wrong with them. Egg whites are lower in calories, but they don't have all of the other good stuff that whole eggs have in them. And a drop of 50 calories isn't going to save your diet. For anyone who uses Egg whites, I am sure there are a lot of other choices you could make in your diet to save those 50 calories than switching from whole eggs to whites.0

For some it's cholesterol (though as I recall it's been shown that very little of the bad chol/good chol balance comes from what we eat - someone correct me if I'm wrong). For others I guess it's cals.
I love eggs - I eat the WHOLE baby chick, at least a couple times a week. Good protein and it's worth the cals, for me.0 -
Egg yolks contain vitamins and minerals, so eating whole eggs in moderation is healthy. And besides, the yolk is the yummy part!0

I also seem to remember that dietary cholesterol is not easily absorbed by our digestive tract. It is the fat and extra calories that are the problem for blood cholesterol. I have done a little searching for research papers about it online with little success as I always end up with press releases about how much cholesterol is in food and how we should avoid it because of that cholesterol without any reference to peer reviewed studies. I figure I will stick to eating an occasional whole egg and not worry about it. I log calories, not most of the other stuff. If my calories are under control, the rest (except sodium) seems to naturally fall into place.0 -
Nothing eat your whole eggs if it doesn't go over your fat intake. The cholesterol in eggs is not the one that goes in your blood.
Trust me, a lot of bodybuilders, or guys that hit the gym (like me) eat 2 or 3 whole eggs a day and here we all are...and pretty healthy too unless they're taking steroids 0)00 -
My nutritionist says as long as you don't have a cholesterol problem, eat the whole egg.0

I have also heard them called Hen Apples.0 -
i love eggs!!0

I like whole eggs and I eat them all the time.....usually 1 hardboiled everyday. But to change it up and keep my calories low which on some days I have to do I'll do the egg beaters and it's just nice to still be able to get the protein and the flavor but not all the calories.0
-
You can get egg whites in a carton from some supermarkets in Australia, as my friend uses them. Don't know why anyone would, though because all the taste is in the yoke.
GG0 -
I usually split the difference and combine a whole egg with 1-2 egg equivalents from the carton - either egg whites or egg beaters. Otherwise, I find the taste of straight egg whites/beaters too bland...and of course miss out on the nutrients in the yolk!0
-
I wouldn't say bad, but most of the calories, fat, and cholesterol are in the yolk, and the protein is in the white. Just eating the whites gets you more food, less calories, and more protein, so that's why I eat mostly whites. Sometimes I'll drop a yolk in the mix and scramble em all up. And personally I don't notice a difference in taste all that much unless you're going for sunny side up eggs, scrambled tastes the same to me.0

I second that! The yolk is my favourite. If I'm having a fried egg, I'll cut the yolk out and have that and leave most of the white behind. I know it's good for me but it just isn't delicious. Nothing beats toast or sausages dunked in egg yolk. Mmmms!0 -
I've been doing 1 whole egg and 2 egg whites every morning. It helps me get the protein in my breakfast up without adding too many calories, but I'd never give up the 1 whole egg. I love the taste, and the idea of eating a whole food, and I'm not too afraid of natural fats.0

The egg yolks raise your cholesterol thing was busted at least ayear if not more.
Eggs as a whole A. taste better, B. are more filling. I could eat 3 egg whites and not be half as full as if I ate 1 whole egg. Plus, I can hardboil an egg, cut it up and put it on my salad and I dont need dressing. IMO, eggs are amazing. After all, it is the incredible, edible egg!0 -

Me too. I usually have one whole egg and three whites in the morning. I treid to do all whites, but I love the yolk tooooo much.0 -
Thanks all, I'll stick with my while eggs for weekend breakfasts, but it's interesting to hear everyone's thoughts.
I've heard "cackleberries" before but not "hen apples", that's cute
I'm in Western Australia, although Melbourne and Sydney and Adelaide are great, you missed an aven better bit of Australia!0 -
I would never be able to bring myself to crack an egg and throw half of it away. I saw on TV yesterday, as well, that, according to the USDA, eggs in the US are healthier than they used to be. I don't know if that applies to eggs here in Canada or there in Australia, but they were saying one whole egg a day is fine.
I don't eat many eggs, but I won't be throwing out the yolks any time soon.0 -
I generally have an egg, whole, poached on Sunday's, can't imagine not having the whole egg, good for you! although never tried, nor want to have only egg whites!0

The absolutely horrendous conditions the chickens are kept in.0
-
I read somewhere that women who eat one whole egg a day (yolk and all) lose more weight than those who don't.0

Doing our bit to re-dress this, we have 3 chickens who eat like kings and have free reign of our back yard, in return we get at least 2 eggs a day0 -
WHOLE EGGS! WHOLE EGGS!
haha wait I thought this was a protest!
In all seriousness, I always eat the whole egg. I love the yolk part, it's so tasty!0 -
I eat 3 WHOLE eggs almost every morning. Its more filling that a lot of other things to have and I would be willing to run a few miles just for the yolks lol. I have it good because I get fresh eggs from my neighbor so they are free range grain fed eggs........even better. I can totally tell the difference between store bought and fresh from the coop eggs.0
