okay so it has been 2 and a half weeks since I have given up my 1 dollar Mcdonalds cokes and I am so craving one. I know how bad they are for me and thought I may treat myself once a month but maybe I should give them up for good. Anyone else giving up pop and struggling?

  • I cant give up fizzy drinks, I get such a massive craving! but instead I've swapped regular coke for coke zero which tastes EXACTLY the same and has 0 calories. I get my fizzy fix without the massive sugar intake :)

YES! I just gave up pop for Lent, and already it's killing me. Normally when i go to work I have a diet coke, and a couple bottles of water, but it's killing me when I'm there, knowing I can't have it! I have up everything but water for Lent. My only exception is going to be St. Patty's day! Lol.
  • My husband lost about 60 pounds a couple of years back, and he said the best thing he did was quit pop. It's not just the horrible amount of sugar in it, lack of nutrients as well, but it's that the carbonation also makes you feel really bloated and screws up digestion by having all the gas in your intestines. We have it every couple of months as a treat if we're out with someone, but we keep it to very rarely and don't keep it in the house.

My goal is to give up diet soda. But, I tried to go cold turkey and have been getting bad headaches. So... I am making sure I have a little coffee in the morning to get in the caffeine (to prevent major withdraws) and have drastically cut down on what I was drinking. I am having about 2 a week.
  • Gave up coke for two months and drank diet. Hated every one. Did not lose a pound because my body found other ways to get its sugar injection. Once I switched back and brought my frequency for coke under control, my weight loss resumed.

i gave up soda about 2 months ago and actually had my first sip the other day and i actually don't like the taste. It was really hard at first but I just kept a bottle of water with me at all times and anytime i craved it, i just chugged water. Its hard but well worth it...

I was a mountian dew addict !!! i drank bottles a day, some days a 2lt and a half......last year i started cutting wayyyyyyy back, just one now and then......i lost my first 25 pounds by cutting soda out and drinking water....now i am to the point i only drink water (except an occassional beverage) i realized i would rather have food instead of those empty calories. I have had two 8 oz sodas this YEAR.......and for an addict i say that is pretty good !!!! but i also know it is hard !!!!

I actually quit pop for good a few months back. I don't crave it as much now and I drink more water and tea. I also feel much better, too.

I gave up my diet coke a long time ago. The sodium in pop will keep you from loosing weight. Also my orthopedic surgeon said the phoshoric acid in dark pops remove calcium from the bones.

So when you are missing your coke, think of the good things, weight loss and healthy bones.

i gave them up on the 16th of Feb and have not had one since.....i wanted to totally detox off of aspertame for 30 days to see if i could tell a difference in how i feel. i have issues with doing things in moderation..ha! LOL! go figure. i think once i detox from my diet dr peppers for 30 days i will have one every now and then. suprisingly enough i have not croked without them. one day at a time. i think if you do them once a week or once a month it will be fine.

I did! Today has been a week and I couldn't be happier with my decision. I didn't even do it purposly a few days had gone by that I hadn't drank one, so then when I went to the grocery store I just didn't want to buy any. I've been sitting on my last few pounds for a couple of weeks so I'm trying to change things around a little and the one thing I hadn't given up yet was the soda, so what the hell, why not? I prefer water over anything now anyway. Good luck:flowerforyou:

P.s. Something that sort of helped me and I didn't even realize until looking back now is the diet seltzer water I was adding a few times a day to my lemon or lime water, I realize now that I missed the bubbles and that's really the only thing that turned me on to soda to begin with. After all those seltzer bubbles for a few weeks I'm all bubbled out and truthfully the thought of soda kind of makes my stomach sour now. I hope you find what works for you =) If your having troubles at first, maybe try the seltzer water (It's amazing in my wine too, 0cal's) and you only need a splash!

I gave it up 2 1/2 years ago. Have not had a drink of it since. Eventually the cravings will get easier.

Since I started MFP, I only have diet pop once a week or every other week when I eat out.

I suffered from the same thing about 7 years back and my dr. prescribed me caffeine pills:noway: it's terrible and those caffeine headaches are NO FUN! You have an addiction to caffeine and it goes away after a few weeks, when I ran out of my pills I just let it go, cold turkey, and I'd say about 3wks later the headaches were gone, then I got on another soda kick a little over a year ago now , happy I quit and no headaches this time, I sorta weaned myself off which I think is what was the biggest difference, and I'm never ever going back, thre's nothing good for you in soda, maybe try making some homemade ice'd tea and adding diet seltzer water to it. I know for me the biggest loss was the bubbles. Good luck!

    This is what I do.
When you are craving your soda, think about this...
A 12 oz. can of coca cola has 10 tsp of sugar in it
I took 10 sugar packets to work and put them on my desk (that's usually when I crave soda).
When I get a craving I take those 10 sugar packets out and look at them. My craving usually ends with a big cup of ice water.
    Good luck!
  • i have for the most part given up sodas , do have one occasionally , though did not do it for dieting, i just seem to get urinary issues if i drink to much sodas
  • I just started again few days ago. I quit cause, 1. I bloat and have bad gas and 2. My husband gets on me how it increases the chance of cancer 90% and I shouldn't put poison in my body, especially if I want to be around for my kids.

After reading how bad diet sodas are for us, I went from drinking them all day everyday to one glass at night with my snack. I replaced it with eight glasses of water per day and I've read water will help in reducing cellulite!!!!

I gave up pop...I would rather eat those calories plus I am totally addicted to sugar and just can't let myself have any. lol. I do make what we call juice pop, which is about a tbsp of frozen juice with some carbonated water. You get the fizz of water without so many calories. or you can get those water flavour packets that don't have calories and add it to the carbonated water.

I took all sugary beverages—including my beloved sweetened iced tea—out of my diet at the beginning of the year. I knew that drinking these things were not part a healthy a diet and not where I wanted to allot my calories. I have had one 8-ounce Coke since then. And while I am okay with an occasional dose of any kind of junk, I have no plans to make soda or sweet tea a regular part of my diet again.

I gave up pop on Jan 1st. I used to drink at least 4 cokes a day, I did a cleanse (Thysilin herbal cleanse) starting on Jan 3rd, and I think it really helped get me over the pop cravings. I haven't had a craving in over a month and a half and I feel a 100% better now that my body isnt hooked on all the crap in pop.

I went from a four can a day diet coke drinker down to about one soda a week. I haven't quit it entirely, because I do still honestly enjoy the flavor, but I decided that I should treat it just like other foods that I enjoy but that aren't nutritionally beneficial-- I have one every once in a while as a treat, but it is no longer a staple of my diet. Instead of drinking soda throughout the day, I'll just drink water, or make myself some herbal tea if I want something with flavor to it.

I've never been a regular soda drinker, but I do have one diet sprite every evening. It really fills me up and helps keep my evening "snacking" in check. So, nope! Not givin' it up!

I'm a huge diet coke junkie. I have tried to shake the habit for years unsuccessfully. However! I stopped drinking it for Lent on Wednesday and have yet to crave it. I am substituting it by drinking a lot more water, and (gasp) Crystal Lite. Maybe part of your cravings are just being thirsty? ...and can be satisfied by a healthier drink? Also, there is no diet coke in the house to tempt me. The latest news about caramel coloring in pops being carcinogenic is also a motivator. I've long ignored the bad news about artificial sweeteners but I just might be ready to listen now. Fingers crossed. Hang in there! Don't give in to the temptation. The longer you hold out the more it will become a thing of the past.

Maybe someday I will be willing to give up my Diet Mountain Dew. Someday, just not today.

I gave up diet sodas over a month ago. I quit cold turkey and I haven't had ANY side effects from it....I was drinking 6-8 cans a day!!!! One of the best things you can do to help is take an epsom salt/baking soda bath. I will help to pull toxins from your body since aspartame (artificial sweetener) is actually a toxin absorbed into your tissues. I do this weekly.....aspartame withdrawals and side effects can occur for months after giving it up. You will also see a big reduction in the fat carried around the waist...aspartame likes that part of your body. Give that stuff up and soon!!!!!
