    OK, everyone already posted.
I did get up and run. Got out a little later, but nice overcast was good (until it went away).
I was running great, in the zone.
I went to turn up this street to add more distance to my run when out of this yard came this giant Rottweiler.
    OMG:sick: :noway:
Scared me so bad. I sprayed at it with the pepper spray. There was a slight breeze, so it just brushed in front of his face. Just enough to make it not attack me. But if I didn't have it, I know it was going to get me.
I didn't really recover to well after that. I forced myself to run the rest of the 2 miles back (I was half way) but you know it really wasn't the same. I was doing so good that I was going to try and go 5 or 5.5 miles and now I am lucky I did the 4 miles.
I came home and called Amimal Control right away, that is why I am later enterying today. I hope they stop them from letting their dogs out in the mornings.

I'm so sick of dogs running around!!! My favorite thing to hear from owners of growling hair raised dogs, "Oh, he's friendly, he doesn't bite." That's crap! Don't they get that I BITE??? :noway:

    OMG!!! That is awful!
My daughters are terrified of dogs because they've been jumped on too many times as toddlers. Thankfully they were not rottweilers or other vicious dogs but still. Now every time a dog walks by us, my kids act like it's the boogie man. Most dog owners look at me like my girls crazy but they aren't, just too many bad experiences.
I'm glad you are okay, definitely shook up but okay. :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:

Speaking of vicicious dogs... I was reading something online the other day that dachshunds are the most aggressive breed. Watch out for those little ankle biters. (I know, I have one at home:laugh: )

Whenever a mean dog comes running at me, I just yell really loud at it, "No, you go home!" I do it in my meanest voice and so far they've always backed off. Sometimes the dog owner looks a little strangely at me, but I always think, man, I ALWAYS have my dog on a leash, and if you don't want people yelling at your "friendly" dog, you should probably do the same. I don't really mind if truly friendly dogs run up to me, but the ones that come up barking are the ones I yell at.

Everyone have a great day. By the way - say a prayer for my son if you would...I take him in for a follow up renal ultasound today. He had to have emergency surgery last year on his kidneys because his ureters were pulling urine back up from his bladder into his kidneys and his right kidney had major damage. The surgery was long and the recovery was very painful for him. We haven't "seen" any symptoms from him like before so we are hoping his ultrasound comes out perfect. He is really scared to go because he doesn't want them to say there is any problem. That's at 1:00 PM EST.

    Talk to you all later!!

So what's the word? Took both of my daughters for their annual checkups this morning.....I HATE IT!!! I hope you guys get good news. Update us when you can.

YIPEE!!! Thank God all is well with my boy. The radiologist said that she didn't see any reflux going on and that the implants look wonderful!! :smooched: :drinker: :drinker: :smooched: What a relief that is!

Ok so I barely pushed out 2 miles today. Yikes...I think all those hills yesterday really took a toll on my knees. When I hit the treadmill today and started running both knees, especially my right one, started tightening up. I probably overdid the mileage and the hills yesterday. I managed to push 2 out and then jumped off and did weights and abdominals for the next 45 min. Oh well....tomorrow is another day. I hope my knees rebound quickly.

Hope all of you have a wonderful Monday!! Thanks for all the prayers and the well wishes---they worked and I am truly grateful for all of you!!

Do you wear knee braces when you run? I do for my longer ones & it seems to help.

I ran 2 miles at 9:22 each, 1 miles at 8:57, and 2 x 0.5 miles at 4:00 each. I did a recovery jog (about 5 mph) between each interval

    Wow, so many posts already!

I got back from my trip to South Carolina late last night. I didn't exercise once and I ate terribly! Needless to say, I'm trying to push the guilt off today by eating SUPER healthy and attending my regularly schedule Boot Camp class tonight. I hope it's extra hard because I need a good kick in the butt!

Hey guys, seeing as this is a runner group I have a question. I run 3-4 times a week, not great mileage, between 4-8 km. But I now have a very sore foot; ball of the foot near big toe. Changed shoes (thought the old ones had worn down padding), but it still hurt. After about 10 min, my feet (ball part to toes) start to numb up and then the pain sets in. it is worse on one foot than the other. icing it and all, but does anyone have any other suggestions for a quick fix (been close to a week)??

    Carol,

I wish I had some good advice for you. My only suggestion would be to see a doctor.

I have pain on the sides of my feet (below baby toe) and when the pain gets bad I know I need to get a pedicure. I guess it has something to do with the thick skin around the bone (nasty I know).

    Good luck!

Carol - Do you have a good sports/running store close by? They might be able to diagnose your problem or recommend a good sports orthopedist or podiatrist. I have a dropped metatarsal that feels like my sock is balling up, when it is not, and makes my toes go numb. My running store diagnosed the problem, fixed me up with some pads for my shoes temporarily, and recommended I get some orthotics made. It made a huge difference. The problem is still there, but is now tolerable.

My problem was caused by a surgery I had several years ago after stepping on a nail. The problem did not show up until I upped my running mileage.

    Good luck

Thanks for the info. Am looking for a podiatrist, but will check at my local Running Room for info.

Mireille:Did the pedicure today hoping it would help, but it isn't a buildup of callused skin. Am debating running tomorrow, but don't want to leave my buddy in the lurch in case I have to walk it.

JD: That is what it feels like, a thick crease in my sock. will definitely look into it.

One other question: Are you of the school of buying shoes 1/2 to 1 size bigger to leave room for swelling or getting your size, because, after all, they do stretch out? I got my size, room in the front, toes don't rub, but they are 1/2 size smaller than I usually wear, as my shoe size in general has gone down a size. Just wondering!

    Welcome Carol!

I am a new runner so I have only owned two pairs of shoes so far. I have not found that the shoes stretched out. I purchased my first pair at a chain sporting goods store. With the help of a salesperson, I bought my normal shoe size. The shoes ended up being too small but I ran in them for months. For my second pair, I was fitted at a running store. They recommended leaving the width of your thumb across the top. He also checked that the shoe was snug but not tight across the widest part of my foot. I have been so comfortable in my running store shoes! The running store shoes even corrected a painful foot condition.

    Hope this helps
    -Kechie.

Do I overpronate? Sorry the word "pronate" tickles me.

When I do the foot print test, you know the one - wet your foot and look at your foot print on a hard surface, my foot print says "normal".

However, I was sitting here looking at the bottom of my current running shoes and I noticed the wear pattern. On my left shoe, the outside of my heel is worn more than the inside. And the inside (where big toe and second toe are located) of the toe box is worn more than the outside.

    -Kechie.

How much running is too much? I've been wanting to ask this question, but I didn't want to sound like sucha newbie haha. If my body isn't responding negatively then is it okay to go on another long run the next day? I'm sorry, but I have just become kinda obsessed haha and I looove how I feel after a long run. The millions of extra calories burned isn't too shabby either.

"Welcome to the nut house!" It is a great feeling. Isn't it? I wish I had discovered running earlier.

I think it depends on your total weekly mileage. Someone help us out here...

All the "experts" seem pretty consistent in recommending that you not increase your weekly totals by more than 10%.

I hate being gone from all of you all day long!! Such great stuff going on here - just know that while I am herding around the 7 year olds, I am cheering you all on in my heart!!

so, totally off topic - they let my 7 y.o. shoot a BB gun today! :noway: :noway: Now, first you have to know that my son is afraid of just about everything - even his own shadow - not exaggerating! Today he checked with me every 5 minutes on the weather and if there were going to be any thunderstorms. :noway: Anyway, he took right too it like he had been doing it his whole life!! Don't we always underestimate our own children!? Unbelieveable!!

I did 6 tonight after camp - definitely needed it! The weather was actually pleasant for a July day. Ran through the Naval Academy again - so incredibly picturesque! and the grounds were pretty too!

I missed you all today but I am so glad that there was good news happening! Makes me smile.

Have a great night and I will catch up with all of you at some point tomorrow. Tuesday is Body Pump Class and 3 miles!

p.s. did everyone sign up for the 100 mile challege at www.mapmyrun.com? Get going!!

I got in my 3.35 today. I also cut off 1minute 10 seconds off my overall time. Would it be bad if I tried to cut off a minute or 30 seconds everyday? I only have about 10 days of training before my race and I really want to be able to run it in less than 38 minutes. Today I ran it in 40 minutes 50 seconds. Am I even being realistic?
  • pmkelly409
    pmkelly409 Posts: 1,646 Member
Wow, i have soooo much to say!! I wouldn't say you are being un-realistic, but you have to realize that the time you run while training is not your race pace. you will run faster in a race just out of sheer adrenaline. Get your body very comfortable with the distance - which it sounds like you have - then do some interval/speedwork to increase your speed. Then remember a few things - with only 10 days to go, don't over train, you will have muscle fatigue. Also, go easy in the week before the race - then on race day - run your heart out!!! Run at a fast pace but not so fast that you cannot finish. Does this make sense?

You know what I did in my last race? I found a couple in the first mile who were running at a pace that was fast/comfortable for me, I ran with then the entire race and I finished in 26 minutes!
