Wow, everyone getting a late start this morning?
good morning runners!! and resters!!
and a special welcome to any Newbies who might be peeking in here to see what this is all about. If you only run for 5 minutes or you run for 5 hours (yes, angie we must brag about you!) you are welcome here for support, encouragment and learning, etc.....
I ran 7 last night in the 90 degree heat! surprisingly the heat didn't bother me. We ran most of the time through a shaded park so that was helpful. I did have a lot of problems with my feet last night. My toe on one foot is bruised and my heel on the other foot was hurting. so it was not a comfortable run at all.
We had a Nutritionist guest speaker last night. I am going to collect all my notes and post the good info she gave us later.
Got to go feed the kiddies!!
Have a great Tuesday everyone!

I think they are all being good and are out running right now as we post. :drinker:
My herniated disk is acting way up so I spent 45 mins at the gym stretching. I had originally gone to do a yoga class but that was canceled. No running today but I hope to be able to run next week. If the pain continues, I will make an appt with the ortho to talk about pain management. :frown:0 -
Morning,
I woke up to pounding rain against my window this morning (again). It's been raining a lot and it's really starting to get to me. We have gotten almost double the amount of rain than we normally do in the month of July (and the month isn't over). Plus most of them have been thunderstorms. I guess I picked a bad year to train for a 1/2. lol
Trying to stay strong. :ohwell:
Tricia, way to go on your 7miles! I can't wait to hear what the nutritionist had to say. :flowerforyou:0 -
Awesome to see other runners out here. I just joined last week and I'm looking for motivation to get out there and run! Its HOT & HUMID here in Illinois. UGH! But I've been out there running in this heat. So far down about 4 lbs.0
-
Morning!
Just finished 4 miles. Felt really good out there, wish I had time for a longer run.
Tricia - I still say you East Coasters are amazing, I just don't think I could run/walk/survive the humidity ya'll have. Good job on your 7-miles!
Mireille - Bummer!!!!! I'd say you've had more then your fair share of rain!
Sherry - Don't mess around w/your disk problem, take care of yourself!
& welcome msamson!! :flowerforyou: It's fun & motivating checking your progress in here everyday.0 -
You guys are torturing me. I am laid up in this recliner not being able to move and ya'll are talking about running. It's like waiving cake in front of a fat kid!!!!!   5 more weeks, 5 more weeks, 5 more weeks!!!!!!!!!  :bigsmile:0

Good morning everyone! Thanks for the invitation and welcome to newbies. For me anyway, I feel a lot more comfortable posting after a warm welcoming like that! I have to admit that I'm very intimidated by some of the posts, but yet inspired as well.
As I posted later last week, I had run two laps around the track at the Y during one of my training sessions without too much trouble. Well, yesterday I was able to run 4 laps around (at an okay pace) and did not feel completely wiped out!!! It's baby steps, but it's progression. It is such a rush to know you did it and then want to strive to do more.
Hope each of you have a great Tuesday and thanks for encouraging those of us who are just starting out!!!0 -
Good morning:flowerforyou:
I ran 5 miles bright and early this morning. It was another juicy day!
Can't wait to hear what everyone is up to today...
Someday is NOT a day of the week. Make it a great day!

So, as much as I HATE running (I always have, it sucks too), I guess I have to be part of this group, cuz I run 3 to 5 times a week. *sigh*
Well, I'll give you guys the SHORT short version of my running history. Started when I was about 10, always had a runners body, ran track in high school, ran the 600 yard dash, was very good at it, but hated it, I had Osgood Schlatters disease in highschool (it's similar to shin splints in that bone chips pull away from the upper shin, but it's caused by rapid growth instead of impact and stress) and it made running hurt. Unfortunately I was EXTREMELY good at running and when I went to the track coach's office just before my senior year to tell him I wasn't running that year, he basically told me he was making me captain, well I couldn't quit at that point! Sadly, running was my best sport, better then football by far, and better then baseball, thus I received a lot of individual training from the coach. So I know how to run long distances, I have a runners body, and a runners gate. Course my mind is always very busy, so running for me is basically a time where my brain has very little to do so it starts running off on all kinds of weird tangents, which, being a math guy at heart, drives me insane.
So now I run, I run for health, and I run for competition, I guess it's good for me to do it even though I don't like it because I get to focus on my will power, but I just wish I could learn to like it.0 -
You runners are my inspiration. I'm really motivated to do a kick *kitten* job today. I'm going to shoot for the 3 x 10 again today and see how far I get with that. Eventually one day I should be able to do it.
Good job everyone!0 -
Hey everybody!
Welcome to the runner's club Banks! I've learned a lot from your posts in the past, especially when I was a newbie, so it's great to have you here giving us runners your input.
I'm just leaving to do a speed workout. It's two 4 by 400's as fast as I can with a minute rest in between each 400. I'll also do a couple of warmup miles and cooldown miles so I should get in about six today.
Nice job Kechie and Tricia running in the humidity! It's a great running weather pattern here in Oregon right now. For the past several days it's been cloudy in the morning burning off to sunny and warm in the afternoon. That's perfect for a morning run.
Have a great day runners!:flowerforyou:

I'm still plodding away at about 10:00/mile. Gotta really work on my speed.
So, bit the bullet & signed up for the 1/2 marathon. {{GULP}} Three more weeks.0 -

Wow, that seems impossible, but than again, maybe not...I remember when I thought I'd never get past my initial six minutes on the elliptical...LOL!!! There is HOPE0 -

Hang in there girl - it is all for a good cause - 5 weeks in nothing in the big picture of life!! :flowerforyou:0 -
First, Good Morning everyone, it is a wonderful day in the neighborhood!
I tried eating a Meleluca access nutrition bar (Chocolate Peanut Butter Krisp) this morning before my run and I think it really did help.
 I ran my best run since I have been re-training. I did 5.5 miles and easily. I was going to go for 6, but as I was passing my house, my husband was still home (he ran late) so I stopped to say goodbye before he went to work. Normally he would have been gone and I wasn't even going to turn down my steet, but then I saw the truck from the corner.
Anyway, it was a great run, and I ran the last 4 miles (where my daughter turns off) without stopping once. It kind of works out well with her running the first 1.5 miles with me. She needs to stop and walk a couple of times and it works to help warm me up and at the point I take off as she heads home, I just go. :drinker:
As I was running today I could feel it was a Forest Gump Day!
The only thing I have to get use to is the hunger after I have already eaten this morning. I have found the longer I go the better, but once I eat, I am hungary all day. :grumble: I eat twice as much during the day if I eat first thing in the morning. My breakfast is usually at 11AM
I will try to keep busy, I was going to run and pick up some bricks from Home Depot, good workout there, and laying them down. Only getting 40 of the ft sq ones, but it will still be a good work out! Have to do it now before I have to go back to work in about a week.
Hope you all have a great day!

WELCOME!!!! You have brought all of us so much great info over the past year - hopefully we can find a way to turn your busy brain off and fall in love with running. It will never be baseball, I know - but there is something so therapeutic about being out there early in the morning or late at night and appreciating your surroundings, your neigbors, nature..bad landscaping! :noway:
Looking forward to seeing your posts each day. Hey, are you still doing your strength program you set up a couple of months ago? sure do miss songbird don'tcha? I know I do.0 -
Hi all! I'm excited about reading all of your posts later ... there are lots of great discussions going on! For now I just wanted to give a quick shout out and let you know I did 3 miles in the heat and humidity this morning (even at 6:30am it was still pretty miserable).0
-
Did I miss Angie's post about her run last Saturday??? I've been dying to hear how it went.0

I do still do strength, 2 to 3 times a week depending on the week. I do miss SBS she was very smart about all things health related, I see her on here every once in a while.
We'll see about how much I can learn to enjoy running, I'll keep an open mind (so to speak).
Thanks for the welcome. Glad to be here.0 -

Okay, Nutrition lesson for the day!! My training group met with a Nutritionist last night after our run and she gave us some good (albeit basic) information on what you should eat when training for longer runs and general working out too.
First suggestion is to set your daily percentages at 50% carb, 25% protein, 25% fat. Mine is close to that, I had been at 55%, 25%, 20%, but she suggested a higher protein % to help repair muscles and avoid injury, so I changed mine to 50%, 30%, 20%.
Second, and expectedly, she talked alot about hydration. We all know what we have to do!! She suggested 1-8oz cup on the hour every hour.
this was interesting about hydration/dehydration - did you all know that you can tell if you are dehydrated by the color of your urine? Have I been living under a rock? At bedtime, your urine should be the color of lemonade. any darker and you are dehydrated. Here is an article and a color chart.
http://chppm-www.apgea.army.mil/dhpw/Wellness/SelfCare/ClassBrief/SCClassBriefPart2.ppt (let me know if it doesn't open and I will save it a different way)
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0876/is_n52/ai_8542521
She suggested weighing yourself before you run and then immediately after you run to see how much water you are losing so you can recover properly and also learn if you need to be drinking more while running. She said if you are down like 3lbs post run - you could be doing damage.
Okay, for you those of you who are running 6-10 miles - this is for training or race:
Pre-Run - 2 hours before - 12-24 oz water + high carbs (1-2 pieces of fruit with cereal) + low protein (yogurt, milk)
30 minutes before run - 8-12 oz water
During run - every 4-6 miles (20-30 minutes depending on your speed) - power gel, gu, clif shot and every 10-15 minutes 6-8oz water or gatorade (I cannot drink this much when running!)
Post Run - 1 hour after - 24-32oz water or sports drink + protein bar (myoplex, etc.), bagel w/ pb, turkey or ham sandwich, boost breeze
(this is actually the same formula for 1/2 and full marathons)
Okay, have to get some work done - more later!!0 -
Did I miss Angie's post about her run last Saturday??? I've been dying to hear how it went.
Yes, she posted yesterday here and also in a general discussion titled 50K/31miles.....0 -

Okay, thanks, I'll look for it! :flowerforyou:
The nutrition info is interesting too. I don't like to eat a lot before a long run because of..."potty" issues.0 -
Hello! Gahh the summer heat is KILLING my runs so I took it inside the gym today and did 5 miles on the treadmill. Afterwards I went to a cardio kickboxing class! I love days when I sweat so much that my shirt is a different color afterwards hahaha. Yay for 1000 calories burned! Welp, gotta get ready for work..hope everyone enjoys their day!0
-
Well poop, my workout buddy wants to take a cardio class at the gym today and convinced me to join her. So, i'll be doing that instead of my jog today. I'll work on the jog tomorrow and hopefully have good news to report.
Hope everyone has a great run today!0
