♥ How do you take Compliments?

I don't know if it's just me or does anyone else have a problem taking Compliments?? I just don't know how to react to people when they stop me at work and ask me how much weight I've lost or when someone tells me how Amazing i look.
For Example, I posted a pic on my Facebook and I got a ton of comments saying how Skinny I look, that im doing Great. Why can't I just say Thank You?? Instead I come back with "Far from Skinny" or I still have a Long way to go.. WTF!!!
Does this happen to anyone?? I got to admit the compliments make me feel FABULOUS..

When I get compliments in person I feel like they are just lying to me. Especially when it comes from a guy (which is very very very rare)

I am the same! My boyfriend is always telling me that i am amazing, gorgeous, slim and dont need to loose weight etc....but i either ignore him or shoot it back by disagreeing
  • You're right, sometimes just saying "thank you" seems a bit hollow. Maybe follow it up with something like, "It really means a lot that my efforts are noticed." Or, you could say something along the lines of, "I couldn't have done it without the support from my friends!"

I got two comments on fbook from friends (the only two) that know I've been trying to loose more weight...I didn't take it well. I feel like they are just saying it to make me feel better, but it doesn't...

You all should be proud of what you've accomplished!! You deserve those compliments!!!
  • I agree with Stefani!
For those of you who feel the need to disagree, that comes from our natual senses of humility that we as women are blessed with! Sometimes that translates into a lack of self-confidence and can be disheartening, so embracing our successes and letting them propel them towards completing our goals is always the best idea!

I've never taken them well, and don't know that I ever will. Maybe an NSV we could work on :)

Well, I've always had those family members that said "Ohh you're losing weight! You look good!" even when I had obviously gained like 5 or 10 pounds, so when they say it NOW, since I have actually lost alot of weight, I wonder if they really mean it or if it's still just a part of the routine. When friends and their parents notice, I light up like a torch, smiling and saying thank you. I love compliments though! It just depends on who they're from.

Yeah, I'm working on that too...I have to consciously keep myself from calling bullsh!t and just say thank you or tell them how nice they are.
Easier said than done though. I still frequently get chewed out by my friends for arguing when i get a compliment...

I usually tell people "Thank you" first.

And then remind them that I'm traveling on a long road to where I want to be and some days the trip is easy and some days its not, but that I'll get there eventually.

Remember and ask yourself: Why are losing weight - for them or for you ?? Stay true to your path/direction and you'll never be disappointed !!!!

    Good Luck . . . .

I'm right there with you. I've caught myself not to give them a drawn out story and just say "thank you, but it sure doesnt feel like it." Like people say we are our worse critic. Keep up the great work.

This is a great answer. By doing this, you accept the compliment, without apologizing for it, but you don't come across as arrogant either. I find that on MFP everyone is way more relaxed with these socialisms, but in my daily life and on facebook, people are offended if I'm not a little more humble about things, lol.

I usually just say thank you. And then it all gets awkward cuz they ask "how you did it".

I think it's definitely appropriate and necessary to just respond with a smile and a "thank you!" It's short and simple and there's really nothing else that needs to be said to a compliment of any kind. You don't need to go into how you did it or what your goal is or how long it took or how you still feel bad about your progress. Being able to accept a compliment is such a simple thing, but it's so hard for many people. However it can immediately make you appear confident, self-assured, gracious and positive - plus it makes the giver of the compliment feel good. Being unable to take one can make you come off as insecure or unhappy - and it's likely to make the giver of the compliment feel awkward or uncomfortable.

maybe you could use both..say something like " thank you for noticing, so far, but wait until you see me after i take more off, i still have more to go" that way nobody will feel bad or akward  best of luck..TRY to take them

I have to admit, I have no trouble at all accepting compliments from people who tell me I'm looking much slimmer. Sure, I have a long ways to go, and I'm doing it for me and not other people. But the ego boost sure does help. Take those compliments and run with them! Acknowledge your hard work, give yourself a pat on the back, and enjoy!

I think we all do this to some degree, sometimes it’s because we think they are patronizing because we don’t think we have really lost that much yet. And here is the big one, IMO it’s because too many times when someone says wow you have done a good job and lost a bunch of weight. We hear, wow you used to be so much fatter.

I'm the same way, and I realize I'm doing it after its done, and then I feel bad. I'm always saying "Thank you, but... then I fill in the rest with whatever my insecurities may be for that day, like, "I still need to get rid of this muffin top." I need to just work on appreciating people giving me the compliment and really appreciate them taking the time to tell me how great they think I'm doing!
