Hello Everybody,
Here is the issue that I am having. All week long I have been walking ALOT and going to the gym..today, my back is very, very bad. I have Multi level Degenerative Disc Disease..which equals alot of pain. Anyways, today I am in alot of pain, but I still want to do some kind of exercising...so here is the question.. Does anyone have any suggestions for me that I can do to work my arms and maybe my abs..but yet go easy because of my back??? Otherwise, I am going to take my meds, and go work out and say to heck with the pain.
Thanks to all for any and all advice.
Good Luck to everyone on their journey and have an Awesome day!!

My mom had this and one of my brothers had to have surgery due to this disease. It's not something to mess with and IMO, I don't think I'd be asking people here for suggestions if you care about your back. This is something I'd strongly recommend you asking your doctor or someone who's familiar with this disease what you could/should do.
I know that if you take advice from the wrong person and do it long enough, you could put yourself in a wheelchair permanently. My brother was told that with some of the things he did.
On this one, please try someone who's professional for your own safety.
Best wishes, too!!!0 -

Have you ever tried pilates? My sister has the same thing and she started doing pilates 2-3 times a week. The workouts weren't as intense, she started slowly and now she has no pain at all in her back.0

Swimming, using exercise ball and when walking I also use MBT shoes I don't know if you guys heard of it. http://us.mbt.com/error.html?aspxerrorpath=/Default.aspx I used to have a lot of pain in my legs, but this shoe really helped even though I cannot say that it solves the sickness or disease problems, but can reduce the pain.0

what about excercising in a pool? aquacise classes? you dont put any pressure on your joints so I would assume it would be easier on the back as well.0

this. (not the anecdote, just the resulting opinion).0 -
I agree with the aquacize - but definitely see your doctor and your physiotherapist for suggestions of safe exercises for you.0

Please don't think you can push through this. Listen to your body. I have this from the base of my scull to my tailbone and I really have to listen to what it's telling me or I end up not being able to even stand up and support my own weight.
I would recommend any exercises you were ever given for Physical Therapy as a starting point. These will not hurt you and could help alleviate the pain. I know it sounds weird because everyone says walking helps backs but sometimes, if we're too tight when we walk we end up hurting more after even if we only crawl along at a toddler's pace.
It might be better for you to do one day on and one day off until you can build up to walking everyday. When I started here I wanted to have a goal of walking at least 15 minutes (which meant 1/2 mile for me around my apts) every day but after the 3rd day I couldn't stand up. I gave up on the exercising and focused on my food until about 6-8 weeks in. I shed some weight which always helps back problems and went out when I felt I could handle it. If I was even a little sore the next day, I didn't do it. I still don't work out everyday but I am able to do a modified version of the 30d Shred and I have noticed my core is getting stronger which also helps stabilize my back for walking.
You might want to avoid crunches for now too until you can build up your back strength and flexibility. PT moves are the best way to go to get started. They might not burn very much but at least you won't end up bedridden which for us can happen by coughing or even sneezing.0 -
You need to talk to your Doctor. But doing some strength training on your core, before you start walking so much will probably be recommended.0
