I cannot jog any longer than 3 minutes

I am a big fan of running/jogging but the problem is with me is that I can't last any more than three minutes. I jog at 8.5mph and after three minutes, my chest is burning and I end up pulling a muscle in my back from breathing heavily or too quickly.
I keep very well hydrated throughout and I have been power walking and jogging for about 6 months. I do not have asthma or any other disorders that could be affecting it.
I want to be able to jog outside in the summer and it's going to be embarrassing if I end up stopping during the process whilst I am on the pathway near the main road lol!
Thanks!

Wow...way too fast I think. I started out at 2.5...and worked up from there. I could only go about 10 minutes and am now up to an hour. I have moved on to the elliptical which is harder, I think anyway.0
-
maybe reduce ur speed a bit --- ur probably going way too fast ( for now) 8.5 try 5.0 or 4.50
-
YES SLOW DOWN kiddo! If you can only run for three minutes you are running way too fast! Best of luck! Be kind to yourself0

8.5 is not a JOG
Check out the C25K (Couch to 5K) program, it will help you build up your endurance and speed..0 -
It works better than one would assume, just by taking a quick glance and using basic logic.
Read, follow, enjoy and good luck.

I agree with the others. Slow down your pace and dont forget to breathe evenly.0
-
Yes, def reduce your speed..8.5 is a SPRINT! lol. I usually jog/run around 5.5 - 6.5 on the treadmill and can maintain that speed for quite some time. Just slow down a bit and you should be fine!0
-
Have you tried the Couch to 5K running program?
Also check with your doctor. My boss was having breathing problems and could not work out for more than 15 minutes at a time and the doctors think it is his immune system attacking his lungs.0 -
It's because you are trying to go far too fast. Try slowing to 6mph, and see how long you can keep going at that speed. I had the same issue at first. I thought I couldn't run, but it was because I was sprinting. At first your jogging shouldn't be a lot faster than your walk.0

I'm definitely interested in learning more about this. I'd like to be able to run and jog but I breathe so heavily so soon after starting and it gets really bad even where the nose will start running I went to the doctor and they didn't seem to think anything was wrong with me or out of the ordinary, granted I couldn't get them to run any tests on me. They just prescribed a basic generic inhaler that doesn't do much. Maybe I am just that out of shape? even in high school I was never able to run the mile like the other kids. Any tips or information on this would be so helpful.
Thanks for asking the question parisianskies0020 -
Try doing intervals, so if u can only do 3 mins, do 3 mins jogging, 1 min walking until u need to stop0
-
Echo what everyone else says. That way too fast. I've been running for a month and am only to 5.5 mph for 30 minutes...0
-
I can't jog for that long either, but at 4.5. I'm working my way up though0
-
Yeah, too fast a pace. Slow down so you can run longer and then gradually increase your speed as your body gets more efficient at running. If your body's not used to it, you just can't supply it with oxygen fast enough to maintain that pace.
Also keep in mind that the first few minutes of your run can be the hardest until you warm up and get into your groove with your pace and breathing.0 -
Slow down! It's better to start slower and perfect your form and breathing. I agree-C25K is great!0
-
8.5 MPH is fast just by any standard. I run at about 7.5 to 8.5 MPH but I have been running for years.
Slow down. Just one step at a time!
If you want to get faster, you do wind sprints. Start out at say 5 MPH for 2 minutes then go like 6 MPH for one minute. Do that for like 30 minutes - 1 hour. Just work your way up there.0 -
The best thing you can do is be realistic about where you currently are, and trust with time and discipline you will reach whatever goals you set. If you are jogging it should be at a pace that you can at least maintain for a half hour to get the best results.0
-
I jog at 4.5 for an hour. At anything above 6, I am running and wouldn't last more than 5 minutes.... and I do have asthma. I think you should slow it down and maybe look into doing Couch 2 5k program also.0
-
My nose always runs when I jog. Always. I think for some people it just does.0
-
WOW, that's intense. I'm huge so I still run at 4.3 being the highest. But 8.5, wow...0
-
At 8.5 you are also in a more anaerobic state than an aerobic state, so it's no surprise your chest starts burning and you pull muscles. But major KUDOS for lasting a full 3 minutes at that speed...I'm impressed!!! Seriously.0
-
Holy hanna, I wouldn't be able to run longer than 3 minutes either at 8.5mph! Slow it down to 6.0mph for 2 minutes, then sprint to 8.5 for a minute.
You want to build up your endurance and this definitely works!0 -
maybe reduce ur speed a bit --- ur probably going way too fast ( for now) 8.5 try 5.0 or 4.5
Completely agree. When I started I tried to do about 5mph and took it down to about 4.5. I'm faster now but nowhere near 8.5...that's a 7min mile. And quite frankly, I know some fast runners, but none of them are anywhere near that pace. Slow it down, and like a few others have said, find yourself a plan. Tons of them out on the internet.
New runners have a habit of trying to do too much too fast or go too fast. That's how they get hurt!0 -
yeah 8.5 is pretty fast. start at like a 12 mile per minute job. When you jog - breathe in cadence thru your nose - in two three out two three. There are also some good articles out there for deep breathing. i have found that when i do long runs and my breathing starts getting funky - slow down and breathe DEEP from your belly. Take all the air out and then back in. It re-oxygenates your lungs and i SWEAR it helps.
Also if you can, find someone to run w u. The trick is to find someone a little better than you. you will push yourself much harder.0 -
I've been running for a little while now - I can generally do about 6 mph for 30-40 minutes. However, I've switched to intervals instead of one straight pace. I do 6 mph and less to cool down from my 'sprints' at 8.5 LOL! You're going WAY too fast. I'm no expert runner by any means, but I am more than a beginner and I'm pushing myself hard to do 8.5 mph for 60 second intervals. It's impressive that as a beginner you can do 8.5 for 3 minutes!! Slow it down and you'll do great!0
-
I have never been able to control my breathing when I jog either... I can say you are definately going to fast. The Couch to 5K helped me a lot. give it a try it builds up your speed and edurance a little at a time.
Good Luck!

8.5mph isn't jogging... that's flat out RUNNING!!!
How about slowing down? I started out at 5mph and after four months, I'm up to averaging about 6.7.
Maintaining your 8.5 mph pace would mean doing a 5k in about 20 minutes. That's crazy fast... about the fastest pace of the female athletes that win our local races, anyway. And I can bet you they didn't start out running that fast.
And another thing... so what if you have to stop while running in public? There's nothing wrong with that at all, not even if it's during a race. No one is going to judge you. No one even knows what your plan is. For all they know, you might be training by running a few minutes, then walking. That's how the Couch to 5k and a lot of other running plans train.0 -
8.5 is not a jog, it's a sprint. Slow it down and you'll be fine...0
-
My suggestion would be to run at 5.0mph for as long as you can. If you like speed, do 45 second sprints at 7.5mph for 45 seconds or a minute. Running at 8.5mph is a SPRINT! I guarantee if you can do 8.5mph for 3 minutes, you can certainly do a mile at 5.0mph. It may seem slow, but I would gradually work my way up to a faster run. I really enjoy running at a "slower" speed and then sprinting. I've noticed that sprinting has really helped with distance (meaning, I can run a lot further than I could before).0
-
8.5 mph = ~7 minute miles = really damn fast
slow WAY down to a "conversational pace" = a speed at which you can talk to someone without out huffing and puffing0
