This forum is for those of us who are shorter in stature. Loosing weight and getting fit is hard enough, but when you are under 5'4" there are additional challenges.

In my case if the person before me at the gym left the cable on the top setting, I can't reach it and have to have some one help me. Silly, but one of those things that can keep me from exercising if there isn't a nice tall person around. Usually, there is but it did take me a while to get brave enough to ask.

How did you do in April? What are your fitness and wellness plans for May? What challenges do you face in your journey to a healthier life?

This group has really helped me a lot and I look forward to a successful month of May. While it is geared towards shorter people any one is welcome to post with us.

Jenomaha – I just noticed your ticker. How wonderful you are a trainer. Hopefully, that makes it easy for you to get to the gym and work out.

Ashleighasbury – How did the Zumbamarathon go?

Babygurl – Wow! I am both amazed at your time and admire you for your determination to do the race. I hope you have a nice and restful Sunday to ease your sore muscles.

DailyOrange – That sounds like a grueling routine, but I bet it will be very effective. I do two circuits at lower weights of all the machines I am allowed by the Ortho I see for my shoulders. I was suppose to be at a mid weight by now, but it still looks like I will be able to avoid surgery for at least one, maybe both shoulders anyway. PS: I love Bear Mountain!

Barbiecat - You are lucky to be retired these days. Especially, since you were a teacher. Teachers are being treated so poorly these days yet it is one of the most important careers in the world. Still you are a very determined and consistent with both exercise and food.

I have to really re-think my goals now that I will be working full time again. I use to exercise 30 minutes cardio 6-7 days a week and what I did varied on the day. I use to walk my dogs a lot. We have a stationary bike in the house, a Wii and balance board, 1-5 pound weights and a couple of workout DVDs. My life is so hectic between my elderly parents living with me, two teenagers and a hubby with a bad back. Sometimes I feel lucky if I can even sit down for a minute without hearing my name being called. I like going to the Y but don't seem to get there often enough.

Enough whining. lol I will post my goals for May later.
Have a great Sunday all and :drinker: here's to a healthy day!

Thanks ladies for all the congrats it's nice to have all my great friends support! So as I said my time was 2hr and 37min thats better than my time from last year which was 3hr and 6min. So I'm pretty happy with that. I was pretty nervous at first becuase we started so far in the back but I knew my time didn't start until I crossed the start line. I didn't make enough time to eat anything before the race which was a big mistake. At mile 5 or 6 I got major cramps in both calves. I tried slowing down, I tried to stop and stretch them, I tried to walk for a few minutes but nothing seemed to work it just got worse. So I just started to run again. When the pain got to bad to bear I would walk for a few minutes. It felt like my calves were literally going to rip open! I don't think I lost to much time walking because I really didn't walk that much but it's ok. So today I am pretty sore achy. I took a nice hot bath earlier and have sworn off all housework today. Well thats a plus..lol

I did have enough time to weigh in yesterday morning so I weighed in this morning and was right on the money!!! 100 pounds!!!!:drinker: :drinker: I'm so excited!! I even ate 2 cupcakes last night that I recently got a recpie for..granted the are somewhat healthy..no eggs, oil or butter in the mix and super delish!!! I am so happy to be at my goal. now do I keep loosing or do I maintain??  I hope everyone has a great day!

Jam - actually, when personal training was the majority of my work, I hardly had time to lift weights for myself...that's when I started packing on the pounds!!! I only got back into weight lifting 2x week in January and 3x week last month. But since starting back with my weights and tracking, I lost weight immediately. Now Idon't care what I weigh, I just want to change my body composition. (of course I have a range I'd like to stay within, but that's it).

Babygurl - congrats on your improved time!!! My ultimate goal is to run a half marathon. Other than that, I'm not much of a runner, but I do love intervals and 5ks.

Dailyorange - I would love to answer any questions you have...I LOVE to lift heavy and loved that program!!

Today's workout: 5 min warm up on step mill, 45 min weightlifting, 10 min running intervals on treadmill. I just got invited to a 2 hr Zumba even tonight and sushi afterward...so excited!!! I love both sushi and Zumba!!

    Have a lovely afternoon ladies!!

Good Morning to all my fit friends:bigsmile:

:flowerforyou: today is my Isagenix cleanse day so with the lower calories I consume during the day, I use this day as a sort of a rest day, however, with dogs, there is no rest    I walk the dogs one at a time on the grassy hill near our house to do their morning business, then I have breakfast (which is barely anything on cleanse day  ) then I leashed both dogs and took them for a 30 minute walk around the neighborhood where they were teased by lots of little birds and gave me a bit of a workout keeping them under control.

:flowerforyou: ;later this morning I took a walk for over an hour with a friend who admitted that she was out of shape but she kept up with me and agreed that we should get together more often to walk.

 the rest of the day was more restful with laundry, a few household chores and a nap   now we are watching "Airplane"

  Jeannie, thank you for starting the new thread and giving us such an inspirational welcome:bigsmile: I know you will find a way to get your exercise even with longer working hours

:flowerforyou: babygurl, congrats on achieving a better time on your race in spite of not eating ahead of time and having some pain along the way:bigsmile: I admire you for all the work you did to prepare for the race.

:flowerforyou: dailyorange, I've been in Manhattan several times and enjoyed the exciting pace and so much to see, but deep down I am a small town person. I have a weekly phone conversation with a cousin who lives in Manhattan and she is such a New Yorker that she would be lost living where I do. There are so many opportunities where you are. I worked out in a gym when I was in my 30's and did some fairly heavy lifting and loved it, but then I got married and my interests changed.

:flowerforyou: jenomaha, enjoy your Zumba and sushi. It sounds fun and delicious

  my dogs are Standard Poodles. There is a picture of them on my profile page. Brandy is the black one and Sasha is the red one. They are smart and a lot of fun but they need a lot of attention and exercise so they keep me busy.

    Hola! Good morning =)

jam0525 - Eep, I hope all goes well with your shoulders and that you can avoid surgery! Definitely take care of your body to avoid injury =). Bear Mountain is awesome, but I've been hiking there two times already last month, time for me to find another location hehe.

barbiecat - I definitely love being in NYC. There's so much to do, see, and EAT! During the winter, the boyfriend and I ate out a lot, thus I gained some poundage. Nothing ever seems to close, so eating late into the night became a regular routine haha. Now we adopt a healthier lifestyle. I'm usually the cook and recently I've been having way too much fun with our food processor :D.

jenomaha - Hehe! I'm glad you made it out to TJ's. I seriously don't know why I never went before, but I'm glad I went! It gets crazy though, the lines in NYC. They form all the way to the back and there are people who stand with signs saying "this is the end of the line". But overall it's totally worth it!

Recap of my workout yesterday. Weight-training for about 30-35 minutes. Treadmill intervals for 20 minutes, 5 minute warmup/cooldown.

Today I'm not sure what I'll be doing, maybe swim some laps. Hope everyone has a nice day :glasses:

 I think the fit and fun sized ladies are busy working out and not spending as much time at the computer

:flowerforyou: my goal last month was to do some exercise early in the morning. before that I was using my early morning to do stuff at the computer including reading all the inspiring posts on the three threads I post on and writing something back.....it was great but I was missing some prime exercise time that I didn't seem to be able to find later in the day.....so now I either ride the exercise bike and watch TV while I eat my Isagenix shake ( about 20 minutes) or I take the dogs for a walk around my neighborhood (about 30 minutes).....some mornings I have time to do both.......I liked doing that so much that I'm sticking to that plan this month and getting on the computer later in the day.

  my goal this month is upper body exercise......here are my thoughts so far  with lower body stuff ( "Gut 'n' Butt") the hardest part was getting down on the ground to do it but at least it had a catchy title in my exercise diary........the upper body stuff is easier to fit in a little at a time even while watching TV but it doesn't have a catchy name and I haven't figured out how to log it into my exercise diary so I give myself no calories burned credit for it yet.

:flowerforyou: today was my advanced line dance class in the morning and I just got back from 55 minutes of walking at the dog park

    Jeannie

I've been kind of staying the same since November - bouncing around the same 2 pounds. My ultimate goal is to lose about 20 more pounds. It will still probably put me in the overweight category as I'm 5 feet 1/2 inch, but I like the shape my body is taking so why get bogged down by a number. My plan for May is to just go with a salad, soup or sandwich for one of my meals to help cut back some calories and do some outdoor exercise like walking/biking to get fresh air now that it's nice out. I face the challenge of having bunion surgery on June 1 and trying not to gain any weight during my recovery period. I plan on doing arm weights, stuff I can do sitting down.

    All for now - Kim

Is this a closed group, or are you open to new people?? I'm 5'0" and have come quite a ways, but I know it will take even more effort to get the last 15-20 lbs gone. Having the support of other shorties would be great!

    Hello everyone,

I am bummed that we will have to quit the Y at the end of the summer for financial reasons. We really should quit now, but I just love to swim outdoors and it's the best outdoor pool around.

The economy is just one more form of stress we don't need.

Kim - Good luck with your surgery. You are right to plan upper body stuff. I wonder if you will be able to swim at all. That is no weight on your foot. Don't worry about staying the same. The slower you take it off the longer you will keep it off.

I am doing OK at staying at or near my allowed calories. These last 10 pounds will take forever. Being short does make it harder as height effects the calories you need. So, it is definitely harder.

But, I will continue as long as it takes then learn how to keep it off.

One of my least favorite upper body exercises is picking up _____________ in the yard from my horses and dogs. But, it is definitely an upper body strength builder. lol

Barbie - I am still in awe of your making it over a year signing in everyday. Kudos.

:flowerforyou: my mom and MIL are deceased so I have no mother to honor today, my stepdaughter sent me a beautiful e card with a photo of her sons with my hubby and me (it's my current profile picture) and hubby and I went for a walk through the Irrigation Festival Arts and Crafts Fair and watched the Olympic Mountain Cloggers dance then went to lunch in a nearby Chinese restaurant where I had my favorite restaurant meal     chicken curry:bigsmile:   in the morning my doggie daughters took me to the dog park for a long walk with leashes and an even longer time at the off leash park where they chased birds and I got a good walk----the terrain is so grassy and uneven, that the walk resembles marching in the sand in combat boots

:flowerforyou: so today for the actual Mothers Day we are doing an Isagenix cleanse day and mostly laying low from exercise (except, of course, going to the dog park    )

:flowerforyou: Happy Mothers Day to all who celebrate it today.

:flowerforyou: I honor my mother by being eternally grateful for the things she taught me (especially love of animals, dancing, and keeping good financial records )

I'm "here". It's been a busy week. Two track meets far away from my home, a senior recognition dinner for my son = not much logging my food and/or any real great exercise. Plus my foot has really been hurting so I'm really trying to take it easy and can't wait for my surgery to be over.

Okay, enough whining. What is everyone else doing? Are you doing anything different than last month?

    Hello all,

Busy week is an understatement. My DS was in the emergency room twice, but he is doing OK now.

I am going to have to focus on diet more than exercise going forward even though I know I need to do both.

Here is a little community service news for you all....................
picking up trash on the side of the highway is suppose to burn between 100 to 106 calories per half hour. We had a highway cleanup project at work and I was surprised when I googled " picking up trash" how made hits I got. All of them quoted about the same calorie burn. We were out there for 90 minutes cleaning our section of the highway in front of our offices. It was a lot of fun and we plan to do another section when the weather is cooler in the fall.

The company threw the work crew a potluck when we got back. There was so much fruit and veggies it was amazing and lots of salads and of course water.

    Have a great weekend everyone,

Let's try to all post once a week at least just so we don't worry about each other too much.

  exercise for me has been lots of walking
in the parking lot at the ferry terminal, on the ferry, in the house, at the dog park, in the neighborhood with and without dogs. :brokenheart: my exercise bike is still not fixed but I won't let that get me down

:flowerforyou: After a few minutes of whining about the rain this morning while the dogs sat next to me looking sad and wondering why we weren’t going for a morning walk, I put on my coat and hat and got my umbrella and went for a walk by myself to contemplate what to do with the rest of the day……imagine my surprise when I remembered that I had made the decision months ago to take the dogs to the dog park no matter what the weather. So I came home, changed into my walk in the mud shoes and loaded the dogs in the car and went to the dog park where they chased birds and ran or more than an hour. They wanted to stay longer but I was getting soaked and still had to stop at the market on the way home. So now the dogs are asleep, I’m showered and wearing dry clothes and my pedometer has recorded over 12000 steps.

:flowerforyou: Jeannie, I am sorry to hear that your son is having problems again....you are such a great mom always being there for your kids.   you are right about useful chores being good calorie burners:bigsmile: all exercise doesn't have to be "at the gym" or something formal

Sorry...been MIA!!! I've still been logging and exercising though. I have a very busy week ahead of me and am unfortunately coming down with something, Hope to fight it off!

Today was my active rest day, I did a 10 min warm up on the elliptical and then did 6week 6pack for the first time. I was pleased with the burn and am hoping to feel it tomorrow.

Hope everyone is doing well and continuing to work on their goals!!!

Barbie - Thanks for the warm thoughts for my son. He certainly needs all the thoughts and prayers he can get.

I am doing OK despite the fact that I have not been under calories. I put the calories back to 1200 and have been under 1300 a day all week.

I made the most wonderful dinner yesterday by improvising. I made calzones using the pre-made dough from the dairy section. For the meat eaters I used sweet Italian sausage and for those of us skipping meat I used drained canned mushrooms and olives. Added a little shredded cheese and tomato sauce straight from the can and baked according to directions. Everyone was happy and it was a quiet meal as everyone was eating. I made a double recipe so as to have some left overs for lunch, but that did not work out as they gobbled it all down. The whole thing took less than an hour which I thought was pretty good for a home cooked meal on a week/work night. Definitely, something to make again.

    Have a great day all,

    Jeannie

Checking in before the rest of my week gets really busy. My oldest son graduates high school on Sunday! I haven't been logging all of my food the past several days. Trying to get exercise in when my foot isn't hurting too bad - having surgery June 1. I took my dog for a walk/jog tonight. I like exercising outdoors the best. I just got the "Flat Belly Diet" book and have started reading that. Has anybody tried it? Hope you all have a great rest of the week!!

Hey all. I've been away for...months. But I'm back. Because I can't fit into last year's Spring clothes! Its always a bit of a yo-yo with me. On the bright side, I never get past a certain point. I have yet to veer back into the overweight BMI range...although I've come close! But, it takes constant effort. If I turn my back for a few short months...bam! the scale starts its ascent.

So, it was either buy a new wardrobe, or get back to it.

    Hi all,

I don't think I am technicaly on a diet any more. I don't eat like I did befor I tried to lose weight but I also don't eat like I did when I started to lose weight. I am tired of feeling like I am not eating. During my work week breakfast is two packets of instand oatmeal, lunch is soup or goulash-ish soup and a fruit (sometimes chips). Dinner is my week point. I have never found any recipie or meal other than a microwave dinner that is only two servings. Most things can't be cooked in anthing less then 6 servings, like rice, split peas, beans; if you cooks things like them with less then 6 servings they burn before they even start to cook. It feels like most vegitables that I like (squash, green beans, carrots, pease, broccoli) are starches so that they have higher calorie counts in the quantities I would like to eat them in. One of my favorite meals used to be, and still is, one yam about the 2x's the size of your average computer mouse, 1/2 of a 1.5 lb bag of carribean blend frozen vegitables, 1 cup chicken stock and about 6 oz of chicken; but the calorie count for this is humongouse, as far as the calorie counters are concerrned it would be a perfectly healthy meal IF I didn't have the chicken or the yam. Trying to control my weight has made my life even more boring then it was when I weight over 260. Somebody needs to write a damn recipe book for singles ( who don't want to make enough for the nexr week or two), and where the ingredients are cheap!!!

Exercise is even worse. I am bored with the gym, it doesn't even feel like an obligation to my body any more (like seeing the doctor), it's like a punishment. Hiking works but it has to be so low impact that all the fun goes out of it, I can't run, and I can't walk outside for the same reason that i can't run or hike very well ( I found out that I have a hereditary disorder when I don't train muscles, I atrain tendons and bones, parts of you body that you can't condition to moving stress). I could bike, until someone stole the bike. How the H*** do you exercise when you can't physically do much?
