Risky Diet in the News

The only reason that this crap works is because a person is limiting their calorie intake to 500 a day! There are so many health risks associated with VLCDs. Unless instructed by a physician, no one should even attempt to cut down that low. I had a friend try this, and I jumped all over her about how unsafe it is.
"The common side effects include headaches, mood swings, depression, blood clots, confusion, and dizziness. Some women also develop a condition called Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS); symptoms of this include pelvic pain, swelling of the hands and legs, stomach pain, weight gain, shortness of breath, diarrhea, vomiting/nausea, and/or urinating less than normal." http://www.dietsinreview.com/diet_column/07/hcg-diet-look-elsewhere-for-weight-loss/
It has also been proven to cause potentially fatal heart arythmias, and the increased risk for blood clots puts a person in danger of having an embolism and stroke. Anyone who is seriously contemplating this diet should first talk to their doctor, and secondly do some serious research from REPUTABLE sources!
If anyone is genuinely interested in how this works without all the bashing, please send me a private message.
STILL don't see any bashing here. Only proven side effects and a plea to be wise and get all your info before starting anything! Sounds like a good friend to me.0 -

Also thought I'd mention that her cancer is mid-stage. The reason they didn't catch it earlier is because one of the SEVERAL side effects of the HCG diet is breast lumps, tenderness and swelling. She thought her "lumps" were normal - and so did her Dr who prescribed the injections to her. After a few months the lumps got worse, so her Dr ordered a scan - found out she has tumors that have been growing and spreading. Now she is looking at Chemo. The sickest thing, she said, "Oh people on chemo loss lots of weight!"
I almost slapped her.
This is what we've come to as a society. People so desperate to lose weight, they are willing to take whatever snake oil gets peddled to them - EVEN when studies have proven that these things are dangerous!
We don't want to put in the work and effort to lose the weight we put on. We want something easy. We want something LAZY.
Which is why we are in the terrible predicament we are in.
there isn't conclusive proof that it causes cancer.
If this were the case, every single pregnant woman would get breast cancer as the body makes WAYYYYYYYYYYYYY more than the small dosage that is prescribed to someone using it for weight loss.
If this were the case, I had a far greater chance of getting breast cancer when I injected HCG trying to get pregnant in the course of fertility treatments than I did using it for weight loss.
The dosage is very small for weight loss compared to what a woman makes when she is pregnant or when using the injections for fertility issues.0 -
The more we eat the more taxes they can collect AND we have to go to the doctor a LOT more for all these problems all linked to obesity, and then the doctors don't really do anything to help you just give you prescriptions that most of the time we don't need if we just changed our diets. The healthcare industry makes a lot of money on people not being informed. If we are all healthy, they can't make any money. Give us medicine that tears up our bodies and they can guarantee their salaries.
That's a sad way to go thru life...thinking the world is out to get you. Bottom line is YOU decide how much and what you eat! YOU decide what you spend your money on. YOU decide to go for that walk/jog/swim today. YOU decide to follow your DOCTOR'S advice on ways to improve your diet so you don't have to be on high blood pressure meds, high cholesterol med, insulin, etc. YOU decide if you want to continue to pay your doctor for advice you don't follow or your pharmacy for meds to aid the problem rather than fix it. IT ALL BOILS BACK DOWN TO YOU!
The real problem is doctors rarely make referrals to nutritionists or dieticians. They don't offer advice for a person to become healthier. Most people don't know what to do.............We see the questions all the time for people reaching out not knowing what to do.
It is easier and more profitable for a doctor to say You have high blood pressure, take this pill for the rest of your life...........than to sit down and say.......Hmmm, let's go over your eating plan to see where you can make those improvements.
Medicine of today is a joke.
It's sad that you live somewhere that the medical system is based on what you can pay, and is profit driven. I hear a lot of that from Americans though. Fortunately for me, it's not like that here in Canada.0 -

pregnant women produce the hormone because they NEED it for their baby/uterus. and you say that , "there isn't conclusive proof that it causes cancer" well, there isnt proof saying it doesnt cause or help move along cancer either. 50/50? no thanks.0 -

Wrong. I am a medical researcher. This is what I do.
"HCG is characteristically produced in significant amounts by certain reproductive system malignancies such as germ cell and testicular cancers, making it an excellent diagnostic and prognostic marker for these cancers. Some scientists have reported that hCG is also overproduced by many other types of tumor as well, albeit in smaller concentrations. In the 1980s and 1990s, Hernan Acevedo, PhD, of Pittsburgh, published a series of articles in which he showed that traces of hCG could be found in all the tumor samples that he tested. We can conclude that a number of different types of cancer - probably more than most people realize - produce this hormone."
If scientists all over the world are finding that cancers of all types are producing levels of HCG - what do you think injecting this into the body does?
Pregnant women are SUPPOSED to have the hormone because they ARE PREGNANT! Women who take HCG shots for infertility are well warned about the dangers ahead of time, and one of the most common and widely reported side effects is weight GAIN. Imagine that. Women who are pregnant gaining weight. Bet they wouldn't gain weight if they were only eating 500 calories a day though... Yes, our bodies do naturally produce HCG, for specific reasons for the body to function. When your body does not need HCG and you inject it anyways, you are putting yourself in significant danger for cancer growth, among other side effects.0 -
I kinda have to laugh that people doing such crazy calorie restriction is attributing their weight loss to HCG rather then the fact they aren't eating. God, what a rip off.
I AGREE!!!0 -

My thoughts exactly......HCG is produced NATURALLY during pregnancy...there's your diff. And I don't know about you but I don't need CONCLUSIVE proof! I mean seriously? I'm gonna wait til I get cancer to say "Yep. You were right." Naw...quite alright. Granted....breathing, eating, and pooping can give you cancer nowadays, but seriously....unless you have some sort of issue going on, your body does not produce hormones that aren't needed. Pick and choose your battles. I'll eat right and hop on the treadmill.0 -
i do what i want. I dont agree with it....you do. its OBVIOUS the only thing thats going to work for a HEALTHY LiFeStyLe is a healthy diet and exercise routine. what is normal about giving yourself a shot everyday to lose weight? do it the right way and I bet your overall health will be much better. thats what the body intended. and to the person that said it isnt appeoved by the FDA...EXACTLY.
I totally agree and really if I have to take a shot to lose weight I'm out. I know I know whatever works for you but come on!! We don't use computers from the 70's and health / nutrition has grown leaps and bounds. So I say any diets from that era toss them out. Are women going to start to wear poodle shirts as well? One thing that has always worked is healthy lifestyle and exercise and you will get there!0 -

I can not speak for those that go to specialty weight loss clinics and pay upwards of $500 or so. I went through my family doctor.0 -

How many people out there take more than 5 different medicines?
Doctors are General Practitioners - They know a bit about everything. That's why there are ALSO specialists out there.
Some doctors can be great. Some doctors are total quacks.
It's our right to get a new doctor, and 2nd or 3rd opinions from another professional.
Trust the FDA, that's a joke - They approved Alli that wonderful weight loss drug - We all know how good Alli is.0 -
Just thought I would share an article on the HCG DIET....
http://health.yahoo.net/experts/dayinhealth/is-the-hcg-diet-a-risky-fad
Stop with this.
First of all, it is not a fad. This is a plan put together by a doctor back in the 1950's and there is logical science behind it.
STOP with bashing what others are doing to help themselves lose weight and be healthier. JUST STOP ALREADY!!!
No matter what plan a person is doing, we should be encouraging and supporting one another. This bashing has got to stop.
Ummm posting a relevant health article is not bashing0 -

And how many months do you plan on being on it? 5? There $500 plus the Dr's visits costs, insurance costs, etc. 10? $1000 plus the monthly costs to visit your Dr, and bill your insurance. Money is money. Whether you are paying 100$ a month for a "natural" pill - or 40$ a month for a gym membership, or 8$ a month to rent workout DVDs.
Food for thought. I'm not attacking you personally - I'm just saying that I won't support anyone who thinks that this is healthy. If you were a friend of mine or a family member, I'd want you to be 100% aware of the dangers. I put this in the same category as Bullemia and Anorexia, Gastric Bypass, Steroid abuse and so on. Its dangerous to toy with at best and deadly at worst.0 -
This girl at work is damn near begging me to try it with her because her family has lost 12lbs (roughly per person) on this.
I dropped 50lbs in 6 months by healthy eating and exercise I think I can do without putting extra hormones in my body.0 -
I'd bet this thread will be locked before the end of the day.0

I'll take my chances with a healthy diet and regular exercise. It's working so far. I did not gain this weight in a couple of months, I will not lose this weight in a couple of months.0

Although I do appreciate the information, I am already on the HCG diet, and I have lost 10.6 lbs in 13 days. So, it must increase weight loss somehow, because I have never lost a pant size in a week before this diet. It may seem unhealthy but this diet is recommended often by our doctors, and I respect my own doctors opinion more than a news article. 500 calories on its own is crazy, and I would never recommend it to anyone. This diet is derived from a natural hormone in our bodies and the low calorie diet does not affect you while on the drops. When you stop the drops, you increase your calorie intake. We should be posting both sides of every story, as I know there are some MFP members who would greatly benefit from this diet (of course, on a doctor's recommendation).
Good information, and good to know the risks, but for those of us already on the diet, we cannot just stop halfway through. I have more energy now than I ever have had before, so the low calories are not affecting me in a negative way. The diet is for 21-23 days. If someone doesn't want to do it, they shouldn't. But I am proud of my weight loss and don't want to be criticized for the way I choose to diet.0 -
Although I do appreciate the information, I am already on the HCG diet, and I have lost 10.6 lbs in 13 days. Actual studies show that HCG is no different than a placebo.

"There was no statistically significant difference in the means of the two groups in number of injections received, weight loss, percent of weight loss, hip and waist circumference, weight loss per injections, or in hunger ratings. HCG does not appear to enhance the effectiveness of a rigidly imposed regimen for weight reduction."

"These studies showed a significant weight reduction during dieting, but no differences between treatment groups in respect of body weight, body proportions and feeling of hunger."

"We conclude that there is no scientific evidence that HCG is effective in the treatment of obesity; it does not bring about weight-loss of fat-redistribution, nor does it reduce hunger or induce a feeling of well-being."0 -
I stopped the HCG weeks ago, kept the weight off, and I'm still losing weight, it's all how and what you eat when you stop the hcg. I spent $40 total for my hcg for the weight that I lost, and I'm sure there are doctor's out there who genuinely want to help people, but I have only met one of them. All my doctors tell me to take prescriptions because they can't figure out which autoimmune disorder I have. I asked my doctor this week to test my antibodies because I want to know what underlying immune disorder I have causing my hashimoto's disease, he said I've been tested before and I don't need to be again.... he want's me to just keep taking synthroid which i've been taking for 18 months now and I haven't gotten any better. he's the 3rd endocrinologist to not care about me, now i have to yet again try to find another doctor who actually listens to me. Most doctors are out there to prescribe you crap that you don't need, because they make lots of money doing it. It's all such a scam.0

There is not FDA approved "cure" for cancer...yet there still is a cure. They don't want you to be cured!0

It's so funny the FDA will say that there's no difference between hcg and a placebo, yet THEY did a study like back in the 70's saying it does work. Anyone would be starving only eating 500 calories, so why when on the hcg do people feel full? It's not just a brain trick cuz i love to eat and I was genuinly not hungry. A lot of people will gain all the weight back cuz they go back to their old way of eating.0
