There are forum rules. If a thread goes further than those rules, it should be locked. Removed is a little more tricky. If you lock it and leave it, that can spawn another thread or to someone new, allowing people to think the discussion is allowed.

Being a mod is a thankless job.

What the hell. If we have to be 18 to join here we should be able to discuss what we want. I didn't get to see what was said after me, and now the whole thread is just GONE? :grumble:

Then what? Edit that person specifically? Also, that is an objective call and someone will cry they are being picked on. I used to me a mod on a forum much more inflammatory than this place and everyone always complained. Try to be nice to one person and the next person b!tches. Locking honestly was the easiest way of dealing with things.

Can there not be a warning of some sort?

I get that when things get out of hand then i agree it needs to be shut down, i have no objection with that and i think all the mods for free time and efforts

but sometimes people go out of there way to make sure a thread is shut down.... is that not a way that you great people could just remove THAT comment?

And all these threads can be Googled and found by anyone. Anyone.
I appreciate the moderators here. :drinker: I had to be "put in my place" here once. I did deserve it. I regretted what I wrote.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with the post. One person took UNREASONABLE offense and set out to get the post removed by throwing out a completely baseless accusation of racism. Delete THAT person's posts and the posts (including mine) responding to it and let the original post live on!

I agree, when a person even makes a comment such as.."this should get this thread locked"

but how would that stop the person from just returning and continuing to post offensive posts? The site must be suitable for everyone, so sometimes it's just easier to delete an entire thread.

just so you know. We (moderators) don't lightly lock or delete topics. We think it over and discuss in moderator forums before doing things. And warnings are almost always issued for rule violations. When it is deemed that a topic is to inflammatory for continuation, it is deleted, if it is locked, many times the moderator will post in there before locking, other times if we feel it's a borderline post we WILL put a note in the topic as a warning message about it's possibility to be locked or delete. This isn't a subject up for debate, we do the best we can as moderators, your choices are either live by the current rules or complain privately to one of us or Mike, but do NOT bring it up in public forums.

Okay guys, here's an explanation as to why the thread was locked.

We received 15+ reports on several of the posts within the thread, specifically ones including religion and offensive insulting posts. I posted a warning prior to the thread being locked. In my honest opinion that thread was going to end up going in only one direction...as individuals were getting more and more upset. If the thread contained informative content, then the thread would have been edited and locked for future users to consult. However, after going through 4 pages and editing them, by the time I had reached the "end" there were another load of posts containing offensive language...it was only going in one direction apart from the posts concerning a hug at the end.

Deleting threads is not something we take lightly.

I didn't lock and delete the thread...the forum members responsible for the derogatory posts did.

Threads questionning the actions of moderators are also not allowed...but it's staying up here so users involved with the post can read the reasons behind the thread lock. Thanks to all members supporting the moderators too. :flowerforyou:

Shouldn't a person who is intentionally trying to cause trouble have their posting privileges postponed?
Ok. That's the last thing I have to say about this. I don't want to get in trouble.

Something that drastic for something so subjective is difficult.

What I think some people fail to understand is that moderators don't just receive a complaint and lock or delete a post, when a complaint is claimed by a moderator, they evaluate the validity of the claim, read the topic and then make a decision on whether actions need to be taken. Sometimes there is discussion with Mike or other moderators, sometimes discussion is not necessary, but in any case, the actions are taken because the moderator feels that they are needed, not because a user complains. Just so everyone knows, dozens and maybe hundreds of claims are dismissed with no action every day, only a small percentage are actually acted upon.

Thanks for some explanation. We as a collective understand the moderators have to deal with a lot, but sometimes its just aggravating to see something pulled and not know the whole story and then be told not to question it openly, I for one am glad it was questioned and I got to read your responses.

I don't think you guys should have to explain yourselves. The forum rules are pretty clear. That thread had numerous rule violations in it. There was a warning given but a small group of people continued to argue. The thread was locked to prevent any further posts, but the a good portion of the remaining posts still contained rule violations. It's a pretty common sense approach and I just don't think you should have to justify the actions.

Honestly, posts like that and all the drama that comes with them will be the number 1 reason why i eventually delete my account here. I don't have time for that kind of stuff and I don't want to be around the negativity.

Does this strike anyone else as crazy? You can't question the actions of a moderator?
