Jodie, good idea with the water challenge! I'm taking it on, too.

    Weigh in = 122.2

    Weekly Challenges
Miles = 15 (3x of 5 mi each in under 60 minutes, adding a time challenge to mine because I'm trying to pick up speed)
    Food = 4 servings fruits/veggies
    Water = 8 8oz glasses of water

Jae, I wasn't a runner until last May. I couldn't even run for 2 minutes straight, much less tackle a mile. I had an ankle reconstruction about 7 years ago and have arthritis in that ankle. The doc said I'd never be able to run or do ay strenuous physical activity involving that ankle. Ha! My longest run so far is 7 miles. It would probably be further if I'd been consistent in training this year but school got in the way. Progress has been slow for me but sooooo rewarding. Just thought I'd give you some encouragement to keep on going. You can do it!

It's so motivating to be around a group of runners! I have slowly started back running. Didn't realize how much I missed the runner's high.

    Jodie, I could never do a tri, as I can't swim! :(

Garrett, do you have any suggestions on a food challenge? I am shooting for atleast 4 servings of fruits and veggies daily and Jodie has a great idea with the water. I try to drink 10 cups a day, but I can push 2 more for a total of 12. Are we counting tea/ crystal light or just pure water?

For the weekend, I would like to get in 5 miles and for the week of July 4- July 10, I would like to do 14 miles (avg. of 2 per day) Are we counting only walk/run/jog miles?

    Start weight: 166.2
July goal wt: 160.0 (would love to break through the 160s, but I'd be happy just even seeing 160 on the nose considering I haven't seen 160 in about 18 years!!)

    July 1: 166.2
July 8: TBA (+/- previous week)
July 15: TBA (+/- previous week)
July 22: TBA (+/- previous week)
July 29: TBA (+/- previous week)

Not going to be a great start for me since I'm spending the weekend in Minneapolis but I just got into town and am already headin to the hotel workout room so hopefully not all is lost!

Leela, I can't swim either. We have a pool and hubby keeps saying I should learn. Maybe some day.

For water .... maybe count anything without caffeine/sugar? Decaf tea/crystal light should be okay.

For miles ... I think like you suggested, Leela, whatever we each determine counts whether it's run/walk/elliptical/bike. Since we're just challenging ourselves and not competing against each other, I don't think it matters how we get through those miles.

Jae, you're already headed to the hotel gym today. That's a great start. I bet you'll stay on track all weekend.

Jodie, have you looked at the C25K program? That's how I got started running. It starts out pretty easy and, by the end (can't remember if it is 8 or 10 weeks), you'll be running for 30 minutes straight. For me, it was a good way to ease into running and keep myself accountable to push a little harder.

    July 1st Challenges:
    water: #/80 (oz)
    fruits and veggies: #/4
    weekend miles: #/5

This is the format I'm using. Use whatever you're comfortable with! I'll come back on later tonight or tomorrow to share my results.

I'm loving how the communication and ideas are flowing! This is going to be an awesome group!

So just to be honest I almost asked to be deleted from this group!! I feel like you all are waaaay far and above my exercise level.... BUT my goal for July was to exercise more so I will hopefully just get motivated by all of you and not discouraged!

    July 1st Challenges:
    water: 90/64(oz)
    fruits and veggies: 5/5
weekend miles: 1.5 miles/possibly 3 - at a 3 day convention so this weekend might be tough on the exercise!

oooh Bunny, it breaks my heart to hear you say that! We originally said that when we set our goals, they are as individuals. All I'm asking you to do is compete against yourself. Its like when we take our daughter bowling and the first game she bowls a 85. The second game she bowls a 104. I told her that she is improving and no matter what our scores are, she beat her first score by 19 pins. So please look at it that way. We are definitely here to ENcourage, not DIScourage!!
  • I worked a 12 hour shift yesterday at work, so needless to say I didn't have time to weigh in! But I just did it this morning, and I'm still at 138lbs, which is fine by me! (:

    July 1st Challenges:
    water: #/80 (oz)
    fruits and veggies: #/4
    weekend miles: 6.5/5
(1.5 miles today. 1 miles jog (13:35), .5 mile on stairmill)

so far I'm at 72 oz of water, fruits: cantaloupe, strawberries, mixed berries, will have veggies for dinner.

Bunny, don't go! Like Leela said, we're just competing against ourselves. I'm putting my goals out there to you all just for some accountability. If I put it out there, I'll do it. If I don't, then I'll talk myself out of it and fall short. To be honest, I don't even pay attention to what everyone else's goals are in comparison to mine. I just think it's awesome when someone meets the goals they've set for themselves. Please be encouraged.

haha me too because I feel too heavy for this group!!
  • Aw, don't leave guys! Being grouped with people who are slightly more advanced than you can actually be a really big helper/motivator - it always was for me when I ran cross country. I'd place myself with a person who appeared to be just a smidge faster than me, and it would keep me working to keep up with them. (:

I'm personally really struggling right now to stay motivated. I got up and did D2W1 of Couch 2 5K, and L1D7 of the 30 Day Shred, but I was about THIS close to calling it quits. I'm just frustrated, because the scale didn't move this week. I know that should be motivation - and that I shouldn't be so focused on the numbers - but its so HARD not to focus on the numbers! I'm going to take my measurements again later this week and hopefully I'll see some changes there and that will help light a fire under my *kitten*! Haha.

I've also been tempted to do something really unhealthy - to "fast" for a day or more. I basically want to test myself, and see how long I can go without eating. I know that's bad and a big no-no, so I'm not going to do it. I've already eating breakfast today. I don't know why I get these "ideas." Maybe its because I'm frustrated and feel like it would be the "easy" way, even though I know it isn't.

is it too late to join. Just joined myfitnesspal today and saw this post. Need all the support and motivation I can get. I'm super positive and can give some great support, too. Mother of 3, super busy life, but need to take control and get rid of the fat :). Since November, lost 37 lbs. Want more. Wanna learn how to eat, which is my biggest downfall!!! So is it too late?

too heavy for the group?!? Don't be silly! We are all at different stages in our weight loss/fitness journey and we all have different goals. That's part of what makes this group unique. I couldn't have hand picked a better group. We can all learn from each other. I think this is far better than having everyone "just alike". Its like the conflict in a relationship that keeps things interesting. Different point of views, experiences. I personally find it fascinating!

Yeah, T! I think everyone will agree that there's room for one more. Keeping the group small gives us the opportunity to get to know each other better without feeling lost in the crowd. I have been in groups before and after checking in for a whole month, I still didn't know everyone's names. I didn't feel a personal connection with them and that's why I decided to start my own group.

Suzzanne, thanks! And I couldn't have said it better about sticking with the group! I have psyched myself out of so many things in the past. I don't want anyone to feel intimidated. Even though our fitness levels may be different, we do share one common goal: to be healthy and happy!!

Garrett, that's a great idea being paired with someone a little faster than you in CC. My friend's daughter is a good swimmer, but my daughter is in a level higher than her. and she likes them to swim together so her daughter can get help from a peer rather than an instructor and she says its been working for her. I think you hit it right on the head.

I don't know about the fasting idea, I heard it works for some people. I have heard of liquid diets too, but it seems like as soon as you start eating again, the weight comes back on. You just have to do it the good old fashion way. Good luck with the shread and C25K programs, stick with it and I'm sure you will see the results you're looking for. It doesn't come overnight. That's the most important lesson that MFP as told me. There are no quick fixes, we just have to be patient!
  • Thanks Leela, that makes a lot of sense. I decided I get too hungry just fasting. Let me tell you - I love food. Haha.

Not such a great day for me ... upset stomach all day. I'm glad it didn't interfere with my ability to play the concert this afternoon. It did get in the way of my food/exercise goals, though. All I've managed to get down is 1/2 a cup of Greek yogurt, some cherry tomatoes, and lots of water. No added miles for today. I hope you all fared better than I.

July - 1st Week Challenges, Sunday the 3rd:
    water: 64/64 (oz)
    fruits and veggies: 1/4
    weekly miles: 2.5/15

T, welcome to the group! I'm glad you found us. Tell us about your goals and how we can support you. :-)

    July 3rd Challenges:
water: 88/80 (oz) -- 72oz of water plus 16 oz of crystal light
fruits and veggies: 4/4 -- pineapple, apple, salad, green beans
    weekend miles: 7.5/5 -- brisk walk 1 mile (15:00)

my foot was starting to hurt a little today, couldn't walk as fast as I would have liked to)

since we started this challenge on a Friday and our weigh ins are on Friday, do you think it would be a good idea to come up with new challenges each week on Friday? Anyone could come up with challenge ideas, I think 3 is a perfect number, not too many, not too few.

No way! Remember that we're all on different points in this journey. I think there are a couple in this group that are closer to their final goals. Also, we are all different heights and body types. I am petite, barely 5'2". While my number of pounds might seem small to you, it is still too much for my petite frame. I started a year or two ago and took off about 20-30 lbs. I'm not completely sure because I was too chicken to get on the scale for a real starting weight (and you are the first I've admitted that, too). I just know that I went from a size 10 or 12 to a size 4. I have been maintaining for a while. I'm in grad school and that, in addition to my performances and gigs, teaching lessons, plus keeping up with 4 teens and housework, tends to tank any weight loss efforts. So I wait until June to work on those goals. This last 10-20 pounds has been haunting me for over a year. I didn't have the "stick-with-it-ness" to do it last summer but I am determined to follow through now ... with your help and encouragement.

Ok thanks guys for being so sweet AND encouraging. I am in this to improve for the month of July and I promise I will!

I will also support all of you in your endeavors :)

I am officially back from my convention, tomorrow really starts the month of July for me. I have gotten in very basic exercise, have gotten my water goal and my fruits/veggies in though all 3 days.
