well you or normal people might say its unhealthy...but in professions of acting, modeling that's all normal for us.....you can see the results in biggest lossers. how they workout so much and eat less cal and lose like 50-80 kg in 5months....they get checked by the doctors.... we do as well and trust me they say theres nothing wrong with it if you do it for s short period of time

Did.... you.... just.... show The Biggest Loser as a model for healthy weight loss? Really? A reality TV show? Seriously?

First of all, those people are morbidly obese, you're talking body fat percentages well into the 50% range and higher. this translates into an energy reserve high enough to supply 4000 to 6000 calories a day without eating 1bite of food.

Second, these people have serious medical issues that are life threatening, and therefore extreme measures are taken (and if you notice, they post this on the show).

Third, the things these people do are monitored by doctors and sports medical professionals at all times, FOR THE SOLE REASON THAT IT IS ABSOLUTELY DANGEROUS. The only reason the doctors allow it is because of the immanent possibility of death from obesity. If someone was say, 40 or 50 lbs overweight, no nutrition specialist with any kind of degree would allow people to do what they do.

Fourth, they DO NOT only eat fruits and veggies on the show, they eat whole grains, and proteins, and healthy oils all the time, as they should.

And last (this is not TBL related), becoming healthy for life has VERY LITTLE to do with BMI, BMI isn't even a valid individual number for most people, long term good health is a combination of healthy body fat %, healthy lean body mass, and receiving all the macro and micronutrients you need to function daily. You cannot, as an adult of normal height, receive the correct macro and micro nutrients you need off 1000 calories a day or less, this is a well known fact. You put your health at risk doing this long term (more than a few weeks at most), you risk your immune system, your hair, skin, nails, your endocrine system, your digestive tract, and your cardio-respiratory system by not giving your body the vitamins and minerals it needs to function properly.

That's it, I'm done with this, it's maddening that someone would offer up this kind of unhealthy advice.

I have to agree! Unless your doctor has informed you that you are in immediate danger from your weight, you should never take that extreme of measures. It’ll only harm you in the long run, and is that why we’re all here? To have healthy lifestyles! Yes we all want to loose weigh, but I feel that I can confidently say most people on MFP want to learn how to accomplish this in a healthy way, otherwise we’d be on some crash diet rather than here on MFP.

The last time I went to the doctors, he weighed me, looked at the scales in astonishment, looked at me, asked if I went to the gym. I said about 2-3 times a day mon to fri with weekends off. He stared at me with his mouth hanging open and said "DO NOT STOP GOING TO THE GYM!!! WHATEVER YOU DO KEEP GOING OR YOU'LL PUT ON WEIGHT!!!"

    True story.

I suspect prior to MFP I've spent a while inb starvation mode - there is no way in hell I could be eating back all the cals. Last year I joined in with my friend who was marathon training and did most of the runnning with her. I came home from a 15 mile run and had beans on toast with a wee bit of cheese for dinner.

No, she said the Biggest Lossers...which is not a show I'm not familiar with. Also, the grammar and spelling? The girl obviously needs more calories as it is affecting her ability to spell. I hate when people make a case for stereotypes, I know smart models! And they'd be so annoyed reading this!

I do want to say this:
I have a very dear friend who is a model. She's gorgeous and thin. And boy, does that girl ever eat. She eats healthy foods, and she run/works out but she's maintaining a healthy caloric intake. Not all models that do what this woman is suggesting, and I know that people who work with my friend would not encourage such a diet. Healthy is what they want, because a healthy model won't pass out on a shoot and a healthy model won't have crashing blood sugar. Not all models prescribe to this method.

I used to be a model also and I always ate normally. I didn't do runway modeling however, those girls are required to be stick thin. I did catalog/print modeling and some tv commercials. I never worked out for hours and hours or starved myself. I haven't had to do that to get back in shape now, either. It simply is not necessary.

No stick thinness for me!!! I'd like to be 11 stone or even 11.5 stone would be great.

I wonder if I lost 3 lbs weight from last week because last week I did mon-thurs in the gym, and took off friday- sunday?

That's a similar goal to me, sent you a friend add :flowerforyou:

You can expect a much larger weight loss in your first few weeks, then it'll settle down to your MFP-planned weekly loss if you stick to the limits it gives you.

I think the problem arises simply because I workout like mad, so that drives up the calorie goal so then I need to eat more food to keep up with it. I'll close the diary and the profile later today and set the settings to 1.5lbs a week and see what happens. I think I will also slow down with the workouts, nobody else I know goes to the gym two or three times a day.

Are you sure of the calories burned? Some of them seem a little high. 2000 calories seems a lot to eat in one day. Also, maybe trade some of the higher sodium foods for vegetables.

I wear a HRM, it should be accurate. Yes, I think I should cut down on the processed foods for sure and pay more attention to salk and sugar levels.

YOU ARE NOT EATING ENOUGH CALORIES.

This is pure and simple the reason so many people get stuck and/or gain weight. Please read this thread for a great explanation:
    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/196502-for-the-people-who-work-out-like-crazy-and-are-not-losing?hl=for+people+who+work+out+like+crazy

The deficits in your daily calories are extreme. Your body is not getting nearly enough to function. It is super important to be as close to 0 at the end of the day as possible. Don't even leave 100 cals in the green. If you go over a bit into the red numbers, it's ok, but when you deprive your body of fuel for so long you will only harm yourself.

Please do NOT listen to people who advise you not to eat exercise calories. Take a look at those people and see if they are athletes or slim fit people who have maintained a healthy weight throughout their lives or at least for several years. I would bet not. Unfortunately, people are so confused about this and if someone is very large and has just begun exercising, they can have a larger deficit in calories and they will lose at first, simply because they have never moved their body before! They will starve themselves for a while, then plateau, then gain, then give up and get bigger. Vicious cycle you can see everywhere you look.

Your weight is not very high, and obviously you are a regular exerciser--you have been starving yourself . . . and you are not losing. Time to up the calories and reap the benefits!

    blessings.

and as sleepy texan said you need to eat more... my lunch today was 1/2 cup fat free cottage cheese (you could have full fat to fill up some calories) 10 fresh cherries i cut in have and pitted myself mixed in then a 1/4 cup of raw almonds on top. it was a little over 200 calories but you could have a sandwich with it and it'd be a awsome lunch. i eat more small snacks than meals.

I disagree. I don't think food has to be plain to be heatlhy. There is absolutely no reason you can't have 15 things combined to make a heatlhy, nutritious meal.

I make very delicious dishes with many components and ingredients. I log every single one of them and I'm losing quite nicely. Sometimes though, my log is two pages long. Who cares as long as the food is wholesome and fits your goals?
  • im not sure if this has been mentioned as havent read all responses but do you have your cals set to maintainence as they are v high, if so you may want to change that to lose either a 1lb or more a week. hope that helps x

like when i really wanna lose weight i take in about 900cal a day and i burn about 1000 cal at the gym each day....and the results are great....
oh, gosh, do I understand that right? the result is -100 calories/day?

yes -100 cal a day...900 cal intake and 1000 cal burned off...i am a model so when we have photo shoot or up coming events we basically train in that manner....because it gives very GOOD results....it only takes 2 hours of gym work to burn 1000 cal for me....like i lose about 3-3.5kg in 2 weeks if i follow the above....yes at times you do feel tired but i sleep for 10hours everyday lol....so i think that helps

    Yeah...that's healthy advice..... =|

I just say be careful with how many excersize cals you are eating back if you are trusting the cals mfp gives you. I was eating all mine back and not loosing ( i just think mfp may overestimate sometimes, which hurts progress) by all means eat some back, but maybe not as many? Just a thought....

have you tried monitoring your salt levels. I started looking at how much salt I was eating and realised if I cut certain things out or ate less of, ie. olives! I managed to shift weight.
My food looks pretty similar to yours so that's all I can suggest really. Stick to 2000mg of salt a day and see if that does anything

To the OP: I calculated your BMR and on here and another calculator and it's between 1565-1587, which would be about 1800-1900 maintenance calories. So you should have a decent deficit. Maybe try mixing up your foods?

I didn't read all four pages of responses but I didn't see anyone mention the lack of water.

Water is a big must, if you don't like water you can log any non carbonated, no sugar and no cafeine drink as water.

Plus as I saw many times, the calorie are high, try dropping about a hundred a week and don't go below 1200.

Try it for a few weeks and let us know if that helps at all.

Keep up with the exercise and maybe do body mesasurements in case you lose inches and not pounds.

Just be careful not to lower the protein or fiber "veggies", you are just about right there and any less and you will have the same problem all over again!

    You can do! Be strong!

Massive thanks to everyone for all their support and ideas. I think I have got some good advice here.

Right, I think I will adjust MFP settings to 2lb loss per week, and start eating back more of the exercise cals.

I will keep a closer eye on the salt and sugar levels - and try to avoid the processed foods. I am ditching those stupid Danone yogurts - I had no clue they were so full of sugar!!! I will also try and vary the foods a bit more.

Exercise-wise I will do more strength training and ease up a bit on the cardio.

    Plan?xx

I think eating back your exercise calories is the right way to go as you mentioned but if I look at the weekends you also go over your goal cals a lot (I think it's because you eat the same and maybe add some drinking but don't exercise and you're just used the the high intake of food that you need throughout the week with your intense trainings). So I think you're right to try to eat your exercise calories but I would also watch it on the weekends that you don't get over your goal so much. Maybe have a tiny cardio portion that allows you to eat more or drink more (I do that on the weekends if I go out) or sth. I'm sorry if that has been mentioned before, I didn't read the whole thread

    Ilovedrinkingtea Posts: 597 Member
Yeah, I need to behave myself at weekends more, but I'm beginning to wonder if I am in starvation mode, certainly some people on this thread seem to think so and I'm not getting enough cals for the amount of exercise I do. I dropped 3lbs last week and I'd never had so many cals on wed- sun. I thought I'd be back up to 13 stone on monday morning - but I'd dropped 3lbs!!! I've never seen so much weight loss so I want to figure out what happened and keep it up!!! xx

I haven't read through all the replies, so forgive me if this has already been said...

Since you only have about 20 pounds left that you'd like to lose, aiming for 1 lb/week will likely be your healthiest bet. As far as eating your exercise calories go, though, are you eating all of them? By that I mean, if you work out for 1 hour and your HRM claims 500 calories burned, are you eating all those 500 or are you leaving room for what you would have burned during that hour anyway (ie. if you would have burned 100 calories just sitting around that hour, are you only eating back 400)? It may not seem like much, but if you did 5 hours of workouts in a week with roughly the same burn, not taking into account what you would have burned anyway in regards to how much you eat back may be what's slowing your losses down more than you'd like. Just a thought! :flowerforyou:

Either way, any loss is a great loss, even if it's slower than you anticipated.
