NSV! Involving knitting! (weird, I know)

I'm a knitter. I knit, and sew, and crochet, and next I want to learn to quilt. I LOVE knitting, especially being able to knit myself pretty things to wear For the past 2 years I've been drooling over a sweater pattern that I wanted to make. But I refused to start it because it has horizontal stripes, and with the extra weight I was carrying I knew it would just make me look bigger.
Last week, I started the sweater Don't the colors just make you want to smile?

Great job on both the weight loss and the sweater so far! My 17 yo DD just made that very pattern in dark blue and silvery/grey stripes and it turned out so pretty! I love the colors you chose too!0

I love the colors!!
I'm trying to get into knitting right now. Its such a nice escape from things, and it keeps me out of trouble. A fantastic start, be sure to show us pictures of the sweater when it is finished!0 -
It's beautiful! Those horizontal stripes will look great .
I'm an obsessive knitter, so I totally know what you mean about waiting to start specific sweater patterns .0 -
Love those colors together! Looks like a smoothie! :DDD Mmm...
You knit extremely well! You could make a profit from that! Good job!0 -
oooh thats lovely, i love knitting raglans and the colours are fab!
is it from a purchased/free/personal pattern?
i've promised myself that when i get to my target size/weight i'll invest in some expensive yarn and knit an item of clothing for me!0 -
Sweet. This is a NSV I never would have thought of. I knit, crochet, and sew, too, but I never get around to making myself anything. I've had my eye on a crocheted hoodie for a while, but at my current size, I'd be at it forever (and it would cost a fortune). Now I'm motivated to get to my goal weight so I can finally make that hoodie for myself. Thanks!

I tried to knit, I failed miserably. I'm a good doll maker though! :flowerforyou:0

That's awesome! I've never knit an article of clothing for myself because I'd want it in nice yarn and it would take a LOT of yarn. When I get to my goal, I want to make myself Annie Modesitt's corset tank top in Artyarns Regal Silk.0

awesome! nothing better than making your own stuff!0

That's looking great already - you are a good knitter. And the colours are gorgeous, well done on your NSV!0

not weird at all!!! you've done amazingly and thaat sweatter is gonna be super cute on you!!!
I'm totally with you on how amazing that knowledge makes you feel! That you CAN start that long awaited project because NOW is the time!! Its better than ANYTHING (even any food!!)
thankyou for posting this! you've re-kindled my love for crafting and I'm gonna take time to finish all the half-done knitting and sewing projects I put down last year when I told myself ''what's the point? They're not gonna fit me anyways!!''
They WILL fit me soon and I wanna have that pride when someone asks where I got it and I say I made it myself!! I LOVE THAT!!
congrats again on your success!! please post a pic when you've finished the sweatter!! will love to see you in the completed garment!!

That is so cute! I am also a knitter, but I have never knitted anything for myself because of my weight. Hopefully soon I will be knitting myself a super cute sweater like that!0
-
And it fits, awesome!0

I love this! I think you just inspired me to pick up the needles after a long knitting hiatus. It looks great and so do your arms in your profile pic.0

Thanks for all the encouragement, guys! And it's so good to see other knitters here on MFP...if any of you are on Ravelry, come find me! My username is harrowinggrace.0

I love it its beautiful
I taught myself to crochet and sew, I would love to learn to knit.0 -
Awesome! I bet that all of that knitting keeps your hands away from snacking! I need to start knitting at night, instead of nibbling on endless carbs.0
-
Yes, lovely colors. I would love a sweater like that in a more tonal design, like tan and cream. But it's a beautiful design, no matter what color you prefer.0
-
That sweater already looks great on you! I have a box of sweaters my mother made me that I cannot wear because I am too fat. Someday, I will be able to put one on.
I crochet, knit, sew and spin, but I often let years go by without doing any of them. You are helping to inspire me. Once the weather cools down, I think I will get back into one of them. Plus, I notice that it's very hard to snack while knitting, spinning, crocheting or sewing.0 -
Plus, I notice that it's very hard to snack while knitting, spinning, crocheting or sewing.
I was watching a knitting show (which I can't remember the name of). They were talking about how knitting keeps your hands busy so you're not snacking. The lady that played Rosario on Will and Grace was on it and she said that she trained her grandkids to walk by and stick food in her mouth. It made me lol.0 -
That looks totally awesome on you! I love the colors and the style is very flattering. And its not weird at all! I totally get it.
One of my motivations for finally deciding to lose the weight was I wanted to make a bunch of sweaters to wear to work (I own a yarn shop so it would make sense for me to wear handknits to work, right?) But the time and expensive of the yarn to make a size 3X has always stopped me from making more than one. I had an epiphany that I could get a sweater done a lot faster and with a lot less yarn in a size medium than a 3X. Ah ha! I have other reasons to lose weight and get healthy as well, but that was surely one of them!
Come find me on Ravelry too...I have the same name there as here.0 -

Annie Modesitt made your wedding dress? Like knit it herself? <swoon>0 -
So diggin it.. I am a knitter too. . . I want one!!!. .. . What pattern are you using?0
-
Looks great! I can sympathize - I'd been avoiding using lovely hand-dyed yarns because of fear of the horizontal stripe effect. Can't wait to get back to knitting myself things in my new smaller size!0
-
I wear stripes proudly. I don't care if I'm large and in charge. However, I completely understand what you mean about making an article of clothing for yourself.
I have been hesitant to make my own clothes, because it is so labor intensive and time consuming. If I am going to make something, I better fit in it for the rest of my life.
The last couple of years, I have changed sizes several times. Hopefully now that I am working out more and eating better, I will lose some of the weight and maintain it.
Now that you mention it, I'm going to go and pick up my hook. I did start something this weekend that is coming along well. It's not entirely crocheted though. I'm just adding trim to a long sleeved t-shirt. However, with t-shirt material, I find that the sizing has been rather forgiving on me, and I have a little less invested in the trim than I would if I crocheted a whole garment.0 -
another knitter here so i totally get it. you look great! and the colors are fab! post a pic when it's complete so we can all drool over your mad knitting skillz and how amazing you look.0
