I've heard spinning is the best.

Have to say I'm sceptical of some of the very high burns reported though - 1000 calories for a Zumba or a Jam class - nah, highly unlikely in my opinion.

For me (I'm a small, reasonably fit female) my burn rates are approximately:
Running - 600 calories an hour
Body Attack - 450 calories an hour
Calisthenics - 400 calories an hour
Body Step - 400 calories an hour
Body Combat - 380 calories an hour
Body Jam - 300 calories an hour
Zumba - 280 calories an hour
Body Pump - 280 calories an hour
Body Balance - 250 calories an hour

I did zumba wearing my HRM and it was kicking my hiney, not a good dancer, and I only burned 450 calories in 55 mins at 247 lbs. So I agree.

For me personally it's 4-5 hours on the mountain bike that really burns some serious calories, especially if I can get in around 5,000 feet of climbing per session.

My spinning class is what I burn most calories doing 500 - 600 calories (depending on how much I work) and these are actual HRM calories burned, not a machine that would tell me I've burned 1400 cals

Freeform sports are the best since they work all muscle groups and you can usually perform longer than doing just straight cardio. I play 2-3 hours of tennis and I burn something like 2500 cals. Also boxing is spectacular. I do a class which is 30 minutes of circuit weights and cardio followed by 30 minutes in the ring and you can hit 1000 cals easy.
