Off for my first 100 mile ride!

I posted this on our MFP Cycle Gang thread but wanted to share with all, too.
I'm supposed to do my first Century ride tomorrow--that's 100 miles in one day. BUT, here's tomorrow's weather forecast:
"Cloudy with showers likely with a chance of thunderstorms. Windy with highs in the upper 60s. Southeast winds 25 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph. Chance of rain 70 percent"
angry
Now, here's today's weather: "Partly sunny, with a high near 63. East wind between 7 and 13 mph."
Sooo, needless to say, I'm doing my 100 mile ride today!
I've got my DH standing by all day in case I need help. I had a big breakfast, lots of snacks loaded on the bike, and I'm off!
I plan on following the same route that the "official tour" sponsors have laid out--they've already got the roads all marked for the routes; so I can have my DH drop me off where the "Start" line is and just start riding!
Then, I'll go down tomorrow morning and pick up my T-Shirt from them and then come home.
I should be done by 4:00 or 5:00 this evening.
That way, I can get back on my healthy eating track, too. The last week and half, I've upped my calories and haven't even been tracking anything. I had began to feel so weak with the amount of riding I was doing and trying to keep a calorie deficit, so I followed songbyrdsweet's suggestion to increase my caloric intake until after my Century. She suggested I do maintenance until after my 100 mile ride.
Well, let's just say I've eaten more than maintenance :blushing: :ohwell:
I've gained 3 pounds in a week and half--some of which I know is glycogen and "woman issues" related and will that will drop away soon (I hope!).
So, 100 miles or so today and then back on my healthy eating lifestyle with less cycling and more gym work-outs since cooler weather is here, too.
I have come to the conclusion that the amount of cycling I was doing this late summer and fall is not conducive to weight loss. It just takes too much energy to cycle 300--500 miles a month that I couldn't keep a deficit and feel healthy or have energy to get through the day.
Throw in the almost impossible task of keeping my glucose levels up to avoid the severe lows I have been having for the past 3 months and it is just too much of a chore right now to put in hours every day on the bike, lose weight, and maintain my diabetic control.
So, until I reach my goal, I'm going to cut back on the cycling to a more "casual" type riding (meaning 40-50 miles a week and less in during cold weather!) and spend some time doing other forms of light cardio exercise.
I told my DH I'm even thinking of taking swim lessons at the gym--maybe! It'd be cool to do a Triathlon all on my own next year! tongue
I've been burning up like 4,000 to 10,000 or more calories a week cycling and plan to cut back to around 300-800 calories burned per day exercising.
The good thing is that after several days of eating pretty much what I've wanted to, my body should be jolted by a return to a 1300-1400 a day diet and I'm hoping I'll see a return to steady weight loss--at least for a couple weeks anyway!
I'll check in this evening after my Century and give a ride report.

pssssst...you'll probably burn off those 3 lbs in one day:smokin: :laugh:0 -
100 miles!? Are you serious? GO YOU!!! :drinker:
I'm very impressed. I can go 4 miles on my bike! :happy:0 -
Good luck on your ride. I know you can do it.. Too bad about the weather. Of course it is raining here so no morning walk for us. I may take the kids to the mall today so we can do our walking inside. Of course I am also thinking about the "Y" then I don't have to listen to I need that and I need this. Enjoy your ride.0

You just amaze and more importantly INSPIRE me....I have gained 30 pounds in a year (after losing 60!!!) and I feel AWFUL!!!!) I have my 60 mile walk coming up in 5 weeks and while I know I will be fine, I just dont 'feel' at a good weight.....I am up about 25 since last years walk and I can tell....so THANK YOU FOR YOUR POST THIS MORNING!!! I needed it!!! I wonder if you know how many people you touch....
Have fun riding.....
Blessings!

Good luck - though, you've probably already left
I just finished a 40 last weekend in about 3.5 hours with the stops (on a mountain bike, not a road bike). The advantages of the scheduled ride are: pit stops, water, and free food. I didn't partake in the food (I brought my own), but I would have never made it without the port-a-johns and the water. If the weather is good next year, I plan on doing the 63 mile (100K) - I don't think I would finish a 100 mile on a the cruiser I hope to get next year by the 5 pm deadline.
I wouldn't have gotten out of bed with that forecast though - it's a hard enough ride without fighting against the wind - and the rain would make it miserable. There will be other century rides though!0 -
Alright Shore! Go get 'em girl!!0

I'll be thinking of you today!! Good Luck!!:flowerforyou:0

Thanks again to everyone for your wonderful comments!
I went to bed at 6:45! The Amazing-growing-bigger-every-day-puppy Geraldine woke me up at 3:3am wanting to go out, and now I can't go back to sleep.
Amazingly, my legs aren't too sore this morning! I didn't think I'd be able to move but they're not too bad at all. I will definitely NOT be exercising today though! :noway:0 -
