Do you ever give unsolicited advice on someone's diary?

I'm not talking about if they ask you for input....I'm talking about, you see "so and so completed their diary for 7/30/11 and was under their calorie goal...." and you click on their view diary and notice that they were over on sugar and tell them to work on sugar? Does anyone do that? I find it seriously annoying.

Then why is your diary public?

If you find it's annoying and do not wish anyone comment on your diary, either close it, or do not hit the "completed" button. Just my 2 cents

Why is it that if my diary is public I want people to comment on my constant (and planned, btw) being over on protein every day?

Nope. It is none of my business unless they ask for help on something that viewing the dairy might help with :)

All I'm saying is that when you make information (any information) public, then you open yourself up to criticism. You really can't complain; you're doing it to yourself.

I guess maybe if I wasn't losing any weight week after week, I might be open to help. But I find it seriously annoying when someone writes "oh wow, lots of salmon and chicken today!" or " peanuts for a morning and evening snack? how interesting..."

    wtheck you trying to say?!

If you plan to be over on protein, why don't you just change the protein goal to be higher?

Never...I don't want people doing that to me either. I know where my weaknesses are and I am trying to overcome them, no need to tell me that.

As to questioning why her diary is public...what does that have to do with anything? Having a public diary does not mean "hey come tell me how I messed up my diet." Then of course we get people who complain about people that have private diaries...gee, I wonder why.

Thats the only reason why I have mine public. I welcome any negative or positive commenting. I also changed my macros to 40/30/30 because the carbs are way too high for me and the protein is too low.

I don't know how to do it, and I don't really care that much to do it....It doesn't bother me that it's red and says -20 or whatever. Why should it bother other people?

It doesn't bother me in the least, just wondering if you knew about it. I changed mine to 40/30/30 because I thought the goals were off as well.

I don't really look at anyone's diary. One, because my diet is low carb. And two, if I want to learn to eat better, I'll research it myself on a site that knows a bit more what they're talking about.

Why does it bother you that it bothers others? If you're good with it, don't worry about it. People ready way too much into things.

lots of people don't have a life except the computer. I would never comment on someone's unless they specifically said "take a look at my diary and ...." asking for advice. However, I just today went ahead and made my public and will see if anyone does give me any input but if it gets annoying, I'll close it. LOL.. But, as stated many times here, making anything public opens you up for criticism, critique, commentary, rants, raves, etc. It's the world on the Internet. People from all over the world can tell us what we are doing wrong. :noway: But, if we don't like it, we can live our life less publicly.

It bothers me when I get comments saying I should try eating more complex carbs or less peanut butter or chicken or something.

The only things I comment on, unsolicited are:

If they're not drinking enough water, if it's something they track.
    OR
    They're not eating enough calories.

I gave unsolicited advice once on a friend's post about missing a certain pasta dish. I wondered why she couldn't try finding a healthier version and using whole wheat or other alternatives to white pasta (low carb, low cal, "smart taste", etc). Also mentioned how in my experience deprivation was the root of failure. She never responded and I decided that was just a huge waste of breath. Now I try to keep my mouth shut unless someone specificially asks for input.

I have once but only because that person was OBVIOUSLY trying to lose weight the unhealthy way. I just commented that it would really be a good idea to eat more. After the 2nd day of 600 calories, I just took her off my new feed so I do not see her anymore. problem solved!

The only thing I'll ever mention, unsolicited, are things like the fact that I'm jealous of the 10 ounce steak he had for dinner while staying within his calorie goals. Or perhaps getting a recipe for a meal that had a tasty-sounding description. I can't even imagine offering advice on drinking more water or eating out less, unless I was specifically asked.

Anyone who did that with my diary (and mine is only open to those on my friends list) would probably find themselves un-friended after the second "offense."

Nope, don't stick my oar in. I say well done if the have done well and I can be bothered, keep my mouth shut if its bad.

I agree. These are things that I comment on. I don't care what someone is eating, none of my business but if I see that they only had breakfast (a slice of toast) and dinner (a cookie) then I will politely say something. I don't expect to hear back from them but I hope that something I say will help them. I opened my diary up because I wanted people to look and comment, I don't get offended. They might have a better idea then me. If you don't like the comments, don't click the completed for the day button or make your diary private. The ratio change idea is good too, either way- I hope you find a solution that works best for you because this is your journey. Good luck!

If you are loosing weight, don't worry about what other people say! Your diet is obviously working well for you and you could be eating much worse in any case! I can see why it would be annoying so try not stress about it! x x

I can see your point on how unsolicted advice could get annoying. No one's ever commented on my diary choices. The only reason I look is to see if they have ideas for me to try. Sometimes I get sick of the same stuff over and over.

I don't see it as my business. There are so many people losing weight in different ways. They could be calorie cycling, doing low carb, etc. Someone could be counting just calories one day and the next decide to do low carb. So unless I'm asked I don't say anything other than good job if I have time. If I think they've done bad I just don't comment.

I will comment on different types of foods (like my mfp friends from across the pond) because I am unfamiliar with the item. I will also comment ONCE if I see a friend eating way too few calories and it has been a theme for them. They asked to be my friend and for support and I can't support somebody doing something I think is really bad for them. If it bothers them or upsets them that I make those comments, they can unfriend me. I don't go searching through other people's diaries though and I certainly don't throw stones about what they eat because I don't always make the best choices.
