meant shoes...(looks like I went overboard with characters)

Do you guys do your home aerobics and dance workouts barefoot or in shoes? I started Zumba recently. I find it easier to dance in rythm barefoot...shoes make it a little awkward for me to dance...I tend to do movements a little stiff. I am using light weight shoes (which are rigged at the soles...though not tyre like). What are the pros and cons...any thoughts?

Yeah, I find it difficult with shoes, too. Barefoot, maybe socks. I've never tried socks but wonder if they are slippery.

A year ago I would've said you should really wear shoes. But now with those new Vibram shoes that are like gloves for your feet being worn by marathoners, I think there could be arguments made for both.

i always do mine at home bare footed. If you do wear shoes for zumba, you need ones with minimal tread. I have even heard about putting a footie nylon over your shoe, to make it swivel better.
  • I do mine barefoot, but I guess it's really just a matter of personal preference. I do mine barefoot b/c it's more comfortable that way. I exercise on carpet (at home) and with sneakers, it's just too difficult to get my feet goin' the way I want to get 'em goin'.

At the gym, I have no problem with sneakers.

I say, do what's the most comfortable for you. Whatever will ensure you continue doing the workouts...do that!

socks are slippery!!!! Do not do!!! Esp on hardwood... frankly, even on yoga mats :|

Clearly, I do not wear shoes, lol... I'm barefoot when I workout at home, pretty much the only time I wear shoes indoors is for my treadmill, though I definitely prefer running outside :)

Because we have carpet, I like it better on bare feet. With shoes, I don't get smooth moves.

    I hear you!

Most of my in-home workouts are EA Sports Active or the Step Aerobics and I always have my sneakers on...But any dancing or yoga....barefoot for sure. I have carpet in my room where I exercise and it's bit frustrating when I can't move fluidly lol

Depends how much jumping around the exercises call for. With plantar fascitiis and occasional bad knees, if there is bouncing I wear good runners. If there isn't, bare feet are good.

    I do that too *blush*
honestly it's motivating seeing muscles when you're working out! (I have lots of mirrors in my room, where I usually do my indoor exercises)

I go barefoot on a thick carpet. I tries a few times with shoes but they get in the way.

The only at home stuff I do is Tae Bo (and it isn't very often.. I realize that I do better working out at the gym). I ALWAYS wear my shoes because there's no way my back and hip could take it without wearing shoes. I need the support shoes offer. :)

I have to wear shoes or the carpet hurts my feet. (Cheap rough rug!) and if I just wear socks my feet slip. (I do the 30DS)

I do it barefoot. but I might invest in some like soft soled shoes with a tiny bit of traction if I had hard floors.

I've been doing Zumba for several months in socks, but I had a hard time with the quick squats (slipping a little too much). So I got these super cute dance shoes. They don't have a lot of tread, just enough to grab when it's necessary. I LOVE them!

in socks is the best for me, shoes trip me up on the carpet but we have rough carpet so socks let me side around a bit.

Zumba requires cross training shoes that make side movements easier... but I can see why barefoot would make it even better!

I used to do Zumba barefoot on the rug but I saw those shoe sliders they sell. Thought about buying them until I realized the were spandex. I found a pair of kids spandex pants at a yard sale, cut 2 pieces of the leg and had 25 cent shoe covers instead of $15 from zumba and now I slip and slide as needed :)

If I was naked I would just get depressed :(
  • I do a lot of Zumba :) I wear shoes because a lot of Zumba can be high impact. I find that my joints prefer the shoes when it comes to stomping and jumping.

Thank you so much. . I am so getting a pair of these. . I have been dancing in socks as well, but when I do JD2 I started to get pain in my ankle from being on a hard surface. . . We have wood floors with throw rugs on them.

First of all a BIG thank you to all those who replied!! was not expecting so many replies :)

I am glad that it is just not only me. I am able to do step-by step videos barefoot so far on hard floor without any trouble. Only little (very little..like you get from walking around a mall for few hours) soreness is there in the soles of my feet. But I am able to move, pick up their steps and keep in sync better barefoot. So from your replies it seems it is indeed ok to do so. great!

Those who have expressed concern about hurting your feet while doing barefoot...I hear you too...that's the main reason I asked you guys because I wanted to know if going barefoot was a total no no. Thank you for your input too.
Since the floor on which I workout is polished smooth I don't think socks will be a good option for me.

I do have cross trainers but they are little more weighty than the sneaker shoes I have been using since past two days (both are Reebok ).
@prsop98...thank you so much for the link :)
Do shoes for dance need to have cushioning at heels? Maybe that is why sneakers are not working for me. They have a continuous sole i.e the toe and the heal part of cushioning is not separate but one almost flat piece (which is grooved or rigged).

I would always prefer to be barefoot, but it's been too cold here (winter in my part of the world) lately.
The thought of wearing nothing doesn't really work for me - wayyyyyyyy too much jiggling, I need support!

I totally get you...same with me, need a good support. I don't even exercise in front of a mirror...too scared too lol. Will one day when I have lost considerably and that will be an NSV for me :)

    dance in barefoot
but i do my aeribics in shoes as i find they help take some of the impact out - or else my knees tend to ache or hurt more if i do hign impact aerbics (jumping) in bare feet
    if that makes sense
