    Yes they are cucumbers.

I did not know that Menudo was made with cow stomach.

I did not know that Menudo was a food.

Hmmmm speaking of cucumbers to pickle...

Reminds me of a Family Guy episode
  • I get made fun of every year about Yams. I lived in an area where no one ate sweet potatoes or Yams... and someone once told me that they got sick off of canned yams - that you can get food poisoning from them. My first Central IL thanksgiving with my hubs family - they had Sweet Potatoes. I was terrified to eat them - they didn't look "cooked enough" to me.. ha ha - I told my husband later that I didn't know if they were sweet potatoes or yams and I didn't want to risk eating yams. I went 30 years of my life believing people died or got incredibly ill from yams... but sweet potatoes were safe. :o) I catch hell for this at EVERY holiday with the hubs family!

Leave it to Von to start an absolutely hilarious thread!!

My one daughter hates raw tomatoes with a passion, but will eat them in any way shape or form cooked (especially ketchup!)

Menudo, the boy band (Puerto Rican), was yummy when I was young...now I can't enjoy them as much...that's just weird. Menudo, the food, is untouchable to me...the idea skeeves me out.

Not all pickles are made from gherkins...most are made from cucumbers unless they say otherwise.

I am funny with fruit. I like fresh fruit; I like other stuff...I DON'T like my fresh fruit in stuff. My grandma used to always make Jell-o, and I would get really mad when she would put mixed fruit in it...nasty texture! I totally think that adding sugar to any fruit is a sin, and adding salt is an abomination!

I never really knew what head cheese was growing up, but every time I saw it in the deli counter, I always had the thought that something had to have been dead wrong with that cow.

I can only imagine what Rocky Mountain oysters probably are, but lucky for me, I don't like oysters, so they would never be just popped in my mouth to be spit out or swallowed.

I think that is all for now.

Gherkins are made from gherkins, other pickles are made from... ready... wait for it... PICKLING CUCUMBERS! Really tricky name, bet you never would've guessed, huh?

I always thought Rocky Mountain Oysters were real oysters. Boy was I surprised.

OMG! I never heard of them and looked it up - that's one thing I won't be eating!!

I liked calamari and scungilli until I found out what they were, now I can't bring myself to eat them anymore.

I never tried them but haggis, sweet breads and blood pudding - not going near them!!

When I was younger I wouldn't eat the ends of hotdogs because I thought they looked like belly buttons. I would have to have them cut off. I still can't think about it much when I eat a hot dog..lol.

    Hilarious! that's my favorite part!

And FYI, those rocky mountain oysters were known as "calf fries" where I came from, and yes, I ate them, and yes I liked them. I was probably in my early teens at the time, but I think I'd try them again. After all, I've eaten fish on purpose a couple of times, and nothing can be as nasty as that stuff.

Not that I recall. My grandfather broke me of eating things I wasn't certain of exactly what they were. I was eight or nine, I think. He was eating something and offered me a taste. As it turned out it was raw squid.

I must admit though, that this is probably the funniest thread I've seen so far.

I still do not know what capers are. But I DO know they are really really gross.

Capers are a type of berry that's generally brined or pickled. They come, unsurprisingly, from the caper bush.
    Delicious in Salmon Patties!

Might be more info than you wanted to know... :noway:

    What are They?
Turn away from the creek and look toward the pasture: mountain oysters are peeled and cooked testicles, usually from bulls, although lamb, pig and goat testicles are also eaten.

    Other Names
Mountain oysters are also known as Rocky Mountain oysters, calf fries, swinging beef, prairie oysters, calf fries and cowboy caviar.

    Where to Buy
Mountain oysters can be bought online at specialty meat shops or at local farms (see Resources).

    How to Prepare
Mountain oysters are usually soaked in salt water, drained, sliced 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick, rolled in flour and spices and deep fried. They are eaten warm, often with hot sauce.

    Celebrating Mountain Oysters
From Texas to North Dakota, mountain oysters have festivals dedicated to them. Testicle connoisseurs and those who just love to eat them gather to celebrate this unusual dish and party hard with other fans of the mountain oyster.

Now here's what Wiki has to share:

"Usually this meat product is sold frozen, as it is inconvenient to get testicles fresh anyplace other than on the range.[5] The primary goal of testicle removal is not necessarily culinary.

Castration in veterinary practice and animal husbandry is common and serves a variety of purposes, including the control of breeding, the growth of skeletal muscle suitable for beef, and temperament alteration."

I won't eat tomatoes but i like ketchup and I hate spaghetti but love lasagna.

Funny - I won't touch ketchup, but I love tomatoes! Well, good tomatoes from a garden - not usually from the store.

I think all the stuff added to ketchup makes it only a far distant cousin of tomatoes. A sweet, vinegary cousin, but it's JUST not the same as a real, vine ripe tomato still warm from the sun.

  • Two pages with women talking about putting pickles, cucumbers and testicles in their mouths....never a dull moment here on MFP.
  • I love coconut flavoring, but I cannot stand actual coconut. It's a texture thing.

One time my friend handed me a piece of candy (chocolate) and I popped that thing into my mouth like it was nobody's business. After I devoured it, she informed me that it was a chocolate covered cricket.

I have eaten a plain cricket before. Can say that I would have preferred it chocolate covered.

Surely a 'pickle' is anything that's been preserved in vinegar. So in McDonalds it may be a gherkin, (Cucumberish veggie), apart from that though it could be an Onion, some Cabbage, Eggs, Walnuts, Herring, Garlic.

Ain't no such thing as a pickle, it's like calling something a 'Salted'.

    Hmmmmm.. Pickled Eggs

I don't have that kind of story..but I never knew that there was such a thing as canned potatos, onions or asparagus until I was about 20 years old. I was so SHOCKED.

And it was only last year that one of my friends told me they bought frozen asparagus. I was like "they freeze asparagus???"

I've always just eaten those things fresh. Who knew!

Hubby ate at a friend house when he was a kid. LOVED the chicken, turns out it was squirrel. So apparently squirrel is in that list of foods that taste like chicken.
