why did i read this thread while eating lunch? so many gross things listed here. lol.

I am one of the weird ones though because I'm not a fan of cucumbers but I love pickes.
I also hate spinach but I love spinach dip (especially with artichoke).
I don't eat sour cream unless it's a dip (i.e. ranch, french onion, etc added to it).

    Yes they are cucumbers.

I did not know that Menudo was made with cow stomach.

I used to eat Menudo as a kid then my dad explained to me what it was...never touched it again...just couldn't get my mind past it. I also apparently used to eat cows tounge as a kid (and was told it was steak)...also...can't eat it now.

And hot dogs...I went like 10 years without eating a hot dog after my dad started working in a butcher shop and told me what parts of animals they throw into the "mix" to make a hot dog.

I like tomatoes, but I'm not so keen on ketchup. Although I've always known what ketchup was made from.

I had a friend that did not know that there were clams in clam chowder. He thought they were carrots.
  • I never eat raw whole tomatoes but love salsa and sun dried tomatoes . I am not crazy about cucumbers but love pickles. I used to think chicken fried steak was chicken when I was younger.

My oldest daughter (age 8) was absolutely horrified to learn that the lobsters in the tank at Red Lobster were intended for dinner. "What do you mean, they're not pets?!?!?!"

I won't eat sushi. Heard too many stories of food poisoning. To me, "sushi" is Japanese word for "bait." That being said, I do like seafood. Just needs to be cooked first!

My mom used to tell me that tapioca pudding had fish eggs in it. To this day I still cannot eat it.
OMG I used to think it looked like that so I wouldn't eat it.

    Other Names
Mountain oysters are also known as Rocky Mountain oysters, calf fries, swinging beef, prairie oysters, calf fries and cowboy caviar.

I make this stuff called cowboy caviar but it's nothing like bull testicles. It's all different kinds of beans, corn, onions, salsa and italian dressing. Eat it with chips, it's delicious

That's a funny story. And for the sushi, not all of it is raw. :] I am a major fan of it. Some places will steam it a bit, but it's not fully cooked. Then again, I'm sure there are other people like that too, so they are able to cook it.

I know that hominy is made from corn but I won't eat that stuff (hominy) because not only does it taste nasty it smells even nastier! I do like corn though.

I love love love all tomatoes and tomato based products aside from one. Ketchup. This has got to be the most vile substance mistakenly called a condiment known to man.

Now, there's a bit of a back story to this aversion of mine.

It all started approximately 27 years ago. It was an average school
day and nothing seemed out of the ordinary as I made my way home from
the bus stop. My sister and I approached the house and didn't notice
anything amiss as we entered the front door. It was at that moment as
I was entering the living room, I noticed the room was darkened and
most of the furniture was turned over. Upon closer inspection I also
made out the forms of my mom and step-dad sprawled on the ground with
limbs akimbo and what appeared to be blood splattered all over the
place. Within a few seconds I was overpowered by the reek of a
mixture of tomato and vinegar. I had a sudden epiphany and dashed as
fast as I could to the bathroom to retch up my lunch but not before
scolding the two on the ground nearing fits of giggles. I haven't
touched catsup/ketchup since that day and the smell of it still makes
me heave and/or gag. My parental units, in their infinite wisdom,
thought it would be a good experiment to fake their murders to see
what my sister and I would do if such an event ever took place. It
was a good thing for them that I didn't head over to the neighbor's
place and make a little call to the police to report the grisly murder
    of my parents.

So there it is, my little anecdote as to why I can't stomach ketchup.
  • i thought chick peas where little baby chickens when i was younger so wouldnt eat them but i now love humous. Dunno how my brain worked that one out . (wasnt the brightest child lol)

I also never heard of head cheese nor rocky mountain oysters and just googled them, i would love to know why people would eat that, eewwwyyy!!!

LOL My dad calls it FISH EYE pudding. He doesn't like it.

I like tomatoes but ONLY if they're firm. I hate having squishy middles and the seed parts
    just gross me out.
I don't like peas, UNLESS they're split peas (dried) or are in canned soups. My guess is I don't like
the texture and re-hydrating them makes them more palatable to me.
I do like calamari but ONLY if it's deep friend rings... don't put a whole squid on my plate lol
Also I won't eat rabbit or squirrel bcuz to me, they look too much like what I THINK
a dead, skinned cat would look like--and I love kitties too much. Plus rabbits & squirrels are kinda cute.
Unfortunately I have tried beef tongue (when I was growing up). Since then I've told my parents
that I don't want to eat anything that could potentially taste me back ROFL
I've never had these AND I will NEVER try: head cheese, hominy, haggis, chitlins/chitterlings, tripe.

Love Rocky Mountain Oysters, I'd try head cheese, used to hate prune anything but now really enjoy prunes and prune juice(homemade juice), black pudding was palatable, would love to try haggis, chitterlings are nummy as is calamari( especially the tentacles), love escargot and raw oysters on the half shell, enjoyed frog legs, could eat sushi all day long, yak, goat, wild boar and llama are scrumptious. But you'd never catch me eating durian. Blech!

I always thought Rocky Mountain Oysters were real oysters. Boy was I surprised.

My husband was in the middle east with some friends and they ate at some exotic restaurant.
He was enjoying his meal until one of the guys asked the waiter what it was exactly that was in the dish because it was so soft and succulent.
the response of "sheep heart and testicles" almost made him puke on the spot.

To this day, 15 years later, he still gags when anyone repeats the story!

If I find out tapioca pudding really has fish eggs in it and sweet bread is cow pancreas, I will never eat them again. Is it possible that Portuguese sweet bread really is just "sweeter" bread, like from sugar or something??!! (fingers crossed)

I recently found out that Cottage Pudding is not pudding, after I followed the directions to make it.

And my most embarassing realization came at the age of 20 when I found out that potatoes grew underground. :blushing:
