The only place I can find the Naturally More PB is Super Wal*mart. It's in a yellow jar usually on the top shelf.

My Joseph's bread doesn't?? It's the flat Lavash whole wheat, oatbran, & flax kind. HTH!

    Jess

NM's not at our Super Walmart, or at Meijer! I also tried our organic store, they didn't stock it either. They could probably special order it, but I can only imagine how much that would cost me.

I found the Joseph's pitas at Walmart - and I found "sucralose" on the ingredients list. That's the generic term for Splenda.

Oh man! Yeah, I'm sure it would be expensive to special order or ship!

I never noticed that they have sucralose in them!! Now I'll have to check! I do use splenda in smaller quantities, but I do avoid aspartame, it's a migraine trigger for me!

I agree!! I used to like McD's salads but even the chicken is soooo salty and tastes processed to me now!! I do like their black coffee though. I do like their parfaits and they aren't too terrible.

I think it's the "Super-Size Me" effect. McD's felt like they had to improve their image when that movie was on everyone's mind, but now they are going back to their old ways. :ohwell:

I was sooo hungry today! I blame it on eating at McD's yesterday. I didn't earn any exercise calories today either because it was a rest day for me. I set my calories back to 1200 this week, too, so that definitely isn't enough when I'm feeling the after-effects of eating processed foods! After falling off the wagon last weekend and putting a few puffy sugar-pounds back on, I chickened out about raising my base level. So if I went over my 1200 by 500 today, I'm not that concerned. I probably need more anyway!

I feel like I'm always playing these calorie games with myself because I'm not sure how much I should be eating. :grumble: If I go over, I justify it with "I probably needed it." If I go under (rarely), I think, "well, at least I won't gain!" I guess over time I will learn what's going to work and what isn't.

I agree! When I eat too much processed stuff, it just makes me crave junk for a couple days!! :grumble: I think you definitely need to be eating more than 1,200 cals, I never can go that low!! Unless I skip a meal, and I never do that!

My local natural foods store will order items at no extra cost. They are a little more expensive than the grocery store, which will look into special requests, too. Hey, I think I'm going to have to give that a try, for both NM peanut butter and my Crowley low-salt cottage cheese. (I'm having a hard time stomaching the salty stuff after discovering it!) It's time to start being a little proactive in getting the food I want!

(If I didn't already mention it, amazon carries NM PB, but you have to buy a case of 12 for $50. :noway: )

You can check it out at http://www.peanutsnack.com also I don't know if they ship or just give you a list of local retailers.

I can't imagine if my SWM stopped carrying it!! I buy at least 4 jars every time I go there (I don't shop there all of the time). And every time the checkout person will look at the jar and say... must be good (or something like that! ).

How's everyone doing today? My day is going well. I just got back from the Y, where I ran around their indoor track for 15 minutes -- my chiropractor and sports doctor doesn't want to see me until I have two short runs under my belt (yay!)-- and then I did ellipticals for 45 minutes. I had to dodge basketballs and basketball players in the gym :grumble: but I'm happy that I got my run in while there is so much snow outside!

I'm off to a work Christmas party tonight. There's at least one other person at work who doesn't eat much sugar, so at least everyone will be used to someone saying "no thanks." Still, I'll probably bring some food and keep it in the car just in case there isn't anything that I want to eat.

How did the party go, Cheryl??

We were traveling this weekend so my days were kinda crazy!!

But... last night we went to a yummy little cafe and I had the smoked salmon salad. Yummy romaine, tomatoes, red peppers, cucumbers, topped w/ smoked salmon and a cranberry vinaigrette. YUMMY!!!

Today we went out to breakfast w/ my Dad at Perkins. I ordered the everything omelet (w/ eggbeaters) and fruit cup. I gave my Dad the pancakes (he wanted them) so I didn't eat them. (they were the white buttermilk kind)

Then we took lunch to my Great Aunt, we got Subway. I had a 6" chicken breast on whole wheat w/ lots of veggies.

So... two meals out but I made good choices.

Tomorrow I'm going to start a Clean Eating post to cover the rest of the year, and then I am going to start them monthly. Healthy eating is my passion, and I wish more people were concerned about it, so I want to keep putting it out there, and also keep myself focussed on it!

I'm convinced that obesity would not even exist in our society today if there were no such things as refined sugars and processed foods. There would be no type 2 diabetes, no hypoglycemia, less depression and fewer mood disorders, fewer suicides, less insomnia, less high blood pressure and high cholesterol, less fatigue, fewer headaches, fewer digestive ailments, and no food addictions or obsessions. Instead, all of these ailments, and more, are on the increase.

It's time for all of us to start reversing the trend. Simply put: Good food = good health. Together, lets be living examples.

I didn't end up going after all. The kids didn't want to go, and I didn't want to leave them home alone at night, so I got out of it!

My husband was telling me about the food -- a lasagna made with pastries and spinach, rather than noodles. Sounds VERY yummy, and he brought some home, but my first thought was: The sauce probably has sugar in it, and perhaps the pastries, too. Am I becoming TOO skeptical, perhaps even paranoid? I have to be because it only takes a tiny amount of sugar to bring back the dreaded cravings and mood swings :explode: . I'm sure they'll ask me at work tomorrow whether I tried it, and I'll have to explain why not, and they'll be totally unsympathetic. My boss has even said, "Just eat the f***in' cookie!" :noway: Not to me, directly, but to her husband, who's not a big sugar eater, either.

    Way to go, Jess!

I'm even paranoid about Subway. The whole wheat bread is really highly processed, it probably has added sugar, and the meats probably have added sugar. Grrrr! I'm not trying to burst your bubble. Just showing the extremity of my food worries! :noway: I'm scared to eat anything I didn't buy and prepare myself!
  • Hello lovely people! sorry i've been busy dealing with my crazy inlaws!!!! they just left but are super annoying!!
i've been eatinng good lately...i think my downfall is chocolate and chips! Normally i pack my lunch and the kids before i leave the house! We used to eat out a lot when we had 1 kid but now we mostly pack lunches to save money and in the long run to avoid all those extra calories!!!
We went to the movies after almost 6 months and ofcourse i had nachos and buncha crunch...i love nachos:love:
But we might go again later this week, taking advantage of my cousin visisting us, when else do i get a free babysitter... But what would be healthy and compact to take to the movies with me? also is popcorn, the light microwaveable one good or bad, health wise...i love it as a snack...
i also posted a while back if u guys had any ideas for 300 calories meals...my limit is 1200 and am always going over...Please help!!!!

100% agreed! Can i add autism, asthma and allergies...I'm not a doctor but my family is...and they do agree that even these chilhood diseases are linked to processed foods...they always get annoyed when ppl freak out about not vaccinating the kids, but not look into what they r feeding them!

    Hi, jawaria!

I have lots of ideas for 300 calorie meals. The key is controlling your portions and making sure you're eating protein, fiber, and fats in every meal so they are satisfying, even at "only" 300 calories. Maybe we'll have to post our meals again for a few days.

    Breakfast:
    1/2 c dry oatmeal, cooked
    1 sliced apple
    1/4 c skim milk
    1/4 c egg whites
    1 Tbs flax seed
    Calories: 302

    Snack:
    1/4 c lowfat yogurt
    1/4 c lowfat cottage cheese
    14 almonds
    1 sliced banana
    Calories: 260

    Lunch:
    1 piece 12 grain bread
    1 Tbs hommus
    Spinach leaves
    2 oz. turkey slices
    1/4 c cottage cheese
    6 oz coffee
    1 Tbs half and half
    1/2 Tbs maple syrup
    Calories: 283

Also, I wouldn't worry so much about going over your calories a little bit. 1200 calories is very low for anyone. That's what I have mine set at, too, but I'm concentrating more on packing as much nutrition into those calories as possible. If I go over a little bit in a given day, and I know I haven't eaten any sugar or processed foods, I am still happy with my progress.

So true! That being said, I am struggling with what my own kids eat. I don't believe in controlling and restricting people's diets, other than my own, even children's. If you withhold something from someone, it only makes them want it even more, so that when they do get it, they go on a binge because it's forbidden. My kids are sugar fiends. I've restricted them a lot over the years, but am now trying to stop. I don't buy everything they ask for, but I do try to say "yes" a lot, and then concentrate on being an example of eating healthy. We have made holiday cookies this year, and it was one of the times that I fell off the wagon, but I haven't had any of the leftovers. They know I don't eat sugar most of the time, and they know why, but they need to come to their own conclusions about whether or not it's good for them. It may take some time, and it's hard for me to watch. I just make sure we have lots of healthy foods in the house, which they do also eat, along with the junk. :grumble:

What is NB Peanut Butter. It is a pleasure reading how to eat well. I will give it a try. It has been a month since I been going to the gm and also working out at home with Hip Hop Abs, Turbo Jamm, and the Abs Machine. I go 6 times a week and lso got a trainer, but right now I stop with the trainer because it is alot of money. I keep track of what I eat and what I burn for the day with the BodyBugg program. It keeps me motivated and I love it. Thanks to you all for you help. I am glad I click on this board. Have a WONDERFUL HOLIDAY!!!

Yeah, Subway is a rarety around here too. But... it was a family thing and I didn't want to get a salad from their either. I don't even eat much whole wheat bread and it did taste a bit salty too!! Oh well, I've been eating cleaner for a few years now, and know when I'm ok to eat something and when I should just say no (ie, sugar or white flour is a no no for me!).

The darker the chocolate the healthier it is for you. I buy the Dove Dark chocolate promises or a 70% or more cocoa bar and just eat a small square. It satisfies that chocolate craving w/out you wanting to eat a whole bar of it!! Cocoa powder is great too, you can make your own hot cocoa and it only has 20 cals per tablespoon of cocoa powder!!

NM Peanut Butter is a brand of PB called Naturally More that Jess buys. I think it has added omega-3 and flax? Some of us can't get it where we live. :frown: But she gets it at Walmart (comes in a yellow jar, located on the top shelf).

    LOL! She beat me!

If you're looking for another good natural PB and you have a Meijer store near you, they make a really good natural and organic PB there. My girls love it, they make it in crunchy and creamy!!

You definitely don't have to give up your chocolate! Just eat it as dark as you can and at the highest quality. I seem to be able to eat a little bit of that without feeling like I need to eat the whole bar! (Unless I'm PMSing, that is!  ) Lately, I'm avoiding all sugar and candy (because I know there will be a time of the month that I'm weaker and I'm saving it for then), but if I were to eat some, that's what I'd choose.

And I drink hot cocoa sweetened with stevia nearly every day, which also doesn't cause cravings for me. You just have to try different things and see what works for you, with the goal of being as "clean" as you can. Perfection not necessary!

One of the best ways to tell what constitutes a healthy food is to look at the ingredients. The fewer the better. If it comes in a box and has a list of ingredients a mile long, full of chemicals and unknown substances, then it's no longer a nature-made food. In fact, it probably doesn't look anything like a food from nature any more. Buy most of your foods on the perimeters of the grocery store -- produce, dairy, and meats. The idea is to buy mostly foods with one ingredient, and then combine them yourself. That way you know what's in your foods, and that they haven't been depleted of their nutrients.

But like anything else, it's not cut and dry. It's a guideline for finding healthier foods.
